Desert Safari Abu Dhabi at Christmas: Early Stars & Balmy Days

The sweetest slice of Abu Dhabi’s winter: 26.5 °C afternoons, sunset by 5:45 PM, stars before dinner. Our private Al Khatim camp runs its full programme on December 25 and 31, from AED 35 per person.

The Short Answer

Christmas is one of the best times of all for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi — arguably the finest week of the winter peak. Official climate normals put late December at a 26.5 °C daytime high and 15.7 °C night low, with sunset between roughly 5:35 and 5:45 PM by naval observatory tables, so dune bashing runs in golden light and stars are out before the BBQ buffet opens. Our camp operates normally on December 25 and 31 at standard rates — evenings from AED 35. The catches: peak-season demand and a cool night, so book a few days early and pack a proper jacket.

Is Christmas a Good Time for a Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi?

Yes — Christmas week sits dead-centre in Abu Dhabi’s peak desert season. The tourism board calls winter here “perfectly balmy”, with daytime temperatures around 25 °C, and late December delivers exactly that: warm-shirt afternoons, golden light and cool, dry evenings built for coffee and dates around a camp.

What makes the window special even within winter is comfort plus darkness. Days are mild, yet the year’s shortest daylight — about 10 hours 35 minutes — hands you a full desert night by early evening. Nobody flies home saying the evening desert safari was too hot or too rushed in Christmas week. The trade-off is popularity: flights and hotels peak, and camps host their fullest evenings of the season — hence the booking advice below.

December by the Numbers: What the Christmas Window Delivers

Official climate normals give December a 26.5 °C average high and 15.7 °C low, with sunset drifting out to 5:45 PM by New Year’s Eve. Rain is a rounding error — about 8 mm over two days all month — and the inland desert runs drier than the city’s 69% coastal humidity figure.

The practical read: plan around the early sunset, pack one warm layer, forget about rain.

What the Safari Feels Like in Christmas Week, Hour by Hour

Expect a mild, sunlit pickup, dune bashing in long golden light, sunset from a ridge before 5:45 PM, then a cool, dark camp evening. The whole arc — warmth fading into starlight — happens earlier and more gently than in any other season, exactly why this week books out first.

Where an August guest chases shade, a Christmas guest chases the last warm sun before dune bashing begins. The stop-by-stop schedule lives on our safari timings page.

Operator note: the 26.5 °C high and 15.7 °C low sit ten degrees apart, and you’ll live through most of that swing in one seven-hour safari. Dress for the end of the evening, not the start.

Why Early Sunsets Mean Early Stars at Christmas

Because the sun is down by 5:45 PM at the latest, the desert sky is fully dark well before dinner — so children who’d be asleep for a summer stargazing session get a genuine starfield by early evening. It’s the most underrated feature of a Christmas-week safari.

Midsummer sunsets near 7:15 PM push true darkness past young bedtimes; a ~5:40 PM Christmas sunset leaves three-plus dark hours inside the normal safari window. Operator consensus puts the clear-sky window at October to March, and our camp sits 80 km from the city glow. If the sky is your main event, read the desert stargazing guide — or sleep under it on an overnight desert safari.

Does the Camp Run Normally on December 25 and 31?

Yes. Our Al Khatim camp runs its complete standard programme on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve — same timings, same inclusions, same published prices. We don’t close, we don’t sell a separate “gala package”, and we don’t add holiday surcharges.

And we’re straight about what we don’t do: no turkey, no tree, no staged Santa. December 25 dinner is the same veg and non-veg BBQ buffet, coffee and dates we serve all season, with the three shows after — an honest Arabian evening rather than an imported hotel theme.

New Year’s Eve works beautifully unchanged: the safari returns around 10:00–10:30 PM, back in the city with time to spare before midnight. Dunes at dusk, fire show by evening, celebrations at twelve.

Good to know: payment is on arrival and cancellation free to 12 hours, so booking early for Christmas carries zero financial risk — you lock the date, your money stays with you.

Morning or Evening Safari in Christmas Week?

Evening is the classic Christmas choice — mild days mean you sacrifice nothing to heat, and you gain sunset, dinner, shows and stars. The private morning safari (AED 700 per Land Cruiser) is the connoisseur’s alternative: empty dunes, crisp air and low golden light with no other vehicle in sight.

Many visitors do both — a quiet morning desert safari for the dunes, the evening for the feast. In winter the morning’s advantage is solitude and light, not heat avoidance; the long quad route (+AED 200 single, +300 double) adds bite.

What Should You Wear to the Desert at Christmas?

Dress in layers with a proper jacket for after dark — not a token cardigan. The afternoon starts T-shirt warm around 26 °C, but once the sun drops at ~5:40 PM the open desert cools quickly toward a 15.7 °C low, and you’ll feel every degree sitting still at dinner.

Our formula: light top for the drive out, long trousers, trainers (closed shoes win on quads and sandboards), then a fleece or light jacket that comes out at sunset. A scarf doubles as ridge-top wind cover. Carry one extra layer per child — kids run hot on the sandboards and cold at dinner. Full packing list in our what-to-wear guide.

The mistake we see every Christmas: guests pack for the scorching desert they imagine, not the one in front of them. In late December nobody overheats at our camp — but every night someone shivers. Hot tea helps; the jacket helps more.

The Crowded Calendar Around Christmas: National Day, the F1 Tail and the Liwa Festival

Christmas doesn’t arrive alone. December opens with the National Day holiday on the 2nd and 3rd, catches the tail of the Yas Marina Grand Prix window, and runs alongside the Liwa International Festival at Moreeb Dune from mid-December into early January. Each event bends demand — none touches the calm at Al Khatim.

EventWhenEffect on your plans
UAE National DayDecember 2–3 public holidayCamps fullest with local families — book earlier in the week
Abu Dhabi Grand PrixTypically a late-November / early-December weekendRoads near Yas busy on race days; race trippers add a desert evening

Christmas & Boxing DayDecember 25–26Normal programme; heaviest tourist demand begins
New Year’s EveDecember 31Standard evening; back ~10:00–10:30 PM, in time for midnight

Petrolheads should consider a dedicated Liwa desert safari to watch machines attack Moreeb Dune while the festival runs; for a camp evening without the motorsport crowd, Al Khatim gives you 100-metre dunes 50–60 minutes from your hotel.

How Far Ahead Should You Book in Christmas Week?

Two to four days ahead is comfortable for shared evening seats; private cars deserve a week. That’s honest guidance from more than a decade of Decembers, not sales theatre — most of the year, booking the night before is fine.

The squeeze is specific: shared seats flex with demand, but private vehicles — the 7-seater at AED 599 and the Land Cruiser at AED 800 — exist in fixed numbers, and Christmas is when extended families want exactly those. December 24–26 and 30–31 fill first. Since there’s no deposit and cancellation is free to 12 hours, message us the moment flights are fixed, hold your evening, and adjust later if plans move.

A Family Christmas in the Dunes

Christmas week is the most family-friendly safari window of the year: mild afternoons for sandboarding, an early sunset so young children see real desert stars hours before bedtime, and a camp evening of camel rides, henna, falcon photos and fire show — a ready-made family celebration with zero planning.

The early dark is the quiet hero: a child who naps in the car at 3:15 PM wakes for dune bashing, watches the sun drop before 5:45 PM, and is pointing at constellations by dinner. Add the falcon photo (AED 30), the long camel ride (AED 300 for two), or quads for teens — AED 100 single, 150 double. For three-generation trips, the VIP majlis upgrade (+AED 50 per person) gives grandparents cushioned front-row seating and table service. More in our family safari guide.

Christmas Week vs Late November vs Mid-January

All three windows sit inside the winter prime, so you’re choosing between shades of excellent. Late November is warmer with the year’s earliest sunsets; Christmas is the celebratory peak; mid-January is a touch cooler and noticeably calmer once the New Year exodus clears.

Who Should Pick Christmas Week — and Who Shouldn’t

Christmas week is made for you if… you’re escaping a northern winter and want warmth without punishing heat; you want stars out before the kids fade; you’d rather your December 25 or 31 dinner be a dune-side BBQ than a hotel set menu; or you’re pairing a festive city break with one unforgettable desert evening and can book a few days ahead.
Pick a different window if… you dislike sharing a season — mid-January and February offer near-identical conditions with lighter demand; your budget is airfare-sensitive, since Christmas flights and hotels (not our safari prices) are the year’s dearest; you want long daylight for an all-day itinerary — March’s ~12-hour days serve better; or you crave solitude — then book the private morning safari even in Christmas week.

Photographing the Desert in the Christmas Window

Late December is prime photography weather: the sun stays low all day, summer haze is long gone, and golden hour lands conveniently at 4:30–5:45 PM instead of past 7 PM. Winter’s clearer, drier air gives crisp dune edges and honest colour.

Work the sequence: side-lit ripples on the drive in, silhouettes at the ~5:40 PM sunset stop, blue hour over the camp lights — all inside the standard evening. After dark, step beyond the camp lights and the October-to-March clear-sky window does the rest. Phone shooters lose nothing — the low sun does the work — and if you’d rather stay in the frame, pro photography starts from AED 50, with the falcon portrait (AED 30) the most-shared shot guests take home.

Getting to Al Khatim in the Holiday Rush

Our camp sits about 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city off the E22 Al Ain highway — 50 to 60 minutes door-to-dune, on a route that skips the holiday corniche traffic. Hotel pickups run 3:00–3:30 PM citywide, Yas and Saadiyat resorts included; self-drivers get a pin and arrive on their own schedule for AED 35.

Coming from Dubai? The from-Dubai guide keeps the round trip painless even in Christmas traffic. Budget travellers: the AED 50 shared bus leaves from Al Wahda Mall and Mazyad Mall — the cheapest pickup in the emirate’s most expensive fortnight.

Christmas-traffic tip: on National Day, race weekend and New Year’s Eve we plan pickups around road closures and celebration traffic — one more reason to confirm your hotel and timing on WhatsApp the day before.

Christmas Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christmas a good time for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

Yes — it’s one of the year’s best weeks. Official climate normals give late December a 26.5 °C high and 15.7 °C low, the tourism board’s “perfectly balmy” winter, with sunset at ~5:35–5:45 PM for golden light and early stars. The only downside is peak demand; a few days’ notice solves it.

Is the desert safari open on Christmas Day?

Yes — December 25 is a normal operating day at our Al Khatim camp. Pickup runs 3:00–3:30 PM, the full programme goes ahead — dune bashing, camel ride, buffet, all three shows — and you’re back around 10:00–10:30 PM. Prices stay at published rates, from AED 35 per person. It’s a popular date, so book ahead.

Does the camp do a special Christmas dinner?

No — and we say so rather than invent one. December 25 dinner is our standard veg and non-veg BBQ buffet with Arabic coffee and dates, followed by belly dance, Tanoura and the fire show. Most guests prefer that authentic evening; if you want turkey, the city’s hotels have it covered.

Is it cold in the desert at Christmas?

After dark, genuinely cool — the December average low is 15.7 °C, and the open desert sheds heat fast once the ~5:40 PM sunset passes. Afternoons are warm around 26.5 °C, so the chill catches people out. Bring a real jacket or fleece, plus an extra layer per child.

What time is sunset during Christmas week?

Between about 5:35 and 5:45 PM, per naval observatory tables — December opens near the year’s earliest sunsets and ends at 5:45 PM on New Year’s Eve. The sunset stop lands roughly two hours after pickup, and the camp is fully dark by dinner on the year’s shortest days.

How far in advance should I book a Christmas-week safari?

Two to four days for shared evening seats; up to a week for private vehicles. December 24–26 and 30–31 fill first, and the private Land Cruiser (AED 800) and 7-seater (AED 599) go before shared seats. Early booking costs nothing — no deposit, payment on arrival, free cancellation to 12 hours.

Do safari prices go up over Christmas and New Year?

Ours don’t. The evening safari stays at AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 shared bus and AED 100 hotel pickup through the holiday fortnight, and every add-on keeps its published rate. Flights and hotels do peak — which makes the safari one of the best-value evenings of a Christmas trip.

Can we do the safari on New Year’s Eve and still be back for midnight?

Comfortably. The evening returns around 10:00–10:30 PM, leaving over an hour to reach your hotel or a viewing spot before twelve. Many guests make it their signature New Year’s Eve — dunes at sunset, fire show by evening, city fireworks at midnight. Confirm your pickup point the day before.

How busy is the desert safari at Christmas?

It’s the fullest fortnight of the season — our liveliest camp evenings run December 24 to January 2. That energy suits celebrating families; for space, take the private morning safari (AED 700 per car) the same week, or shift to mid-January for near-identical weather with fewer travellers.

Is a Christmas desert safari good for kids?

Outstanding — arguably the year’s best week for them. Mild afternoons make sandboarding easy, the ~5:40 PM sunset means children see real stars by dinner rather than past bedtime, and the camp bundles camel rides, henna and a fire show into one celebration. The 10:00–10:30 PM return suits all but the smallest.

Morning or evening safari at Christmas?

Evening for the classic celebration — sunset, BBQ dinner, shows and stars from AED 35. Morning for solitude and photography: the private premium safari (AED 700 per Land Cruiser) delivers empty dunes in crisp air. First-timers should default to evening and add a morning if the dunes hook them.

Does it rain in Abu Dhabi in late December?

Rarely and briefly. Official climate normals show about 8 mm across roughly two rain days in the whole month, and inland Al Khatim sees less than the coast. In more than a decade we’ve never lost a Christmas week to weather; if conditions ever force a change, rebooking is free.

What should I wear for a Christmas desert safari?

Layers: a light top for the warm 3 PM pickup, long trousers, closed shoes, and a proper jacket or fleece for after sunset, when the air heads toward 15.7 °C. A scarf helps on the breezy sunset ridge, and trainers beat sandals for quads and sandboarding.

Can you see stars on a Christmas safari?

Yes — Christmas sits inside the October-to-March window operators agree offers the clearest desert skies. With sunset before 5:45 PM, full darkness arrives before dinner, and our camp lies 80 km from the city glow. Step beyond the camp lights after the fire show and let your eyes adjust.

Does the Liwa festival affect a Christmas safari at Al Khatim?

Only positively. The Liwa International Festival runs mid-December to early January at Moreeb Dune, hours deeper into the desert — its crowds never reach Al Khatim. If you want the festival spectacle, we run separate Liwa trips; for a classic camp evening near the city, Al Khatim is the quieter choice.

Do safaris run on UAE National Day?

Yes, at full tilt — December 2–3 is a public holiday and one of the camp’s busiest local-family dates, separate from the Christmas wave. If your trip covers early December, book that evening earlier in the week than usual and allow extra pickup time for celebration traffic.

Is the desert safari suitable for grandparents joining a Christmas trip?

Yes. Dune bashing intensity is always adjustable — tell the driver and he’ll run a gentler line. The VIP majlis upgrade (+AED 50 per person) adds cushioned front-row seating with table service, and December’s cool, dry evenings are far kinder to older guests than summer heat. Mention mobility needs on WhatsApp.

What if our winter dates fall in Ramadan weeks?

Safaris keep running. The Islamic calendar shifts about 10–11 days earlier each year, so in some years Ramadan weeks touch the winter season. Dinner then aligns naturally with after-sunset timing, Tanoura and fire shows generally continue, and music or dance may be limited on some days. Message us your dates to confirm.

A Christmas the Whole Table Remembers

Strip away the tinsel and Christmas week here offers 26 °C sunshine, sunset before 5:45 PM and a glowing camp under early stars — the year’s most comfortable desert at its most celebratory moment, at the same price as any Tuesday. We’ll be at the camp on the 25th and 31st, coffee pots full.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
