Can-Am Buggy & Quad Biking Abu Dhabi: The Short Answer

Dune bashing, camel ride, falconry, BBQ dinner under the stars & live Bedouin shows. Hotel pickup included.

  • How much does it cost?: Can-Am buggy experiences start from AED 800. Quad biking starts from AED 200, as a standalone ride or an add-on to a safari.
  • How long does a session last?: Most self-drive sessions run about 1 to 2 hours, covering roughly 10–15 km of desert terrain.
  • What time does the desert safari start and finish?: Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.
  • Where does the desert safari take place?: At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive.
  • What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?: Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.
  • How do I book?: Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day.

Can-Am Buggy & Quad Biking Abu Dhabi — Quick Answer

This is the self-drive side of the desert: you take the controls of a powerful Can-Am dune buggy or a quad bike (ATV) and ride the Al Khatim dunes yourself, with full safety gear, a briefing and expert guides leading the way. No licence is needed for tourist rides, sessions run about 1–2 hours, and there are options for all ages — from kids’ mini-quads to high-powered Can-Am buggies. Can-Am buggy experiences start from AED 800; quad biking is available as an add-on or standalone ride.

Can-Am Buggy vs Quad Bike: What’s the Difference?

Both put you in the driver’s seat on the dunes — but they deliver very different thrills.

A Can-Am buggy is a powerful, side-by-side off-road vehicle with a roll cage, bucket seats and seatbelts. You sit in it like a car, grip the wheel, and unleash serious horsepower across the sand — it is the closest thing to desert motorsport, and it can carry a passenger alongside you. A quad bike (ATV) is a four-wheeled bike you sit astride and steer with handlebars, giving a more hands-on, exposed and agile ride. Quads are lighter, more playful, and come in sizes from kids’ mini-quads up to powerful adult machines.

Both are self-drive: you are the one driving, not a passenger. Our guides give a full briefing, fit your safety gear, and lead the ride in a convoy so you always have expert support. Whether you want the raw power of a Can-Am or the nimble fun of a quad, it is a completely different experience from being driven in a 4×4 dune-bashing session — here, the adrenaline is in your own hands.

Adrenaline in your own hands

No passenger seat here — you take the wheel. After a full briefing and safety gear fitting, you drive the dunes yourself with expert guides leading a convoy the whole way.

The Self-Drive Experience: Safety First

Self-driving the dunes is a genuine thrill — and completely accessible for beginners when it is run properly.

Every ride begins the same way: a full safety briefing, a fitting of your gear, and a practice loop so you are comfortable with the controls before you hit the big dunes. You do not need a driving licence for a tourist ride, and you do not need experience — the guides teach you everything and stay with you throughout.

What’s included for safety

  • Helmet and goggles — provided and fitted for every rider.
  • Full safety briefing — controls, braking, cornering and dune technique.
  • Convoy with instructors — a guide leads and others support, so you are never alone.
  • Roll cage & seatbelts — on every Can-Am buggy.
  • Speed-limited machines for kids — mini-quads built for young riders.
First-timer friendly: Nervous about driving? Tell your guide — they’ll start you slow on gentle terrain and build up only as fast as you’re comfortable. Complete beginners ride every day.

Age Requirements & Who Can Ride

Different machines suit different ages and confidence levels. Here is a clear guide — exact limits are confirmed when you book.

RiderOptionNotes
Kids (approx. 6–10)Mini-quads (50–90cc)Speed-limited, closely supervised
Teens (approx. 13–15)Smaller quadsWith supervision, lower-power machines
Adults (16/18+)Full quads & Can-Am buggiesHigher-power machines; age depends on vehicle
PassengersCan-Am buggy (side seat)Usually from age 5, belted in beside the driver

Buggies can carry a passenger, so non-drivers can still join the fun. If you are travelling as a family or mixed group, tell us the ages and we will set up the right mix of machines.

What to Expect on Your Ride

1. Arrival and gear-up

You meet your guides at the dunes, get fitted with a helmet and goggles, and receive your safety briefing.

2. Controls and a practice loop

The guide walks you through throttle, brakes and steering, then you take a short practice loop on gentle ground until you feel confident.

3. Hit the dunes in convoy

With a guide leading, you ride out across the Al Khatim dunes — climbing, carving and cruising the sand at your own pace, with support riders keeping the group safe.

4. Photo stops and open sand

Your guide pauses at scenic spots for photos and, on the open sand, gives you room to really open up the throttle safely.

5. Cool-down and refreshments

After 1–2 hours of riding you return to base for water and a rest — grinning, dusty and buzzing.

Best Time to Ride

Self-drive rides run year-round, but they are most comfortable from October to March. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal — cooler temperatures, softer light and the most enjoyable riding conditions.

Where & Pickup

Rides take place in the Al Khatim desert, about 45 minutes from central Abu Dhabi. We collect guests from hotels and homes, and from mall meeting points — Al Wahda Mall, Mazyad Mall, Safeer Mall and Shabiya (Musaffah). Dubai and Al Ain pickups can be arranged on request.

Tips for the Best Ride

  • Wear closed shoes and light layers — trainers or boots, plus clothes you don’t mind getting dusty.
  • Bring a buff or scarf — it keeps blown sand off your face on open stretches.
  • Sunglasses under goggles — and sunscreen for exposed skin.
  • Secure your phone — use a zipped pocket; a chest or helmet mount is great for video.
  • Listen to the briefing — a few minutes of instruction makes the whole ride safer and more fun.
  • Start smooth — ease into the throttle; the power is there when you want it.

Why Does a “Dune Buggy Abu Dhabi” Cost AED 300 or AED 2,200? The Chaos, Explained

The first page of Google quotes seven different prices for what sounds like one product. Nobody explains what changes between them. Here is every published number, checked today, with the variable that drives it.

30 or 60? Thirty minutes of driving is more than it sounds — most first-timers are happily done. Book 60 only if you have driven off-road before; otherwise spend the difference on the quad or at the camp. Same advice we give at the wheel, and it costs us money to say it.

“Buggy Tour” Does Not Always Mean You Drive — Check One Line Before Paying AED 2,200

The word-by-word detail that changes this whole search: the #1 result sells its AED 2,200 “dune buggy tour” with the buggy “manoeuvred by an expert driver” — you are a passenger. If being behind the wheel is the point, confirm the words “self-drive” before you pay anyone.

  • With us: you drive. Can-Am machines in the 800–1000cc class, full briefing, a guide alongside, from AED 800 per buggy for 30 minutes.
  • No bare rentals — by design. A self-rented, uninsured buggy alone on open dunes is neither safe nor properly legal. Guided self-drive is how every serious Abu Dhabi operator runs it, and it is the only way we will.
  • No licence needed — private desert terrain; the briefing covers everything.
  • Add-on maths: operators sell the camel ride at ~AED 40 and sandboarding at ~AED 50 as extras. At our camp both are already inside the safari your buggy run attaches to.

Can-Am Buggy & Quad Biking Abu Dhabi — FAQ

Do I need a driving licence?

No — a licence is not required for tourist quad and buggy rides. Guides give a full briefing and teach you the controls before you set off.

Is it safe for beginners?

Yes. Every ride includes safety gear, a briefing and a practice loop, and a guide leads the convoy. Complete beginners ride every day; you set your own pace.

What’s the minimum age?

Kids from about 6 can ride speed-limited mini-quads under supervision; higher-power quads and Can-Am buggies are for older teens and adults (16/18+ depending on the machine). Buggy passengers are usually welcome from age 5.

How long does a session last?

Most self-drive sessions run about 1 to 2 hours, covering roughly 10–15 km of desert terrain.

What’s the difference between a Can-Am buggy and a quad?

A Can-Am buggy is a powerful side-by-side you sit in, with a roll cage and seatbelts, and it can carry a passenger. A quad is a lighter four-wheeled bike you sit astride and steer with handlebars.

How much does it cost?

Can-Am buggy experiences start from AED 800. Quad biking starts from AED 200, as a standalone ride or an add-on to a safari. Message us for an instant quote.

Can I combine it with a desert safari?

Yes — a quad or buggy session adds perfectly to any safari, alongside dune bashing, camel rides, camp and dinner.

What should I wear?

Closed shoes, light breathable clothes you don’t mind getting dusty, a buff or scarf for sand, and sunglasses and sunscreen.

Can passengers come who don’t want to drive?

Yes — the Can-Am buggy has a passenger seat, so non-drivers can ride along, belted in beside the driver.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, we recommend booking ahead so we can reserve the right machines and confirm your pickup. Message us on WhatsApp for availability.

What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?

Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.

How much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?

Booking direct with us: AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, AED 100 shared hotel pickup, AED 599 for a private 7-seater car and AED 800 for a private Land Cruiser. Agencies and hotel desks typically charge AED 180 to 250 per person for the same evening because they add commission on top of an operator price.

What time does the desert safari start and finish?

Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.

Where does the desert safari take place?

At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres, which is considerably taller than the roadside dunes some operators use, and there is far less traffic on the sand.

How do I book?

Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day. Free cancellation applies up to 12 hours before.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes on the AED 100 shared pickup, the AED 599 private car and the AED 800 Land Cruiser, covering the whole city including the Corniche, Al Maryah, Al Reem, Downtown, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Shabiya and the airport. The AED 50 package departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall, and AED 35 is self-drive using a GPS pin we send you.

What It Actually Feels Like to Drive the Dunes

There is a particular kind of joy in being the one in control. In a 4×4 dune-bashing session you are a passenger along for the ride; on a Can-Am buggy or a quad, every climb, every turn and every burst of throttle is yours to command. That shift — from spectator to driver — is what makes self-driving so addictive.

In a Can-Am buggy the sensation is raw power and grip. You feel the engine surge as you point the nose up a dune, the seatbelt holds you as you crest the top, and the whole machine leans and bites into the sand as you carve back down. It is loud, fast and enormously fun, yet the roll cage and belts mean you can push hard while staying secure. On a quad, the feeling is more intimate and physical — you lean into corners, shift your weight over the dunes, and feel every ripple of the sand through the handlebars. It rewards a bit of technique and gives you a real sense of riding the desert rather than just crossing it.

What surprises most first-timers is how quickly confidence comes. Within ten minutes of the practice loop, nervous beginners are grinning and asking to go faster. The guides read this perfectly, opening up the terrain as your skill grows, so the ride always feels exciting but never out of control.

Buggy or Quad: Which Should You Choose?

Both are brilliant; the right choice depends on what you want from the day.

If you want…ChooseWhy

Combine Self-Driving With the Full Safari

A quad or buggy session is fantastic on its own, but it is even better as part of a bigger desert day. Because we run our own safaris, you can bolt a self-drive session onto any tour and get the best of both worlds — the adrenaline of driving yourself, plus the culture, food and scenery of a classic safari.

  • Evening safari — ride at sunset, then relax at camp with a BBQ dinner and shows.
  • Morning safari — self-drive in the cool morning air.
  • Dune bashing — pair being driven with driving yourself for the ultimate contrast.
  • VIP safari — a private, premium version with a bespoke ride.

Filming Your Ride

A self-drive session is made for video — and because your hands are on the controls, a mount is the way to capture it. A helmet or chest mount gives a brilliant first-person view of the dunes rushing past, while a guide can film you from outside for the classic “hero shot” cresting a dune. Just make sure anything you carry is properly secured; loose phones and the desert don’t mix. And remember to take the goggles-and-grin selfie at the photo stop — it’s the shot everyone wants afterwards.

Above all, do at least one run without filming. The footage is great to share, but the real memory is the feeling of the throttle under your thumb and the desert opening up in front of you — that’s the part that stays with you long after the dust has settled.

Is Desert Self-Driving Right for You?

Quad biking and buggy driving suit a huge range of visitors, but it helps to know what you are signing up for. If you love the idea of being hands-on — of controlling your own adventure rather than being driven — this is the desert experience for you. It rewards a sense of fun far more than any prior skill, and the guided, geared-up format means even total beginners finish their first session grinning and asking to go again.

It is ideal for adrenaline seekers, groups of friends, couples who want to share a buggy, and families with older kids who are ready for their own machine. Younger children are catered for with supervised mini-quads, so nobody has to sit out. The only guests we gently steer toward the passenger seat or the classic 4×4 safari instead are those with certain back or neck conditions, or anyone who would simply rather relax and take in the scenery than concentrate on driving — and that is completely fine too.

Because our guides tailor the terrain and pace to each rider, the same session can feel gentle and scenic for one person and full-throttle for another. That flexibility is exactly why self-driving works so well for mixed groups: everyone rides at the level that thrills them, together, in one convoy across the same beautiful dunes.

Responsible Riding in the Desert

The Al Khatim dunes are a living landscape, and we ride them with care. Our guides keep groups to sensible routes, avoid sensitive areas, and make sure nothing is left behind at the end of a session. As a rider you can help by staying with the convoy, following your guide’s line, and giving any desert wildlife a wide berth. Treated well, the desert stays pristine — the same clean, sculpted sand that makes riding here so special in the first place. The best kind of adventure is one that leaves nothing behind but tyre tracks the wind smooths away by morning.

Why Ride in the Al Khatim Dunes?

Where you ride matters just as much as what you ride. Royal Arabian Safari runs its self-drive sessions in the Al Khatim desert, about 45 minutes from central Abu Dhabi — and it is the perfect playground for buggies and quads. The dunes here are soft, sculpted and beautifully varied, with gentle rolling sections ideal for building confidence and taller faces for when you are ready to push. Because it is our own base, the terrain is well known, the routes are planned for safety, and the dunes are far less crowded than the busiest tourist spots.

That combination — genuine, varied dunes plus short transfers and expert local guides — is what makes an Al Khatim ride so good. You spend your time actually riding rather than driving for hours to get there, and your guide knows exactly where the best sand, the best light and the safest lines are on any given day. For an even bigger challenge, our Liwa safari takes on the giant mega-dunes of the Empty Quarter.

Pair Your Ride With the Full Desert Experience

Self-driving is the adrenaline; the safari is the atmosphere. Combine them and you get the complete desert day.

Not sure how to combine it all? Send us your dates and group and we’ll build the perfect self-drive-plus-safari day around you.

Good to Know Before You Ride

A little preparation makes your self-drive session smoother and safer. First, arrive rested and hydrated — the desert is dry and an hour or two of active riding takes more out of you than you might expect, so drink plenty of water before and after. Second, eat something light beforehand; you want energy without a heavy stomach. Third, leave valuables and loose items behind or zipped away, as anything not secured can be lost in the sand.

On the day, listen carefully to your briefing — it covers everything you need, from the throttle and brakes to how to take a dune safely and what to do if you get stuck. Don’t worry about mistakes; the guides expect beginners and are right there to help. Ride within your comfort zone, build up gradually, and let the guide know if you want to slow down or take a break at any point. There is no pressure to go fast, and the desert is just as beautiful at a gentle cruise as it is at full throttle.

Finally, bring a sense of adventure and a camera. A quad or buggy session across the Al Khatim dunes is one of those experiences people talk about long after their trip — the freedom of driving yourself, the vastness of the desert, and the simple thrill of the sand rushing past. Book ahead, turn up ready, and we’ll take care of the rest.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
