Is April a good month for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

Yes, outstandingly so, provided you book the evening. April pairs a 35.0°C average high with a 21.1°C average night low, almost no rain, 53 per cent humidity and sunsets stretching to 6:51 PM. The afternoon is real heat; from about five o’clock the month is close to perfect.

The mistake is judging April by a midday figure. No safari touches midday. Pickup runs 3:00–3:30 PM, the hottest remaining hour is spent inside an air-conditioned Land Cruiser on the E22, and the sands arrive near 4:30 PM with the sun already dropping.

What separates April from every month after it is the night. Its 21.1°C low is the last under 22°C before autumn: May jumps to 24.6°C, June to 26.9°C. Why April’s evenings beat its afternoons

Roughly fourteen degrees separate April’s average high from its average low, and the safari sits on the cooling side of that swing. Loose dune sand holds far less heat than city tarmac, so once the sun drops below the crest line it sheds warmth fast: by the time the BBQ buffet is served, camp air is heading for that 21.1°C low while the city still radiates the afternoon back.

The sunset clock helps too. In January the sun is gone by 5:46 PM; in April it holds until 6:39–6:51 PM, so dune bashing, sandboarding, the camel ride and the photo stops all happen in usable light, while dinner still happens under stars.

What does an April desert safari feel like, hour by hour?

It starts warm and ends fresh. Pickup at 3:00–3:30 PM catches the day near its 35.0°C peak, the dunes arrive around 4:30 PM, sunset lands between 6:39 and 6:51 PM, and the camp night settles towards 21.1°C. Here is the timeline first-timers rarely picture correctly.

April is not one month, it is a ramp. The first fortnight still carries March’s manners; the last week is already rehearsing May. If your dates can flex, this is the most useful table on the page.

Will it rain on your April desert safari?

Almost certainly not. April averages about 5 mm of rain across roughly one day in the entire month, the closing act of the spring showers; March sees around 13 mm over about three days. If a shower does land on your date, the safari runs. Light desert rain stops nothing.

Rain here rarely arrives as a downpour. It comes as a short band with a temperature drop and a smell you do not forget, and our drivers reset their lines afterwards, because damp sand is firmer. The bonus: evenings after a shower are usually the clearest of the month, haze washed out and horizons running forever.

Morning or evening safari in April?

Evening, for the great majority. It carries the full camp programme, starts from AED 35 per person, and April’s late sunsets stretch its best hour longer than any earlier month. The private morning safari at AED 799 per car is the specialist’s choice.

Why April’s morning is a choice, not an escape

In June or August a dawn start is a survival tactic. In April it is a preference. Planning an April safari: crowds, calendar and quiet weeks

April is a calm month to plan around. No fixed event on the desert calendar lands in it: National Day, the Grand Prix weekend and the Liwa festival all sit in the winter block. No festival traffic, no holiday surge, no need to book months ahead.

Peak tourist season is winding down by April while the weather is still excellent. That is April’s quiet advantage: peak-season quality of evening, shoulder-season space at camp. Weekends fill faster than weekdays, so give a few days’ notice for hotel pickup.

One calendar caveat. The Islamic calendar runs 354 to 355 days, so its holy month shifts ten to eleven days earlier each year and overlaps April only in some years. When it does, safaris keep running: dinner aligns with the after-sunset schedule, some music acts may be limited, and the Tanoura and fire shows generally continue.

Sea by day, dunes by night: April’s combine-day advantage

April is the first month when the Gulf is properly swimmable and the desert is still comfortable after dark. Sea temperature reaches 25.2°C, up from February’s annual low of 21.1°C, and the safari does not collect you until 3:00–3:30 PM. The whole morning is yours.

That window is short. By August the sea reaches 33.8°C, more bath than swim for many, and the heat by then rules out a beach morning. April threads the needle: beach until midday, lunch and a shower, pickup at 3:00 PM. Bring a change of clothes, because damp swimwear and dune sand do not mix.

Is April a dust or sandstorm month in Abu Dhabi?

No, and this is one of the myths we correct most often. There is no spring sandstorm season here. Dusty, windy shamal spells belong mostly to early summer, roughly June to mid-August, with brief blows in winter, and April sits between the two. Add 53 per cent average humidity, second-lowest of the twelve months, and the air is clear far more often than not. On a rare breezy evening the effect is softer dune lines and hazier photographs, not a cancelled safari.

April versus March and May: which shoulder month wins?

April is quietly one of the strongest photographic months on these dunes. Sunset at 6:39–6:51 PM gives a long, low golden hour, humidity near 53 per cent keeps the air clean, and the dust season has not started, so distant crests hold their edges.

The hour before sunset is the money window: side-lit ripples, long shadows down the slip faces, the 100-metre crests lit while the bowls fall into shade. Then hold your nerve, because blue hour after 6:51 PM is short but exceptional.
