Abu Dhabi to Dubai Taxi Fare: What It Actually Costs

That is the number, and it is the number people are actually searching for. Most pages that rank for this question bury it under three hundred words of “the UAE is a land of contrasts” before telling you anything useful. So it is at the top of this page instead.

But the fare on its own is misleading, because it is a range, and the range is wide for a reason. Two people making the identical journey on the same day can pay AED 255 and AED 330. Here is what moves the number:

The honest headline: budget AED 300 and you will rarely be unpleasantly surprised. Budget AED 250 and you might be.

Before You Book Anything: The Bus Costs AED 21

When the bus is genuinely the right answer

• You are travelling alone or as a couple. There is no group discount on a taxi — you pay the full meter whether the car has one person in it or four. The bus charges per head, and at AED 21 a head it is unbeatable.
• You have a backpack or a cabin bag. Manageable.
• You are not in a hurry. Eight minutes. That is the entire time penalty.
• You are on a budget. AED 21 versus AED 300 is not a close call.

When the bus is the wrong answer

• You have real luggage. Luggage space is limited and you will be wrestling suitcases on and off. This is the most common reason people regret the bus.
• You need door-to-door. The bus drops you at a station — typically Ibn Battuta — not at your hotel. You then need a local taxi at the far end, which erodes the saving.
• You are three or more people. Three bus tickets is AED 63, which is still cheaper — but now you are three people plus bags on public transport, and a private car starts to make sense on comfort rather than pure cost.
• You are travelling with children, elderly relatives, or on a tight schedule.

Why Uber and Careem Cost More on This Route, Not Less

This catches people out because in a lot of the world, Uber undercuts the local taxi. In the UAE it does not, particularly on long intercity runs. What you are actually paying the premium for is cashless payment, a tracked route, and a fixed quote before you get in — which are real benefits, just not financial ones.

There is a second issue that does not show up in the price: drivers sometimes decline cross-emirate trips. A 150 km one-way run leaves the driver with a long empty return leg, and not every driver wants it. You can find yourself cancelled on, twice, while standing outside with your bags.

Read that table honestly and the conclusion is not “always book a private car.” It is: one person, light bag, one way → bus. Two or three people, one way, with bags → taxi. Three or more people, or luggage, or a same-day return → private car. Those are genuinely different situations and they have genuinely different right answers.

How Long Does the Drive Really Take?

If you have a flight, a meeting, or a check-in deadline at the far end, plan against the 2 hour 30 minute figure, not the 1 hour 20 one. The corridor between the two emirates is one of the busiest roads in the country and it does not care about your itinerary.

The best times to travel

• 10am – 2pm. The clearest window of the working day.
• After 7pm. The evening rush has broken and the road opens up.
• Avoid 7–9am heading toward Abu Dhabi — that is the commuter flow.
• Avoid 5–7pm heading back to Dubai — same flow, reversed.
• Friday afternoons are their own category of bad. Build in extra time.

This matters more than it sounds, because on a metered taxi, traffic is not just an inconvenience — it is a bill. The meter runs while you sit still. On a fixed-price private car it is purely an inconvenience, because the price was agreed before you set off.

When a Private Car Is Actually Worth It

We would rather write that sentence and lose the booking than write a page that tells everybody a private car is the answer. It is not the answer for a solo backpacker, and pretending otherwise is how tour companies end up with one-star reviews.

1. Three or more passengers

A taxi charges the same whether one person or four are inside — but a taxi is a sedan. Four adults plus four suitcases does not fit in a sedan, and you will end up taking two taxis, at which point you have paid AED 520–660 one way and split your group across two cars. 2. You have luggage

This is where both the bus and the taxi quietly fail. The bus has limited luggage capacity. A sedan taxi has a boot that fits two large cases and then stops. If you are moving between emirates with a family’s worth of bags, the vehicle size is the entire decision, and the fare is a footnote.

3. You need the driver to wait

This is the one that changes the maths completely, and almost nobody calculates it. Say you are going to Dubai for the day — the Burj, the Mall, lunch, back to Abu Dhabi by evening. With taxis you pay AED 260–330 out, and then at 8pm you are standing on a Dubai street trying to find a cab willing to take a 150 km cross-emirate fare, and paying AED 260–330 again. Total: AED 520–660, two strangers, no luggage storage, and a period of genuine anxiety about whether you will get home.

The alternative is one car, one driver, one fixed price. He waits at the mall. Your bags stay in the boot. You leave when you want. That is not a luxury product — it is straightforwardly cheaper and less stressful than the two-taxi version.

Five Real Scenarios, Five Different Right Answers

Abstract advice is useless at the point of decision. Here are the five situations people are actually in when they search this question, and what we would genuinely tell each of them.

Scenario 1 — Solo backpacker, one bag, one way

Take the E101 bus. AED 21. You will save around AED 280 and lose about eight minutes. There is no version of this where a private car is the right call, and we are not going to invent one. Spend the AED 280 on something in Dubai.

Scenario 2 — Couple, two suitcases, arriving at Abu Dhabi airport, hotel in Dubai Marina

Taxi or a private transfer — the bus is out. Two large cases plus a bus plus a change at the far end is a miserable evening. A metered taxi will run you AED 260–330 and drops you at the hotel door. A private car costs more but is fixed-price and the driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a board. If the flight lands late at night or you are nervous about arriving somewhere new, pay for the private car. Otherwise, the taxi is fine.

Scenario 3 — Family of five, two children, luggage, Abu Dhabi to Dubai

Private car, and it is not close. Five people and luggage do not fit in a sedan taxi, so the taxi option is really two taxis: AED 520–660, with your family split across two vehicles and your children in a car you have not vetted. A single 7-seater with one driver is cheaper, safer and less stressful. This is the scenario the product exists for.

Scenario 4 — Day trip to Dubai, back the same evening

Private car with the driver waiting. This is the case where the taxi maths quietly doubles and nobody notices until it is too late. Out: AED 260–330. Back: AED 260–330 again — assuming you can find a driver at 9pm willing to take a 150 km cross-emirate run, which is a real assumption and not always a safe one. Meanwhile your bags have been with you all day because there was nowhere to put them. One car that waits solves all of it for one price.

Scenario 5 — Business traveller, one person, needs to be there at 9am

Pre-booked private car, or a taxi if you are relaxed about it. Not the bus — not because of cost, but because a 9am arrival means travelling through the 7–9am rush and you need control over departure time, not a timetable. And on a meter, that rush hour is AED 50+ of extra fare for the privilege of sitting still. A fixed price removes that risk entirely.

Practical Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Can you pay a taxi by card?

Most licensed taxis in both emirates accept card, but not all of them, and not always reliably — machines fail, and a failed machine at the end of a 150 km ride is an awkward conversation. Carry enough cash to cover roughly AED 350 as a fallback. On a pre-booked private transfer this is a non-issue: you agree the price and the payment method in advance.

Is the drive safe?

Yes. The E11 is a modern, well-lit, heavily policed motorway and the UAE has strict enforcement on speed and lane discipline. Night driving on this corridor is not a meaningful risk factor. The genuine risks on this route are fatigue and traffic, not danger.

Child seats

Standard taxis do not carry child seats, and you cannot rely on one being available. If you are travelling with an infant or toddler, ask for a child seat when you book a private car — tell us in the WhatsApp message and it will be in the vehicle. This is a genuine, practical reason families choose a private transfer over flagging a cab, and it has nothing to do with luxury.

What about renting a car and driving yourself?

Perfectly viable if you are staying several days and want to explore — the roads are excellent and signage is in English. For a single one-way transfer it makes little sense, because you then have a rental car in the wrong emirate and either a one-way drop fee or a return leg you did not want. Salik toll gates are also charged to the rental company and billed back to you with an admin fee on top.

Do you get charged for the driver’s return journey?

With a metered taxi, no — you pay for your leg only, which is exactly why some drivers are reluctant to take the trip. With a private transfer the return leg is priced into the quote, which is part of why a private car is not AED 21. We would rather explain that honestly than pretend our costs do not exist.

The Four Mistakes People Make on This Route

• Assuming Uber is cheaper. It is not, on this corridor. It is AED 300–450+ against AED 250–320 for a street taxi.
• Budgeting one way when they need two. The single most expensive error. A same-day return by taxi is AED 520–660, not AED 300.
• Travelling at rush hour on a meter. You are paying by the minute to sit still. Move your trip to 10am–2pm or after 7pm and you save both time and money.
• Taking the bus with three suitcases. The bus is brilliant and it is AED 21 — but it is brilliant for people with one bag. Luggage is where it stops being the right answer.
