Where is the Dubai desert safari located?
The Dubai desert safari takes place in the open Arabian Desert that surrounds the city, roughly 35 to 60 km and 35 to 60 minutes drive southeast of central Dubai. The main safari locations are Al Awir, golden rolling dunes and the closest desert to Dubai at about 35 to 40 km southeast; Lahbab, the Red Dunes, tall red dunes about 45 to 50 km out on the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44); and the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR), a protected reserve off the Al Ain Road (E66) used by a few exclusive eco-operators.
Other desert zones you may hear about include Al Marmoom, Margham, Al Qudra and Big Red (Al Badayer), and further out Fossil Rock, Hatta and Liwa. Where Is the Dubai Desert? The Bigger Picture
Dubai sits on the northern edge of the Arabian Desert, the vast sand sea that covers most of the Arabian Peninsula and includes the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter, the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. You do not have to travel far to reach it: drive south or southeast out of the city and within half an hour the buildings give way to open dunes. This is the desert that every Dubai safari runs in.
The desert immediately around Dubai is made up of several named areas, each with its own character. To the southeast, along the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44), lie Al Awir and then the Red Dunes of Lahbab and Al Badayer (Big Red). To the south, off the Al Ain Road (E66), are the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and Margham. Towards Al Qudra are lakes and the Al Marmoom reserve. The sand changes colour and height across these zones, from the pale gold of Al Awir to the deep rust-red of Lahbab, because of differences in mineral content and how the dunes have formed over time.
For a safari, what matters is that the best dunes are close, accessible and safe with an experienced operator. You reach them on well-maintained highways, then leave the tarmac for the sand only in a proper 4×4 with a trained driver. Al Awir: Our Camp and the Closest Desert to Dubai
Al Awir, sometimes spelled Al Aweer, is the desert area on the eastern edge of Dubai, about 35 to 40 km and 35 to 45 minutes from the city centre along the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44). It is the closest open desert to Dubai, which is its biggest advantage: a short transfer means less time on the road and more time in the dunes, and an easier trip for families, older guests and anyone who does not want a long drive.
The sand here is soft, golden and gently rolling rather than towering. That makes Al Awir ideal for a smooth, scenic dune-bashing ride, for first-timers and children, and for beautiful golden-hour photography, while still delivering the real desert feeling. Our own licensed camp sits in these dunes, with all the classic activities: dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding, henna, Arabic costumes, a sunset photo stop, and in the evening eight live shows and a BBQ buffet dinner.
You may read on some operator sites that Al Awir is a lesser location. That usually comes from companies who only run the Red Dunes and want to steer you there. The honest truth is that Al Awir is the most convenient desert for Dubai and perfect for the most popular kind of safari, a relaxed evening of dunes, food and entertainment. Lahbab Red Dunes: The Dramatic Choice
Lahbab, home of the famous Red Dunes, lies about 45 to 50 km and 45 to 55 minutes from central Dubai, a little further along the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44). Its dunes are taller, steeper and a deep rust-red colour, coloured by iron-rich sand, and they form one of the most photographed desert landscapes in the country.
This is the location to choose if you want more dramatic dune bashing, steeper climbs and descents, and striking red-dune photography. It is a favourite for thrill-seekers and photographers, and the slightly longer drive is part of the trade-off for the bigger dunes. The Other Dubai and UAE Desert Locations

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR)
The DDCR is a protected nature reserve off the Al Ain Road (E66), roughly 45 to 60 minutes from the city. Access is restricted to a small number of licensed operators, and the focus is conservation and wildlife, you may see Arabian oryx and gazelle, rather than high-speed dune bashing. It is the premium, eco-minded choice, and tours there are generally more expensive and run by the reserve concession holders.
Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve
Al Marmoom, near Al Qudra, is the UAE first unfenced desert conservation reserve, about 40 to 50 minutes from Dubai. It is known for wildlife, cycling tracks, the Al Qudra lakes and eco-experiences such as stargazing and slow Bedouin-style evenings, rather than adrenaline dune bashing.
Margham
Margham is an area of large golden dunes further out, about 50 to 60 minutes from the city, popular for quieter dune bashing, desert camping and photography away from the busier zones. It is a genuine safari desert, just a longer drive.
Al Qudra
Al Qudra is best known for its man-made lakes and cycling track on the edge of the desert, about 40 to 50 minutes away. It is a popular spot for picnics, birdwatching and weekend cycling rather than a classic dune-bashing safari, though it borders open desert.
Big Red / Al Badayer
Big Red, or Al Badayer, is a famous towering red dune on the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44), about 50 to 60 minutes out and close to the Lahbab area. It is a landmark for quad biking, dune buggies and dune climbing, with rental shops at its base, and a favourite for self-drive off-roaders and adrenaline activities.
Fossil Rock / Jebel Maleihah
Fossil Rock, or Jebel Maleihah, sits across the border in Sharjah, about 60 to 70 minutes from Dubai. The area mixes dunes with a rocky outcrop full of marine fossils, and is popular for off-road driving, geology, and overnight desert camping under dark skies.
Hatta
Hatta is a mountain enclave about 130 km and 90 to 100 minutes from Dubai. It is not a classic sand safari, it is about mountains, the Hatta Dam, kayaking and hiking, but it is often grouped with desert day trips. Worth knowing, though very different from a dune safari.
Liwa
Liwa lies on the edge of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter, in the Abu Dhabi region, about 250 km and two and a half to three hours from Dubai. Its mega-dunes are among the tallest on Earth and the destination for serious overnight desert expeditions, not a casual evening trip from the city.

How Far Is the Desert From Your Area?
Distances to the desert depend on where you start in Dubai, and traffic is the biggest variable at peak times.
Plan on 50 to 65 minutes from your hotel to the camp, depending on which part of Dubai you are picked up from and the traffic that evening. Pickup is included in every safari, so this is for planning your day rather than for driving yourself.
As a rule, the eastern and central areas of Dubai are closest to the Al Awir desert, while Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah on the western side are a little further. None of it is far, which is the point of choosing the closest desert, and our drivers know the quickest route from every district.
Distance vs Travel Time: the Traffic Factor
The kilometre distance to the desert is fixed, but the actual drive time varies with traffic and the time of day. A run that takes 35 minutes in the early afternoon can take 45 to 50 in the rush hour. This is one more reason the closest desert, Al Awir, is the easy choice: less road means less time exposed to traffic, and a more reliable arrival. Evening pickups are deliberately timed to allow for this, so you still reach the dunes comfortably before sunset rather than racing the light.
Our drivers know the live road conditions and take the quickest route from your area, whether that is straight onto the Dubai-Hatta Road from the eastern side of the city or the connector highways from the west. Because pickup is included, the timing is our responsibility, not yours. Pickup Location vs the Safari Location
An important thing many first-timers do not realise: your pickup point and the safari location are two different places. We collect you from your hotel or address in the city, then drive you out to the desert camp. You do not make your own way to the dunes.
We include hotel pickup from across Dubai. Some operators charge a surcharge for far-flung areas such as parts of Jebel Ali, Dubai Investment Park, Discovery Gardens or remote developments, because of the extra distance. We keep this simple, just tell us your exact pickup address when you book and we will confirm the time and whether your area is covered, with no surprises.
How to Reach the Dubai Desert: Routes and Roads
The desert zones around Dubai are reached on a few main highways. Knowing them helps you understand where each location sits, even if your driver does the actual navigating.

For our camp, the route is simple: out of the city onto the Dubai-Hatta Road (E44) towards Al Awir, then off the tarmac into the dunes. The whole transfer is around 35 to 45 minutes from central Dubai. Your driver handles every part of it, including the off-road section, which should only ever be driven in a proper desert-prepared 4×4.
Can You Drive Yourself to the Desert Safari?
You can drive a normal car to the edge of the desert, for example to the base of Big Red or to viewpoints near Al Awir, on the highway. But you should never drive an ordinary vehicle onto the dunes. Soft sand traps standard cars within metres, and dune driving without training, deflated tyres and recovery gear is genuinely dangerous, every season people are rescued, stuck or injured attempting it.
For a safari, the safe and easy answer is to let us pick you up. Our 4×4 vehicles are desert-prepared, our drivers are trained and licensed, and pickup and drop-off are included from your hotel. There is no parking to find, no risk of getting stuck, and no navigation, you simply enjoy the ride. The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable for any location and any time of day, which is also the busiest season, so book ahead. In the peak of summer, the closest desert at Al Awir is the most comfortable choice because the short transfer minimises time in the heat, and a morning safari or a later evening start keeps the active part in cooler air. Facilities at the Desert Location: Toilets, Signal and Access
Practical questions the other location guides skip, answered honestly for our camp.
Are there toilets at the camp? Yes. Our desert camp has clean, separate washrooms for men and women. This is standard at established camps like ours, though very remote, unmanned dune spots have no facilities at all.
Is there phone signal in the desert? At our Al Awir camp, close to the city, you generally have mobile signal and data, enough to message and share photos. Signal weakens the deeper into remote desert you go, so far-out zones like Liwa or Fossil Rock can have patchy or no coverage. Around Al Awir and Lahbab you are usually connected.
Is the desert safari location wheelchair accessible? The dunes themselves are soft sand, which is difficult for wheelchairs, but the camp seating area is flat and we can arrange a gentler experience. If you or a guest has mobility needs, tell us when you book and we will plan a comfortable visit, you can enjoy the camp, dinner and shows even if dune bashing is not suitable.
Is the desert safari safe? Yes, with a licensed operator. Our drivers are trained, our vehicles are maintained and desert-prepared, and the camp is fully set up. The risks come from unguided self-driving and unlicensed operators, not from a proper safari. See our safety approach for full detail.
Common Mistakes When Choosing a Location
A few mistakes catch first-time visitors out. Avoid these and your safari will be smoother.
1. Booking the furthest dunes for a short trip. A long drive eats into your desert time. For a half-day or evening, the closest desert at Al Awir gives you more dunes and less road.
2. Driving your own car onto the sand. Ordinary cars get stuck in soft dunes within metres. Always use a 4×4 with a trained driver, or our guided self-drive convoy.
3. Choosing on price alone from an unlicensed operator. Cheap, unmarked desert spots can mean no proper camp, no toilets and no safety cover. A licensed operator with its own camp is worth it.
4. Assuming the red dunes are always better. They are dramatic, but the gentle golden dunes of Al Awir suit families, children and first-timers far better. Match the location to who is going.
5. Not checking pickup coverage. Confirm your area is included and ask about any surcharge before you book. With us, you simply share your address and we confirm.

If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
