Dune Bashing Dubai: Quick Answers

Is dune bashing in Dubai safe?

Yes. You ride in a 4×4 driven by a licensed desert guide, belted in, at a pace you set. Tell the driver you want it gentle and the run stays smooth. Our vehicles are serviced in-house and carry recovery gear, so a soft-sand stop is never a problem.

How much does dune bashing cost in Dubai?

Dune bashing is included in every safari, not a paid add-on. A seat on a shared 4×4 starts at AED 50 (USD 14) per person; a private vehicle for your group starts at AED 599 (USD 163) per car. You pay the driver after the ride, never a deposit up front.

Is there an age limit for dune bashing?

There is no strict age limit, but we do not recommend hard dune bashing for infants, pregnant guests, or anyone with back, neck or heart issues. Children ride belted between adults and the driver softens the run on request. Tell us your group when booking and we match the vehicle and pace.

Can you do dune bashing without the full desert safari?

Yes. Ask for a private dune bashing run and we build it around your time instead of the full evening camp. Prefer to drive the sand yourself? See our Dubai dune buggy option. Doing this in Abu Dhabi instead? See dune bashing in Abu Dhabi.

What happens after you book your dune bashing

  1. You message us your date, group size and Dubai pickup point. We reply in minutes on WhatsApp with the exact price for your group, no deposit asked.
  2. You get a written confirmation with the price locked, the pickup window, and whether you are on a shared 4×4 or a private vehicle.
  3. The afternoon before, we send your driver name, the 4×4 plate and the pickup time so you know exactly who is coming to your hotel.
  4. You ride, then pay the driver after, cash or card. Tell him gentle or wild and he drives to that.

Still deciding? The honest answers:

  • You pay after the ride, not before. No card details taken to hold a seat.
  • Free cancellation up to 12 hours before pickup, no fee.
  • Nervous rider or young kids? Say so and the driver keeps the run soft. It is your pace, not a fixed track.
  • Extreme heat or a sandstorm? We move you to another slot or refund in full. We never send guests into unsafe sand.
  • Vehicle trouble? We run our own fleet, so a backup 4×4 comes from our camp, not a third party.

  • How much does dune bashing cost in Dubai?: With us, dune bashing is included free in every desert safari, and the safari starts at AED 35 for self-drive, AED 50 by shared bus, AED 100 for a shared 4×4 with hotel pickup, or AED 799 for a private 4×4 for up to seven guests.
  • How long does dune bashing last in Dubai?: On a standard safari the dune-bashing drive lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, including short photo pauses.
  • What time does the desert safari start and finish?: Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.

  • What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?: Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.
  • How do I book dune bashing in Dubai?: Message us on WhatsApp at +971 58 228 2683 with your date, number of guests, pickup area and whether you want a gentle or thrilling drive.

What is dune bashing in Dubai?

Dune bashing in Dubai is an off-road thrill in which a skilled driver powers a 4×4 vehicle up, over and down the desert sand dunes, sliding and surging across the slopes in a controlled, roller-coaster ride. A typical session lasts around 30 to 45 minutes. Before the drive, the driver deflates the tyres from the normal road pressure of about 32 to 35 PSI down to roughly 15 to 18 PSI, which widens the footprint and gives the grip needed to float over soft sand. With us it happens on the gentle golden dunes near Al Awir or the dramatic red dunes at Lahbab, and the driver adjusts the intensity from gentle and scenic to genuinely thrilling on request.

Here is what most pages will not tell you plainly: dune bashing is included free in every one of our desert safari packages, starting at just AED 35 for self-drive, so you are not paying a separate premium for the main event. Below you will find the technique explained with real numbers, an honest safety section covering who should skip it, which dunes suit which thrill level, the full price, and answers to every common question.

How dune bashing works: the technique and the numbers

Dune bashing looks chaotic from the passenger seat, but it is a precise skill. The reason an ordinary 4×4 can climb a slope of loose sand without sinking comes down to one thing most operators mention but never quantify: tyre pressure. On tarmac your tyres sit at roughly 32 to 35 PSI. For the dunes, the driver lets them down to about 15 to 18 PSI. That lower pressure flattens and lengthens the contact patch, spreading the vehicle weight over more sand so the tyres float rather than dig in. It is the single most important step, and it is why you will see the driver stop at the edge of the desert to deflate before the fun begins.

What it actually feels like

The 4×4 noses up a steep face, hangs for a heartbeat at the crest, then drops down the far side as the sand hisses under the tyres. The driver carves sideways along the slopes so the vehicle leans and slides, then powers up the next ridge. It is a series of climbs, slides and gentle weightless dips rather than one continuous rush, with short pauses between the steeper sections. Inside, the cabin is air-conditioned and everyone is belted in, so it feels thrilling but contained, more controlled roller coaster than rally stage.

Why a 4×4, and why an experienced driver matters

Soft sand demands four-wheel drive, low tyre pressure and a driver who can read the dune, judge the firm line, and keep momentum without burying the vehicle or cresting a ridge too fast. Our drivers do this every day across the same dunes, which is what separates a safe, exhilarating ride from a stuck vehicle or a scare. We run modern, well-maintained air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles with seat belts for every passenger. We describe them honestly as 4x4s rather than promising a particular badge, because what keeps you safe is the driver and the maintenance, not the logo.

How long does dune bashing last?

On a standard safari the dune-bashing drive runs about 30 to 45 minutes, including the photo pauses, which is the sweet spot: long enough for a real adrenaline hit, short enough to stay comfortable. If you want more, an extra dune-bashing session can be added, and the longer red-dune drives at Lahbab can be arranged on request. If you would rather skip it entirely, that is completely fine too, which we cover next.

Your first dune bashing, step by step

If it is your first time, here is exactly how the dune-bashing part of the evening unfolds, so there are no surprises.

StepWhat happens
1. Pickup or arrivalHotel pickup in the 4×4, or meet us at the desert edge if you are self-driving
2. Tyre deflationThe driver lets the tyres down to about 15 to 18 PSI for grip on the sand
3. Belt up and briefSeat belts on for everyone; tell the driver if you want gentle or thrilling
4. The driveAround 30 to 45 minutes of climbs, slides and descents, with short photo pauses
5. Sunset stopA pause on a dune for golden-hour photos as the sun drops
6. On to campThe 4×4 brings you to the camp for dinner, the camel ride and the shows

The whole sequence is relaxed and you are in control of the pace throughout. If you want to slow down or stop at any point, just tell the driver.

Where to go dune bashing in Dubai: which dunes for which thrill

Not all Dubai dunes are the same, and the dunes you drive decide how wild the ride feels. We run dune bashing on two very different sets of dunes, and matching them to your group is the difference between a gentle family roll and a heart-in-mouth descent.

Golden dunes at Al Awir

The closest true desert to central Dubai, about 40 minutes away. These are gentler, rolling golden dunes, generally lower and smoother, which makes them ideal for first-timers, families with children and anyone who wants the thrill without the steepest drops. This is where most of our evening safaris run.

Red dunes at Lahbab

The famous Lahbab Red Dunes, around an hour out, are taller and steeper, with some faces rising to roughly 30 metres, about 100 feet. The iron-rich sand glows deep orange-red and the descents are dramatic. This is the choice for thrill-seekers and photographers. Red-dune drives are tailored and priced on WhatsApp.

Match the dunes to your group

WhereDune typeRoughlyThrill levelBest for
Al AwirGolden, rollingLower, gentle slopesMild to mediumFamilies, first-timers, kids
LahbabRed, steepUp to about 30 m facesMedium to highThrill-seekers, photographers

Whichever dunes you choose, you are never locked into one intensity. Tell your driver you want it calmer and they will pick a gentler line; ask for more and, terrain permitting, they will give you the bigger climbs and faster descents. You set the pace, not the brochure.

Best time of day and year for dune bashing

Most dune bashing happens in the late afternoon as part of the evening safari, when the desert has cooled and the drive finishes with sunset over the dunes, the most photogenic moment of the day. If you prefer cooler air and quieter dunes, a morning safari is the calmer alternative. The evening remains the classic because the camp, dinner and shows follow straight on from the drive.

Dune bashing runs all year. The peak season is roughly October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and evenings can feel cool, so bring a light layer. From May to September it is hotter, so we run the drives earlier or later in the day, and the air-conditioned cabin keeps things comfortable throughout. Whatever the month, the dunes are open and the ride is just as much fun.

Is dune bashing in Dubai safe? Who should skip it

Done properly, dune bashing is very safe. The risk comes from doing it badly, so honesty matters here more than hype. Our safety rests on modern, well-maintained air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles, a seat belt for every passenger, drivers who run these exact dunes every day, and an intensity that is always adjustable. The ride is controlled, not reckless. That said, it is a physical activity with real bumps and lateral movement, and it is genuinely not for everyone, so here is the straight advice we would give a friend.

Who should skip dune bashing, or take only the gentle drive

Please sit it out, or ask for the gentlest possible drive and tell us in advance, if you are pregnant, if you have back, neck or spine problems, a heart condition or high blood pressure, if you have had recent surgery, or if you suffer from severe motion sickness. The jolting and sudden direction changes can aggravate these. Very young infants and frail elderly guests are also better suited to a gentle roll or to waiting at the camp. None of this means missing out, because the safari is full of other experiences, and you can still ride out to the desert and enjoy the camp, the camel ride, the dinner and the shows.

A family on a gentle dune bashing drive in Dubai
A family on a gentle dune bashing drive in Dubai

Children and age limits

Children are welcome, and there is no rigid age limit, but for very young children we ask that you tell us in advance so the driver plans a gentle drive from the start. A private 4×4 is the most comfortable choice for families because the whole vehicle is yours and the intensity can be set entirely around your children. For full family detail, see our family desert safari guide.

Simple ways to make it easier on your body

Avoid a heavy meal right before, which is one reason dune bashing is done before dinner. Stay hydrated, keep your seat belt firm, brace gently with your feet, and look ahead at the horizon rather than down, exactly as you would to settle car sickness. If at any point you have had enough, just say so, and the driver will ease off or head to camp. There is never any pressure to push past your comfort.

Your dune bashing comes with a full desert safari

Here is the part that beats a standalone dune-bashing tour: with us the dune bashing is the opening act of a complete desert evening, not a quick drive you pay for on its own. Once the dunes are done, the same trip rolls straight into everything below, all included from AED 35.

Sunset photo stop

A pause on the dunes for the golden-hour photos as the sun drops behind the sand.

Optional add-ons such as a falcon photo, a longer camel ride, quad bikes and the dune buggy are available at the camp. So when you compare us to a tour that charges purely for dune bashing, remember you are getting the drive plus a whole evening. See the full evening desert safari, or build a private trip with our private desert safari.

Dune bashing, quad biking or dune buggy: which desert thrill?

There are three ways to get your adrenaline fix in the Dubai dunes, and they suit very different people. Dune bashing is the one where you sit back and a professional drives; quad biking and the dune buggy put you in the driving seat. Here is how they compare so you can pick, or do more than one.

ActivityWho drivesPriceThrillBest for

If you want the desert thrill without doing the driving yourself, dune bashing is the answer, and it is already included in your safari. If you want to be in control, a quad bike is the hands-on choice on a smaller, nimble machine, while the powerful side-by-side dune buggy is the biggest rush of the three. Plenty of guests enjoy the dune bashing as part of the evening and then add a quad or buggy session at the camp for the full set.

Dune bashing Dubai price: included free from AED 35

This is where we are different. Many Dubai operators charge AED 89 to AED 150 just to get you onto the dunes for an evening. With us, dune bashing is included in every package, and the package itself starts at AED 35. You pick how you travel; the dune bashing comes with all of them.

Want more dune bashing?

If the standard drive is not enough, an extra dune-bashing session is an optional add-on at AED 150 per vehicle, currently 25% off when pre-booked. The taller, steeper red-dune drives at Lahbab are tailored and priced on WhatsApp, since they are longer and run on a different, more dramatic set of dunes.

A standalone dune-bashing or evening tour elsewhere at AED 89 to AED 150 typically gives you the drive and the camp. Our AED 35 self-drive gives you the same dune bashing plus the camel ride, sandboarding, BBQ dinner and shows, and our AED 799 private vehicle splits to roughly AED 86 a head for a group of seven, with the whole 4×4 to yourselves. Every price is shown here in plain text with no surprise charges at the camp, and there is no advance payment.

What to wear and bring for dune bashing

You do not need special gear, just sensible choices. Wear light, comfortable, breathable clothing, with a layer for the evening because the desert cools quickly after sunset, especially from November to March. Closed shoes or sandals both work. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the daytime, and your phone or camera with a power bank for the photos. Secure loose items before the drive, since the vehicle moves a lot, and consider leaving very loose jewellery and hats in your bag until you reach the camp.

Dune bashing Dubai: frequently asked questions

What is dune bashing in Dubai?

Dune bashing in Dubai is an off-road activity where a skilled driver powers a 4×4 up, over and down the desert sand dunes in a controlled, roller-coaster ride. A typical drive lasts 30 to 45 minutes and the tyres are deflated to about 15 to 18 PSI for grip on the soft sand.

How much does dune bashing cost in Dubai?

With us, dune bashing is included free in every desert safari, and the safari starts at AED 35 for self-drive, AED 50 by shared bus, AED 100 for a shared 4×4 with hotel pickup, or AED 799 for a private 4×4 for up to seven guests. Many other operators charge AED 89 to AED 150 just for the evening, so check whether dune bashing is actually included in the price you are quoted.

Is dune bashing in Dubai safe?

Yes, when it is done properly. We use modern, well-maintained air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles with seat belts, experienced drivers who run these dunes daily, and an intensity that is always adjustable. It is still a physical ride, so anyone who is pregnant or has back, neck or heart conditions should take only a gentle drive or skip it.

Is dune bashing free or included in the safari?

Yes. Dune bashing is included free in every one of our desert safari packages from AED 35. You only pay extra if you want an additional dune-bashing session, which is AED 150 per vehicle, or the longer red-dune drive at Lahbab, which is priced on WhatsApp.

How long does dune bashing last in Dubai?

On a standard safari the dune-bashing drive lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, including short photo pauses. Longer drives on the red dunes at Lahbab can be arranged on request.

What is the age limit for dune bashing in Dubai?

There is no rigid age limit and children are welcome, but for very young children we ask that you tell us in advance so the driver plans a gentle drive. A private 4×4 is the most comfortable option for families because you control the intensity.

Can I do dune bashing without the rest of the safari?

Dune bashing is part of the desert safari rather than a separate ticket, so the simplest way is to join a safari, which already includes it from AED 35. If you would prefer a trip with no dune bashing at all, see our desert safari without dune bashing page.

Is dune bashing safe during pregnancy?

No, we do not recommend dune bashing during pregnancy because of the bumps and sudden direction changes. Expecting guests are very welcome to ride gently out to the camp and enjoy the dinner, shows and the rest of the evening, just not the dune-bashing drive itself.

Can children do dune bashing?

Yes, children can join with a gentle drive. Please tell us their ages when you book so the driver sets a suitable intensity from the start. A private vehicle is ideal for families with young children.

Where is the best dune bashing in Dubai?

For the biggest thrill, the red dunes at Lahbab are steeper and more dramatic, with faces up to about 30 metres. For a gentler family ride, the golden dunes near Al Awir are lower and smoother and closer to the city. We run both.

Can I do private dune bashing in Dubai?

Yes. A private 4×4 for up to seven guests is AED 799 and gives you the whole vehicle, so the driver can set the dune-bashing intensity entirely around your group, gentle for families or thrilling for adrenaline-seekers.

Does dune bashing make you feel sick, and how do I avoid it?

It can if you are prone to motion sickness. Avoid a heavy meal beforehand, stay hydrated, keep your belt firm, look ahead at the horizon rather than down, and tell the driver if you want it gentler at any time. This is one reason dune bashing is done before dinner.

What should I wear for dune bashing?

Light, comfortable clothing with a layer for the cooler evening, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and sunscreen for the day. Secure loose items before the drive. See our what to wear guide for a full month-by-month breakdown.

What vehicle is used for dune bashing?

An air-conditioned 4×4 with seat belts for every passenger. We describe our vehicles honestly as well-maintained 4x4s rather than promising a particular brand, because safety comes from the driver and the maintenance, not the badge.

Can I do dune bashing in my own car?

Not in an ordinary car, as soft dunes require four-wheel drive, low tyre pressure and an experienced driver. However, our self-drive option lets you drive your own car to the camp for AED 35, where the dune bashing is done in our 4x4s.

Has there ever been a dune bashing accident in Dubai?

Serious incidents are rare when dune bashing is run by licensed operators with maintained vehicles, seat belts and trained drivers, which is exactly how we operate. The honest risks come from unlicensed or careless providers, which is why we recommend checking that any operator is DTCM-licensed and insured.

What is the difference between red dune and golden dune bashing?

Red-dune bashing at Lahbab is on taller, steeper iron-red dunes for a more dramatic, photogenic ride, while golden-dune bashing near Al Awir is on gentler rolling dunes closer to the city and better for families and first-timers.

Is dune bashing included in the morning safari too?

Yes. Dune bashing is part of both our morning and evening safaris. The morning drive is on cooler, quieter dunes, while the evening finishes with the sunset and the camp dinner and shows.

Can I film or take photos during dune bashing?

Yes, but hold your phone or camera firmly and use a wrist strap, because the vehicle moves a lot. The driver also pauses at a scenic dune for steadier sunset photos, and you can ask to stop for a shot at any time.

How do I book dune bashing in Dubai?

Message us on WhatsApp at +971 58 228 2683 with your date, number of guests, pickup area and whether you want a gentle or thrilling drive. There is no advance payment and you pay on the day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you run desert safaris and tours in Dubai as well as Abu Dhabi?

Yes. We are an Abu Dhabi based DCT-licensed operator running our own camp in the Al Khatim desert, and we also arrange Dubai desert safaris and Dubai city tours. If you are staying in Dubai but want the taller, quieter Abu Dhabi dunes and the lower price from AED 35, we run transfers from Dubai.

What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?

Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.

How much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?

Booking direct with us: AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, AED 100 shared hotel pickup, AED 799 for a private 7-seater car and AED 999 for a private Land Cruiser. Agencies and hotel desks typically charge AED 180 to 250 per person for the same evening because they add commission on top of an operator price.

What time does the desert safari start and finish?

Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.

Where does the desert safari take place?

At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres, which is considerably taller than the roadside dunes some operators use, and there is far less traffic on the sand.

    How do I book?

Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day. Free cancellation applies up to 12 hours before.

    Is hotel pickup included?

Yes on the AED 100 shared pickup, the AED 799 private car and the AED 999 Land Cruiser, covering the whole city including the Corniche, Al Maryah, Al Reem, Downtown, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Shabiya and the airport. The AED 50 package departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall, and AED 35 is self-drive using a GPS pin we send you.

    Do I need a 4×4 for the self-drive option?

No. You drive on tarmac to a meeting point, so any standard car or rental reaches it comfortably. Our team takes over there in a proper 4×4 for the dune bashing.

How long is the dune bashing?

Around 40 to 45 minutes with short breaks. Tyres are deflated to roughly 15 psi first so they float on the sand. Intensity is adjustable at any point — tell your driver you want it gentle and it becomes a scenic drive.

    Is dune bashing safe?

Yes with a licensed operator. Every passenger wears a seatbelt, vehicles are maintained and insured, drivers are trained specifically for dune driving, and vehicles travel in convoy so recovery is immediate. You can ask to stop at any time.

Can I do the safari without dune bashing?

Yes. Book the self-drive package and come straight to the camp, or ask for a direct transfer on a private car. You still get the sunset, camel ride, sandboarding, dinner and every show. This is the right choice for pregnant guests and anyone with back, neck or heart conditions.

What food is served at the camp?

A full BBQ buffet: salads and mezze including fattoush, hummus and Arabic bread; rice dishes, dal, pasta and mixed vegetable sabzi; chicken tikka, shish taouk, lamb seekh kebab and fish from the grill; Om Ali and fresh fruit for dessert. All 100% halal, with unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea.

Are vegetarian and special diets catered for?

Vegetarian options are always available as standard, and the whole buffet is halal. Vegan, Jain, gluten-free and allergy requirements can be accommodated with advance notice — tell us when you book and we will confirm what will be on the table.

    Is alcohol available?

No. Alcohol is not served or permitted at our camp and guests should not bring their own. Unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea are included, and shisha is available at the camp.

    What should I wear?

Loose, light-coloured clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and closed shoes such as trainers you do not mind filling with sand. From October to April bring a jacket — camp temperatures drop to 13 to 22 degrees after sunset. Avoid flip-flops, heels and skinny jeans.

Is the desert safari better in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?

For dunes, quiet and price, Abu Dhabi. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres against generally lower Dubai dunes, there are far fewer vehicles on the sand, the night sky is darker and entry starts at AED 35 against roughly AED 90 to 150 in Dubai. Dubai is more convenient only if you are already staying there.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
