Is September a good month for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

September is a genuinely good safari month with one honest condition: know which September you are booking. The first half still behaves like high summer, with afternoons on the warm side of the 40.9°C monthly average. The second half is the turn itself — the hot season winds down in the final week, and evenings begin to feel like the prime season everyone waits for.

The most useful thing we can tell you: the light turns before the temperature does. The normals show skies clearing from early September, while the heat takes another two to three weeks to follow. Photographers notice it immediately; thermometers take longer to agree.

That makes September the anticipation month. It will not outperform November on comfort, but it beats the core summer months on sky quality — and it delivers the calmest camp of the year, with no holidays or festivals to squeeze around.

Two Septembers, one booking decision

Early-month guests should book exactly as they would for August: an evening timed around sunset, or a private dawn morning. Late-month guests get something closer to October at its opening — clear horizons, easing nights, a near-empty desert. Both are worth doing; they are different products of the same month.

The official climate normals give September a 40.9°C average high and a 27.4°C average low, with essentially zero rainfall and city humidity near 60 per cent. You are collected in air-conditioning at the day’s hottest point, reach the dunes as the light lowers, take sunset on a high ridge between 6:11 and 6:41 PM depending on your date, and spend the whole camp evening on the cool side of the turn. What should you wear for a September desert safari?

Dress for summer with the sun in mind: the lightest breathable fabrics you own, in light colours, with sunglasses and a cap for any daylight time on the sand. September is the last month of the year where we say bring nothing warm at all — no jacket, no evening layer. That advice flips completely by the winter months.

Loose beats tight, and long beats short if you burn easily — a thin long-sleeved shirt earns its keep at the dune line. Most guests end up barefoot on the sunset dunes, but pack closed shoes if you plan to quad bike, and a light scarf in case a breeze lifts loose sand. Our prices do not move with the calendar — September’s rate card is the same one winter guests pay, from AED 35 per person for the evening self-drive option. What September changes is availability: this is the easiest month of the year to get exactly the date, vehicle and add-ons you want.

Planning a September safari: booking, events and logistics

September needs less planning than any month we operate. No major festival or public holiday lands inside it — National Day, the Grand Prix weekend and the Liwa festival all come later in the year — so the camp runs at its calmest rhythm. Booking a day or two ahead is normally enough, and same-day requests often work outside weekends.

If your dates fall in Ramadan weeks

The Islamic calendar moves about ten to eleven days earlier each year, so Ramadan periodically crosses September — always check your own dates rather than assuming. When it does, safaris keep operating: dinner aligns naturally with after-sunset timing, some music and dance performances may be limited on certain days, and the Tanoura and fire shows generally continue.

Pick October if your dates are free, late September if they are flexible by a week or two, and book August-style — evening around sunset, or a dawn morning — if you are locked to the month’s start. September’s edge over both neighbours is emptiness: neither August’s heat ceiling nor October’s returning demand.

Taking children on a September desert safari

Yes — the evening safari works for families in September, with one honest note: early in the month the pre-sunset dune window is still hot, so keep small children shaded and drinking until the sun drops. From the sunset stop onwards, the short camel ride, henna, falcon photos and shows all happen in mild air.

Water, soft drinks and tea are unlimited at camp, the BBQ buffet has plenty children actually eat, and the VIP majlis upgrade (+AED 50 per person) reserves a family its own seating near the stage. September quietly hands photographers their tools back. Skies clear from early in the month while sunset still lands between 6:41 and 6:11 PM — squarely inside the dune drive and sunset stop — so sharpening horizons and perfectly placed golden hour arrive in the same frame. After the milky distances of deep summer, the first clear ridge line feels like a lens cap coming off.

Work the whole timeline: side-lit dune texture in the last hour before the stop, crests smoking when a breeze lifts the dry powder, and blue hour over the camp lanterns — the shot most guests miss because dinner smells too good. Can you stargaze on a September safari?

Sometimes — and it gets better by the week. Desert operators’ consensus puts the reliable clear-sky stargazing window at October to March, so September is the preview month: residual summer haze can soften the sky early on, while late-month nights over Al Khatim increasingly show real stars, helped by sunset falling before 6:15 PM at the close.

Quads, buggies and sandboarding in September heat

Every activity runs in September; the craft is in when you take it. Machines mean boots-on effort, so we point riders at the two cool ends of the day — dawn slots on the private morning, or the later window of the evening programme once the sun is low.

Quads ride at AED 100 single and AED 150 double, with the morning long-route upgrade at +AED 200 / +AED 300 — in early September, that dawn long route is the best motorised hour the month offers.
