1Take a desert safari

The most distinctive thing Dubai offers, and the one we would put first without hesitation. Towers exist in many cities; rolling dunes forty minutes from a metro station do not. An evening desert safari gives you dune bashing in a prepared 4×4, sandboarding, a camel ride, a golden-hour photography stop in the sand, henna and Arabic costumes, live belly dance, LED Tanoura and fire shows, and a full BBQ buffet dinner under the stars. Add quad biking or a Can-Am dune buggy for more adrenaline.

2See the Burj Khalifa

828 metres, the tallest building in the world. The critical tip: photograph it from across the Dubai Fountain lake, not from the base — at the base you physically cannot fit it in frame. Going up (At The Top, Levels 124/125) is a separate expensive ticket that eats ~90 minutes with queuing. Worth doing once, and worth booking a sunset slot specifically. If money or time is tight, the free view is the better photograph.

3Cross Dubai Creek on an abra

A wooden water taxi across the Creek. It is not a tourist attraction — it is working public transport carrying traders and commuters, which is exactly why it is wonderful. Five minutes, almost free, and guests name it their favourite moment more often than anything with a ticket price. Shoot backwards at the Deira skyline from the water while crossing — everyone else faces forward, and it is the best photograph you will take in Dubai.

4Walk the Al Fahidi Historical District

Dubai’s oldest surviving neighbourhood — coral-and-gypsum courtyard houses built in the late 1800s by Persian merchants from Bastak. The rooftop towers are barjeel: wind towers, the original air conditioning. Step into a courtyard and the temperature genuinely drops several degrees, with no electricity involved. Shaded, quiet, and the best photography in Dubai in the morning light.

5Browse the Gold and Spice Souks

The Gold Souk in Deira holds one of the largest concentrations of gold on earth in a few hundred metres of covered lane. Gold is priced from the daily international rate by weight and purity — identical in every shop — so what you negotiate is the making charge, the labour cost. The Spice Souk next door smells of saffron, cardamom, frankincense and dried limes.

6Watch the Dubai Fountain

Outside Dubai Mall, against the lit Burj Khalifa. It is genuinely spectacular, it costs nothing, and it is the right way to end a day. Do not pay for a “premium viewing” package — the public view is excellent.

7Photograph the Burj Al Arab

The sail-shaped hotel that put Dubai on the world’s mental map. The classic shot is from the beach with sand in the foreground. Late-afternoon light is dramatically better than midday. You do not need to go inside.

8Drive Palm Jumeirah to Atlantis

The world’s most famous artificial island. Driving the trunk out to Atlantis The Palm at its crown is strange in the best way — you are on land that did not exist thirty years ago. Atlantis The Royal alongside it is the newer, more dramatic building.

9See Dubai Marina at golden hour

A forest of towers around a man-made canal, with The Beach at JBR alongside. Schedule it last, always. The Marina at sunset and the Marina at midday are effectively two different places, and anyone advising you to do it in the morning has not photographed it.

10Visit the Dubai Frame

A 150-metre golden picture frame in Zabeel Park, positioned so old Dubai sits on one side and new Dubai on the other. Modest ticket price, quick, and the view delivers on the idea. The best-value paid attraction in Dubai — the ticket we recommend most often.

11Explore Dubai Mall

More than shopping: the enormous aquarium panel, an ice rink, a waterfall, and the fountain outside. It is also the right place to be in the hottest part of the day, which makes it a genuinely useful indoor thing to do in summer.

12Photograph the Museum of the Future

The silver, calligraphy-wrapped torus on Sheikh Zayed Road — the most photogenic building Dubai has built this decade. Inside is an experience rather than a museum, and tickets sell out well ahead. Be honest with yourself about time: on a short trip the exterior photograph is most of the appeal.

13Visit Al Fahidi Fort and the Dubai Museum

Built in 1787 — the oldest building in Dubai. Worth pausing on that date: when this fort was new, Dubai was a pearling village of a few thousand people. Everything else on this list was built within a living memory of it. Entry is a separate, inexpensive ticket.

14See Jumeirah Mosque

One of the very few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslim visitors, and the most elegant piece of traditional architecture in the city. Free to photograph from outside; organised visits are available inside.

15Wander Al Seef and the Textile Souk

Al Seef is a heritage-style waterfront along the Creek — not historic, and we will not pretend it is, but genuinely pleasant and a good place for coffee. The Textile Souk in Bur Dubai is a covered lane of silks, cottons and pashminas sold by the metre, sitting neatly between the abra station and Al Fahidi.

Free Things to Do in Dubai

Dubai has a reputation for being expensive. Hotels and restaurants can be — but the city itself is not, and this is the single most useful thing on the page.

That is ten genuinely excellent things to do in Dubai for essentially nothing. Add the Dubai Frame’s modest ticket and you have a full, superb day for the price of one coffee and a boat fare.

Things to Do in Dubai With Kids

The things children actually enjoy are rarely the ones the brochures push, so here is what works.

What genuinely lands

• The abra crossing. A boat, on water, for a dirham. Wins every single time.
• The Dubai Aquarium panel inside Dubai Mall — free, enormous, and mesmerising.
• The Dubai Fountain — free, loud, and dramatic after dark.
• Palm Jumeirah — children find the idea of a man-made island genuinely strange, in a good way.
• A desert safari. Dune bashing, camel rides and sandboarding are the highlight of most family trips. Gentler dune routes are available on request.
• JBR Beach — free, and sometimes a morning on the sand beats another landmark.

What to be realistic about

The Gold Souk bores younger children and delights teenagers. An eight-hour sightseeing day in summer is too much for a small child — take a 4-hour tour, go back to the hotel, come out again in the evening. And a hop-on hop-off bus with a tired toddler and a 40-minute wait for the next bus is a genuinely miserable combination.

Because our tours are priced per car, children add nothing to the cost, and a private vehicle means you can cut any stop short the moment the mood turns. That flexibility is worth more with children than anything else you can buy.

Indoor Things to Do in Dubai (and What to Do in Summer)

From roughly May to September, Dubai’s daytime temperatures sit in the forties. The mistake is cancelling your plans. The fix is restructuring the day, because Dubai is built for exactly this.

The summer rule

Outdoors early. Indoors midday. Outdoors again in the evening. Do old Dubai at 9:00 AM, when the Al Fahidi lanes are shaded, the wind towers are working and the souks are covered. Spend the punishing middle of the day inside. Come back out after sunset, when the city genuinely comes alive.

Indoor things to do in Dubai

• Dubai Mall — the free aquarium panel, the ice rink, the waterfall. Hours will disappear here without you minding.
• The Museum of the Future — fully indoor and air-conditioned. Book ahead; it sells out.
• The Dubai Frame — the interior and the viewing deck are enclosed. Quick, cheap, excellent.
• Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort — the underground galleries are cool in both senses.
• Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai — an indoor ski slope in the desert. A novelty, but a genuinely welcome one in July.
• The souks — worth knowing that the Gold and Spice Souks are covered, so they work far better in summer than people assume.

The best summer evening in Dubai

An evening desert safari. Once the sun drops the desert cools quickly, the dune bashing is at its best in the low light, and dinner under the stars in July is genuinely pleasant. Summer is also the quieter, cheaper season for safaris. If you are visiting Dubai between May and September, this is the single thing we would tell you not to miss.

Things to Do in Dubai for Couples

The romantic version of Dubai is not the one on the billboards, and the expensive options are rarely the best ones.

• Golden hour at Dubai Marina, then dinner on the water at JBR. Free, and better than most paid “experiences”.
• A private desert safari — luxury or overnight — with a sunset photography stop in the dunes and dinner under the stars. This is the one most couples remember.
• The Dubai Fountain after dark from the Souk Al Bahar bridge. Free.
• An abra at dusk, with the Creek lit and the old city on both banks. A couple of dirhams.
• Al Fahidi in the early morning, empty and shaded, coffee in a courtyard café.
• A private evening city tour — the whole car to yourselves, no fixed schedule, and Dubai lit up. Same price as daytime.

Cheap Things to Do in Dubai

If the budget is tight, Dubai is far kinder than its reputation suggests. A genuinely excellent day, costing almost nothing:

The Metro reaches much of this for a few dirhams. What it does not reach is the Al Fahidi lanes, the Umm Suqeim viewpoint or Atlantis — which is the honest limitation of doing Dubai cheaply, and the reason a car matters more here than in most cities.

Things We Would Skip

An honest guide has to say what is not worth your time. This is not criticism of anyone who enjoys these — it is simply what we would tell a friend with limited hours.

The Dubai Aquarium tunnel. The giant panel is free from inside the mall. Unless you specifically want to walk through the tunnel, you are paying to see something you can already see.

Premium Dubai Fountain viewing. The shows are free and the public view is excellent.

Ski Dubai, on a first short visit. A fine novelty, but it eats half a day and it is the one thing here you could do in fifty other countries. In summer, though, it earns its place.

Global Village and the big theme parks, if you have under three days. Each will consume an entire day and crowd out everything else.

“Copy” watches and bags in the souks. You will be approached. A polite, firm no is enough and will be respected.

Adding Abu Dhabi to a short Dubai trip. It is 90 minutes each way. Two rushed cities are worse than one seen properly.

How to Fit It All In

Dubai’s attractions span roughly 40 kilometres, and this — not ticket prices — is what actually ruins people’s trips. The fix is one rule.

Move east to west across the day. Old Dubai in the morning (it is walked outdoors, so do it while cool). Downtown and the malls at midday (indoors, air-conditioned, and the hottest hours). The coast — Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina — in the last hour of daylight, because golden hour there is not a nice-to-have, it is the entire difference.

Do that and you never double back, you never fight Sheikh Zayed Road at rush hour, and you get the best light on the best views for free. Almost everyone who has a bad day in Dubai got this backwards. The full hour-by-hour version is on our One Day in Dubai page.

Getting Around

If you are travelling solo, the Metro plus a bus pass is genuinely cheaper, and we will say so. From three people upward a private car costs less and gives you far more.

Things to Do in Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall is the most-visited building on earth, and most guides treat it as a shopping list. It is far more useful than that — and a great deal of it is free.

• The Dubai Aquarium viewing panel. Visible from inside the mall at no cost — a 51-metre-wide window into the tank, with rays and sharks. The paid tunnel and underwater zoo are good rather than essential.
• The Dubai Fountain, outside on the lake. Free shows on the hour after dark, against the lit Burj Khalifa. Watch from the Souk Al Bahar bridge.
• The Burj Khalifa view from the fountain terrace — the single best free photograph in Dubai.
• The waterfall and the ice rink, both free to look at.
• Air conditioning. Not a joke. In July, the mall is the reason a midday plan survives.

Practically, Dubai Mall is where we would put the hottest two hours of any summer day. You can spend them productively, spend nothing, and step outside into the golden hour afterwards.

How Long Do You Need?

If you only have two days, do not spread the city thinner across both. Do the city properly in one and give the second to the desert. It is the combination guests thank us for most often.
