Yes — for most travellers it is the best month of the year in the dunes. December pairs warm 26.5 °C afternoons with cool 15.7 °C nights, almost no rain and the year’s earliest sunsets, so the safari runs in low, flattering light and ends under real stars. The trade-off is company.

December sits between November’s 31.0 °C days and January’s 24.5 °C — warm enough that nobody shivers through dinner, cool enough that four o’clock dune bashing is a pleasure rather than an endurance test.

What to Wear on a December Desert Safari

Morning or Evening Safari in December?

Evening for the full experience, morning for silence. The evening programme from AED 35 gives dune bashing, the sunset stop, dinner and the shows; the private morning premium safari at AED 700 per car gives cold-clean air and untouched dunes.

UAE National Day, December 2–3

A public holiday and a real local occasion — flags on every car, families out in force. It is one of the few dates when the camp fills with Emirati and resident guests rather than visitors. Book earlier in the week than usual and expect slower city roads at pickup.

Liwa Festival and the Holiday Fortnight

From mid-December the festival takes over Moreeb Dune with hill climbs and crowds, hours south-west of the city — no effect on an Al Khatim evening, which is the point: the quiet camp while the spectacle runs elsewhere. How Busy Is December — and How Far Ahead Should You Book?

December is the busiest desert month of the year, but not evenly: demand comes in three waves — National Day, a calmer middle stretch, then the holiday fortnight. Private vehicles go first; shared seats hold on longest.

Rain, Wind and What Cool Nights Do to the Sand

Rain is a rounding error: about 8 mm over roughly two days all month, and inland Al Khatim usually sees less than the coast. The wetter window is January to March. A December shower means fifteen minutes of light rain and a programme that carries on.

Cool nights change the sand itself. Overnight moisture packs the surface layer firmer than August’s sun-blasted powder, so vehicles hold a line more predictably on the big faces. Boards run slower on a cool morning face and quicken once the sun dries the crest, barefoot walking is comfortable all day, and tracks stay sharp for hours. December gives more usable darkness inside a safari than any other month: with the sun down before 5:45 PM and the camp running until around ten, you get four hours of genuine night — and operators agree the October-to-March window offers the clearest skies.

Getting to Our Al Khatim Camp in December

The camp sits about 80 km east of the city just off the E22 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain highway — 50 to 60 minutes, on a road running away from the evening traffic rather than into it. Hotel pickups leave 3:00–3:30 PM citywide, Yas and Saadiyat included. Self-drivers pay AED 35 and get a pin; any saloon car reaches the meeting point on tarmac. The AED 50 bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall stays the cheapest way in, and on National Day we allow extra time for celebration traffic.
