Dubai Desert Safari Timings: The Short Answer

Exact pickup times, durations and drop-off for every desert safari in Dubai, plus a month-by-month sunset table so you reach the dunes at the perfect moment.

  • What is the evening desert safari price?: The evening safari starts from AED 35 per person for self-drive, with shared and private pickup options, and a private 4×4 for up to seven guests at AED 799.
  • How long does a desert safari take?: It depends on the type: a morning safari is about three to four hours, an evening or VIP safari is about six hours, and an overnight safari is roughly 16 to 18 hours from afternoon pickup to the next morning.
  • What are the Dubai desert safari timings?: Morning safaris run 6:00 to 8:00 AM for about three to four hours. Evening safaris are picked up between 2:30 and 4:00 PM depending on the season, last about six hours, and drop back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM.
  • What time is pickup, and is it included?: Pickup falls within the windows above, timed to the season and your location, and hotel pickup and drop are included on our safaris.
  • What is the best time or month for a desert safari?: The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable for any timing. In summer, a morning safari or a later evening pickup is best to avoid the afternoon heat.

What are the Dubai desert safari timings?

Dubai desert safari timings depend on the tour you choose. Morning safaris start between 6:00 and 8:00 AM and last about three to four hours. Evening safaris are picked up between 2:30 and 4:00 PM depending on the season, last about six hours, and drop you back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM. Overnight safaris pick up around 3:00 to 3:30 PM and return the next morning after breakfast, roughly 16 to 18 hours in total. A VIP safari runs on the same timing as the evening safari with premium seating.

The key thing to understand is that the evening pickup time shifts with the season, earlier in winter and later in summer, so that you always reach the dunes in time for sunset, the highlight of the evening. In the cooler months pickup is around 2:30 to 3:00 PM; in the peak of summer it is closer to 3:30 to 4:00 PM. The full month-by-month sunset and pickup table is further down this page. All of our safaris run from our own camp on the golden dunes of Al Awir, the closest desert to Dubai.

In short, choose a morning safari for a cool, early, shorter trip, an evening safari for sunset, shows and dinner, and an overnight safari to stay under the stars until sunrise. The rest of this guide breaks each one down in detail, with a month-by-month sunset table, seasonal differences, a stage-by-stage schedule, Ramadan and weekend notes, and honest guidance on which timing suits you.

Why Desert Safari Timings Matter

Desert safari timing matters, camel ride on the golden dunes near Dubai
Desert safari timing matters, camel ride on the golden dunes near Dubai

Picking the right time is the difference between a good safari and a great one. The desert changes character through the day. Early mornings are cool, quiet and soft-lit, perfect for families and photographers. Late afternoons build to a glorious sunset, then a warm evening of food and entertainment. Nights are dark, peaceful and full of stars. Each safari is timed to capture the best of its window, which is why the schedule is not the same all year.

Getting the timing right also avoids the two most common mistakes visitors make: booking an afternoon trip in the peak of summer and finding the early part hot, or leaving an overnight too late in the season to enjoy the cool night air. This guide gives you the exact times for every tour and season so you can plan around the heat, the sunset and your own schedule. If you are weighing the options, our pages on the morning safari, evening safari and overnight safari go deeper on each.

Morning Desert Safari Timings

Morning desert safari timings, golden dunes in soft early light near Dubai
Morning desert safari timings, golden dunes in soft early light near Dubai

A morning desert safari starts between 6:00 and 8:00 AM and lasts about three to four hours, so you are back in the city by late morning with the rest of your day free. The exact start shifts with the season. In the cooler months from October to April, a 7:00 to 8:00 AM start is comfortable. In the hot months from May to September, we begin earlier, around 6:00 AM, to catch the freshest air and the soft sunrise light before the heat builds.

DurationAbout 3 to 4 hours including travel
Drop-offLate morning, usually by 10:30 – 11:00 AM
Best forFamilies, photographers, summer, a free afternoon

The morning is the coolest, quietest safari, with the dunes almost to yourself and beautiful low light. It does not include the evening live shows or the BBQ dinner, those are part of the evening safari, so the morning is the calmer, more activity-focused option.

Evening Desert Safari Timings

Evening desert safari timings, sunset over the dunes near Dubai
Evening desert safari timings, sunset over the dunes near Dubai

The evening safari is the most popular, and its pickup time is set so you reach the dunes for sunset. Pickup is between 2:30 and 4:00 PM depending on the season, the safari lasts about six hours, and you are dropped back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM. In winter, with the earlier sunset, pickup is around 2:30 to 3:00 PM; in summer, with the later sunset, it moves to roughly 3:30 to 4:00 PM.

DurationAbout 6 hours including travel
Drop-off9:00 – 9:30 PM
IncludesDune bashing, sunset, camel ride, sandboarding, eight live shows, BBQ dinner

A VIP evening safari runs on exactly the same timing, with the difference being premium front-row seating at the camp rather than a different schedule. The evening is the full experience: the golden-hour sunset, the camel ride and sandboarding, then eight live shows including belly dance, LED Tanoura and a fire show, and a halal BBQ buffet dinner before your drop back.

Overnight Desert Safari Timings

Overnight desert safari timings, camp glowing under the night sky near Dubai

The overnight safari picks you up around 3:00 to 3:30 PM and returns you the next morning after breakfast, roughly 16 to 18 hours in total. The first half mirrors the evening safari, dune bashing, sunset, shows and dinner, and then the camp quietens for a bonfire, stargazing and a night sleeping in a traditional tent, before sunrise and breakfast in the morning.

DetailOvernight safari

Drop-offNext morning, after breakfast

Because an overnight runs into the next day, it is the one safari where the return time is the following morning rather than the same night. The exact morning drop is flexible and confirmed when you book. For the full experience, see our overnight desert safari guide.

Month-by-Month Sunset and Evening Pickup Times

This is the table no other timings page gives you, and it is the secret to a perfect evening safari. Sunset in Dubai shifts through the year, so the evening pickup time moves with it to make sure you are on the dunes when the light is at its best. Approximate sunset times and the matching evening pickup window, month by month:

MonthApprox. sunsetEvening pickup
January5:55 PM2:30 – 3:00 PM
February6:10 PM2:45 – 3:15 PM
March6:25 PM3:00 – 3:30 PM
April6:35 PM3:00 – 3:30 PM
May6:50 PM3:15 – 3:45 PM
June7:05 PM3:30 – 4:00 PM
July7:10 PM3:30 – 4:00 PM
August6:55 PM3:30 – 4:00 PM
September6:25 PM3:15 – 3:45 PM
October5:55 PM2:45 – 3:15 PM
November5:40 PM2:30 – 3:00 PM
December5:35 PM2:30 – 3:00 PM

These are approximate guides, sunset varies by a few minutes year to year, but the pattern is reliable: the latest sunsets are in June and July, just after 7:00 PM, and the earliest are in December, around 5:35 PM. Pickup is timed roughly three hours before sunset so there is time for the drive, dune bashing and reaching a good dune to watch the sun go down.

How Timings Change by Season: Winter, Summer and Shoulder

Seasonal desert safari timings on the golden dunes near Dubai
Seasonal desert safari timings on the golden dunes near Dubai

Dubai has three broad seasons for desert safaris, and the timings flex with each.

SeasonMonthsEvening pickupNotes
Winter (peak)Nov – Feb2:30 – 3:00 PMCool, comfortable, earliest sunset, busiest season
ShoulderMar – Apr, Oct3:00 – 3:30 PMWarm but pleasant, good light, fewer crowds
SummerMay – Sep3:30 – 4:00 PMHot afternoons, latest sunset, cooler after dark

In winter, the cooler air means the whole evening is comfortable from pickup, and the earlier sunset brings an earlier pickup. This is peak season, so weekends book up and it is worth reserving ahead. In summer, the afternoon is intense, so the evening pickup is later and the desert cools nicely after sunset, with the dinner and shows in the pleasant part of the night. If you want to avoid the summer afternoon heat entirely, a morning safari with its early start is the most comfortable choice.

Morning timings shift too: an earlier 6:00 AM start in summer to beat the heat, and a more relaxed 7:00 to 8:00 AM start in winter. Overnight pickups stay around 3:00 to 3:30 PM year round, with the night itself coldest in winter, when the dark-sky stargazing is also at its best.

Evening Safari: Stage-by-Stage Schedule

Evening desert safari schedule, live show at the camp near Dubai
Evening desert safari schedule, live show at the camp near Dubai

Here is how the six hours of an evening safari actually break down, stage by stage, so you know roughly when each part happens.

StageApprox. duration
Hotel pickup and drive to the camp50 – 65 minutes
Dune bashing across the golden dunes20 – 30 minutes
Sunset photography stop15 – 20 minutes
Camel ride and sandboarding20 – 30 minutes
Henna, Arabic costumes, shisha, settle inOngoing at camp
Live shows: belly dance, LED Tanoura, fire showAbout 1.5 hours
BBQ buffet dinnerFrom around 8:00 PM
Drive back to your hotel50 – 65 minutes

Add-on activities such as a quad bike or a falcon photo fit into the camp time. A morning safari follows a shorter version of the first half, dune bashing, sunset or sunrise light, camel ride and sandboarding, without the evening shows and dinner. An overnight continues past dinner into the bonfire, stargazing and a night at camp.

Timings Today, on Weekends and Public Holidays

Desert safari timings every day including weekends near Dubai
Desert safari timings every day including weekends near Dubai

A common question is whether the timings change day to day. The simple answer is no. Our desert safaris run every day of the week, including Fridays, the Saturday to Sunday weekend, and public holidays, and the pickup windows are the same on those days as any other. The only thing that changes the time is the season, not the day of the week. Because weekends and holidays are busier, especially in winter, we recommend booking a little ahead so we can confirm your preferred pickup.

If you want a safari today, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you the exact pickup time for your date and area and confirm availability. Same-day bookings are often possible, but in peak season the popular evening slots can fill, so earlier is safer.

Desert Safari Timings During Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, timings and the programme adjust out of respect for the fast. The evening safari is timed around iftar, the breaking of the fast at sunset, so the schedule centres on the evening meal. In line with local custom during Ramadan, the live entertainment such as music and dancing is generally paused, while the dune bashing, camel ride, sandboarding and the dinner continue, often as a special iftar or suhoor experience.

If you are planning a desert safari during Ramadan, message us and we will share the exact timings and what the programme looks like for your date, as these shift slightly each year with the Islamic calendar. It can be a uniquely peaceful and special time to visit the desert.

Which Timing Should You Choose?

Choosing the best desert safari timing on the dunes near Dubai
Choosing the best desert safari timing on the dunes near Dubai

The best timing depends on what you want from the desert.

Choose a morning safari if

You are visiting in the hot summer months, travelling with young children, chasing soft photography light, or you want your afternoon and evening free. It is the coolest and quietest option.

Choose an evening safari if

You want the full experience, the sunset, the eight live shows and a BBQ buffet dinner. It is the most popular for a reason and works well most of the year.

Choose an overnight safari if

You want the bonfire, the dark-sky stars and a sunrise in the dunes, and you are happy with simple, authentic camping. Best in the cooler months.

As a rule of thumb, the cooler winter months suit any timing, while in peak summer a morning or a later evening start is the most comfortable. For a full comparison, see our morning versus evening guidance.

Timing Tips: Who Should Choose Carefully

Honest guidance the other timing pages skip, because the right time matters more for some guests.

Families with young children. The evening safari finishes around 9:00 to 9:30 PM, which is a late night for little ones. If a late finish is hard, the morning safari, done by late morning, is the gentler choice. We can also keep the dune bashing soft at any time.

Anyone sensitive to heat. In summer, avoid the early part of an afternoon trip if heat is a concern, and choose a morning safari or the later summer evening pickup so the active part falls in cooler air.

Anyone with motion sickness. Dune bashing is the same at any timing, but a lighter meal beforehand and a gentle pace, which we are happy to provide, help a lot. A morning trip on a settled stomach often suits sensitive guests better than a late evening.

Expectant mothers and anyone with back or neck concerns. Timing aside, dune bashing may not be suitable, but you are welcome at the camp for the calmer activities and the dinner. Tell us when you book and we will plan around it.

Where the Safari Starts and Drive Times

Desert safari camp at Al Awir and drive times from Dubai
Desert safari camp at Al Awir and drive times from Dubai

All of our safaris run from our own camp on the golden dunes of Al Awir, on the eastern edge of Dubai just off the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44), at approximately 24.638, 55.490. It is the closest desert to the city, which keeps the transfer short and the timing reliable. We include hotel pickup, so the transfer is handled for you.

Plan on 50 to 65 minutes from your hotel to the camp, depending on which part of Dubai you are picked up from and the traffic that evening. Pickup is included in every safari, so this is for planning your day rather than for driving yourself.

Because the camp is so close to the city, pickups are efficient and you spend more time in the desert and less on the road. We confirm your exact pickup time based on your area when you book, and we collect from hotels and addresses across Dubai. For full directions, see our location guidance, and remember there is no need to self-drive or find the camp yourself.

What to Wear for Your Timing

What to wear for your desert safari timing, sandboarding near Dubai
What to wear for your desert safari timing, sandboarding near Dubai

What you wear depends a little on your timing, because the desert temperature changes through the day and night.

Morning safari: mornings start cool, so a light layer you can remove as it warms is ideal, with closed shoes for the sand and sunglasses for the rising sun.

Evening safari: it starts warm and cools quickly after sunset, so wear light clothing but bring a light jacket or shawl for the evening, plus closed shoes and sunglasses for the golden hour.

Overnight safari: the night gets genuinely cold, especially in winter, so pack a warm layer, long trousers and a hoodie or jacket. Blankets are provided, but warm clothing makes the night far more comfortable.

For every timing, bring a charged phone or camera, sunscreen, and cash or card to pay. Arabic costumes for photos are provided free at the camp.

Bad Weather, Late Pickups and Specific Times

Can I request a specific pickup time? Within the seasonal window, yes, where possible. Tell us your preferred time when you book and we will do our best to arrange it around the route and the sunset. The closer to sunset the evening pickup, the tighter the schedule, so flexibility helps.

What if I am running late for pickup? Let us know as soon as you can on WhatsApp. A short delay is usually manageable, but the evening is timed around sunset, so a long delay can mean missing the best light. Being ready a few minutes early is the safest way to get the full experience.

What happens in a sandstorm or bad weather? Genuinely disruptive weather is rare in the Dubai desert, but if conditions are unsafe we will adjust the timing or reschedule your safari. Safety always comes first, and because there is no deposit, moving your booking is simple and costs you nothing.

Many timing pages online are generic guides written to rank, not by the people running the safaris. We are the operator. We set these pickup times every day around the sunset and the season, from our own camp at Al Awir, so the timings on this page are the real ones we work to, not copied from somewhere else.

Dubai Desert Safari Timings: FAQ

What are the Dubai desert safari timings?
Morning safaris run 6:00 to 8:00 AM for about three to four hours. Evening safaris are picked up between 2:30 and 4:00 PM depending on the season, last about six hours, and drop back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM. Overnight safaris pick up around 3:00 to 3:30 PM and return the next morning after breakfast, roughly 16 to 18 hours.
What are the morning desert safari timings?
A morning safari starts between 6:00 and 8:00 AM, earlier in summer to beat the heat, and lasts about three to four hours, dropping you back by late morning, usually around 10:30 to 11:00 AM. It is the coolest and quietest safari of the day.
What are the evening desert safari timings?
Evening pickup is between 2:30 and 4:00 PM depending on the season, around 2:30 to 3:00 PM in winter and 3:30 to 4:00 PM in summer, timed so you reach the dunes for sunset. The safari lasts about six hours, with a drop back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM.
What are the overnight desert safari timings?
An overnight safari picks up around 3:00 to 3:30 PM and returns the next morning after breakfast, about 16 to 18 hours in total. The first half is the evening safari, then the camp quietens for a bonfire, stargazing and a night in a tent, before sunrise and breakfast.
What are the VIP desert safari timings?
A VIP safari runs on exactly the same timing as the evening safari, with pickup between 2:30 and 4:00 PM by season and a drop back around 9:00 to 9:30 PM. The difference is premium front-row seating at the camp, not a different schedule.
How long does a desert safari take?
It depends on the type: a morning safari is about three to four hours, an evening or VIP safari is about six hours, and an overnight safari is roughly 16 to 18 hours from afternoon pickup to the next morning.
What time is pickup, and is it included?
Pickup falls within the windows above, timed to the season and your location, and hotel pickup and drop are included on our safaris. We confirm your exact pickup time when you book, and we collect from hotels and addresses across Dubai.
What is the best time or month for a desert safari?
The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable for any timing. In summer, a morning safari or a later evening pickup is best to avoid the afternoon heat. For stargazing on an overnight, winter nights around the new moon are darkest and clearest.
Morning or evening safari, which should I choose?
Choose morning for a cool, quiet, shorter trip with a free afternoon, ideal in summer and with young children. Choose evening for the full experience with sunset, eight live shows and a BBQ dinner. The morning does not include the shows or dinner.
Do timings change in summer versus winter?
Yes. The evening pickup is earlier in winter, around 2:30 to 3:00 PM with the earlier sunset, and later in summer, around 3:30 to 4:00 PM. Morning safaris start earlier in summer, around 6:00 AM, to catch the cooler air. Overnight pickups stay around 3:00 to 3:30 PM year round.
What are the timings today, on weekends and public holidays?
Our safaris run every day, including Fridays, the Saturday to Sunday weekend and public holidays, and the pickup times are the same on those days. Only the season changes the time, not the day. Weekends and holidays are busier, so booking ahead is recommended.
Do timings change during Ramadan?
Yes. The evening safari is timed around iftar at sunset, and in line with local custom the live entertainment is generally paused, while the dune bashing, camel ride, sandboarding and dinner continue, often as a special iftar or suhoor experience. Message us for the exact Ramadan timings for your date.
What time is sunset, and can sunset viewing be guaranteed?
Dubai sunset ranges from about 5:35 PM in December to about 7:10 PM in July, and we time the evening pickup roughly three hours before so you are on the dunes for it. The sunset itself depends on the weather, but our timing is set to give you the best chance of the golden hour.
What is the evening desert safari price?
The evening safari starts from AED 35 per person for self-drive, with shared and private pickup options, and a private 4×4 for up to seven guests at AED 799. Full pricing and what is included are on our Dubai desert safari price page. There is no deposit and you pay on arrival.
What if I am late for pickup, or want a specific time?
Within the seasonal window you can request a preferred pickup time and we will do our best to arrange it. If you are running late, message us straight away, a short delay is usually fine, but the evening is timed around sunset, so being ready a little early ensures you get the full experience.
What happens in a sandstorm or bad weather?
Disruptive weather is rare in the Dubai desert, but if conditions are unsafe we will adjust the timing or reschedule your safari, with safety always first. Because there is no deposit, moving your booking is simple and costs nothing.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
