Is March a good month for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

March is an excellent month — the last one in which the entire day, not just the evening, stays pleasant. Average highs of 29.7°C sit at the top of the comfortable band, nights hold at 17.5°C, and winter rain has left the dunes firm underfoot. The only caveat is the final ten days, when the air begins to feel heavier.

What separates March from deep winter is that nothing has to be worked around. In January you plan for cold at camp after dark; in May you plan around the afternoon. In March the pickup is comfortable, the dune run happens in shirt sleeves, and the sky still clears after dark. One row deserves a second look: although 61% humidity is lower than January’s 68%, late-March evenings still feel stickier — warmer air carries more moisture at the same percentage.

Why March is the last fully comfortable month

Because of what comes next. The step from March to April is the steepest single-month warming in the Abu Dhabi calendar — average highs climb 5.3°C. March is the top of the comfortable plateau; April is the first stride down the other side.

What does a March safari actually feel like, hour by hour?

Comfortable from the first minute to the last, which is rarer than it sounds. You leave the city at around 29°C, drop into the dunes while the light is strong, watch the sun go down between 6:25 and 6:38 PM, and finish the night at a temperature most guests call perfect.

The equinox: what twelve hours of daylight changes

Around the twentieth of March, day and night fall level and Abu Dhabi gets roughly twelve hours of daylight. Sunset moves thirteen minutes later across the month — 6:25 PM to 6:38 PM — the last comfortable stretch before summer pushes it past seven o’clock. March shares that daylight length with September: astronomical twins, an eleven-degree gap in average high.

Does it rain on a March desert safari?

Rarely — but March is statistically the wettest month of the year here, roughly 13 mm across about three days. That is the highest monthly total in the normals and still a very small number: around twenty-eight days record nothing at all.

Here is the part no competitor tells you: a shower is good news for the sand. Rain packs the surface layer, and for a day or two the dunes hold a firmer line under the tyres — our drivers enjoy those evenings. Sandboarding is the one activity that suffers, since damp sand is slow. The air afterwards is the cleanest all year.

Morning or evening safari in March?

Take the evening for the full experience and the morning if you want the dunes to yourselves. March is one of the few months where this is genuine preference rather than heat management: a dawn start sits around 17.5°C and the 3:00 PM pickup is equally fine. In summer that choice vanishes.

What should you wear on a March desert safari?

Light layers, plus one warm layer you will only need after nine. March asks less of your packing than any other month: no coat, no thermals, no heat-management wardrobe. Cotton or linen, shoes you do not mind filling with sand, a jumper for camp.

What does a desert safari cost in March?

Planning a March trip: weekends, booking pressure and Ramadan weeks

March sits at the tail of peak season, so the camp is busy without being frantic. Weekend evenings fill first — the last weekends more than the first, as residents squeeze in a final comfortable desert night before the heat. Midweek we can usually take a same-day booking.

Because the Islamic calendar runs 354 to 355 days, Ramadan moves about ten or eleven days earlier each year and can overlap part of March. In Ramadan weeks safaris still run: the drive, dunes and camp are unchanged, dinner aligns with after-sunset timing, and Tanoura and the fire show generally continue, though music may be limited on some days.

February is cooler at midday; April has hotter days but keeps excellent evenings; March sits between them with the best all-round balance. If your trip can move by a fortnight, here is the comparison.

Photography in March: clean light, first haze, and the sandstorm myth

March gives photographers a rare combination: winter-clear air for most of the month, twelve hours of daylight, and a sunset late enough at 6:25 to 6:38 PM that golden hour does not collide with the drive out. Dune shadows in the last hour are long and far kinder than flat summer light.

The honest caveat is the closing stretch, when warmer air softens the horizon on some days. It is gentle haze, not a wall — shoot the nearest ridge lines and the softness works for you.

One myth worth killing: there is no spring sandstorm season in Abu Dhabi. Dusty shamal conditions belong mostly to early summer, roughly June into mid-August, with brief blows in winter. Is March the last good month for stargazing?

It is the closing month of the clear-sky window. In our experience, and by common consensus among operators working these dunes weekly, the reliable stargazing season runs October through March; from April, warmer air and haze cut the sharp nights. March still delivers plenty, especially early on.

The practical detail is timing. With sunset before 6:40 PM, darkness arrives while you are still eating, so the stars are out before the shows finish. Step away from the camp lights, let your eyes adjust, and the difference 80 km from the city makes is obvious.

Families, activities and what firm March sand does to the ride

March is the easiest month of the year for bringing children and older relatives into the desert. Nobody overheats on the dune run, the camp is comfortable without heavy clothing, and the programme suits people who dislike extremes. We soften the dune bashing on request.

The sand behaves differently after the winter rain window. A firmer surface gives quad bikes better grip and makes the buggy feel more planted, while sandboarding runs slower than on powder-dry summer sand.
