Formula Rossa — the fastest rollercoaster in the world

This is why you are here, and it deserves the billing.

Formula Rossa accelerates from 0 to 240 km/h in approximately 4.9 seconds. The launch is hydraulic, and the system is derived from the catapults used to launch aircraft from carrier decks. It reaches roughly 52 metres at its highest point, and the track layout is modelled on the Monza circuit — the ride is meant to approximate what an F1 car does on a lap, and it is the closest most people will ever come.

The goggles are not a gimmick

What it actually feels like

The launch is the whole ride. There is no slow lift hill, no clanking chain — you sit, the restraints close, and then you are simply gone. Most people describe it as the acceleration removing the ability to think for about four seconds. After the launch the coaster is smooth and relatively gentle; the top speed is over almost immediately.

If you have ridden fast coasters before, this is a different category. If you have not, be honest with yourself in the queue — it is entirely acceptable to walk out.

The other rides that matter

Flying Aces

Built around the story of Francesco Baracca, the Italian flying ace whose prancing horse emblem became the Ferrari logo. It has one of the steepest non-inverted rollercoaster drops in the world and the tallest loop of any coaster. If Formula Rossa is about raw speed, Flying Aces is about height and hang-time — and a lot of people find it the more frightening of the two.

Turbo Track

A vertical launch that fires you through the roof of the building and drops you back down inside it. It is short, and it is genuinely disorienting.

Mission Ferrari

The park’s newer flagship — a multi-sensory dark-ride/coaster hybrid. Less about speed, more about spectacle.

Fiorano GT Challenge

A duelling coaster: two trains race each other around the circuit. Good fun, far less intense than the headliners.

Galleria Ferrari and Made in Maranello

The calm centre of the park. Galleria Ferrari is a collection of historic and current Ferraris; Made in Maranello is a simulated tour of the engine plant. If you came with someone who will not ride anything, this is where they will happily spend an hour — and honestly, so will you.

Junior GT and Bell’Italia — the children’s side

Junior GT is a driving school where small children take a scaled Ferrari around a circuit and are issued a licence at the end. Bell’Italia is a slow ride through a miniature Italy in scaled Ferrari Spiders.

Here is the honest bit: Bell’Italia is the ride most parents remember more fondly than any of the coasters. It is gentle, it is beautiful, and it is the part of the park that is genuinely charming rather than merely fast.

Ferrari World tickets and price

A standard day ticket costs roughly AED 310–345, depending on the seller, the day, and whatever promotion is running. Fast-track passes and multi-park (Yas Island) passes cost more.

How it compares

That is the honest context. Ferrari World is a serious spend for a family — roughly ten times a Louvre visit and twenty times Qasr Al Watan. It is worth it if you ride things. It is very poor value if you are going to walk around and take photographs.

How long do you need at Ferrari World?

4 to 5 hours is the realistic number, and most people budget two. The park is bigger than it looks from the road, and the queues are the variable — see below.

Ferrari World with children

Yes, it works — but be clear-eyed about which rides they can actually go on.

Formula Rossa, Flying Aces and Turbo Track all carry height restrictions and are genuinely intense — some adults regret them. Check the official Ferrari World website for the current height limits before you travel; they are the only reliable source and we are not going to print numbers that might have changed.

But the park is deliberately built in two halves, and the children’s side is substantial:

• Junior GT — a driving school where small children drive scaled Ferraris around a circuit and get a licence.
• Bell’Italia — a slow ride through a miniature Italy in scaled Ferrari Spiders. The one parents remember.
• Benno’s Great Race — gentle, family-friendly.
• Galleria Ferrari — cars to look at, nothing to be frightened of.

Honest steer: if your children are under ten, Warner Bros. World (AED 475, also on Yas Island, also fully indoor) will hold them longer and give them more to do. Ferrari World is at its best with teenagers and adults who will ride the big three.

The summer argument — and it is the strongest one

From June to September, Abu Dhabi routinely exceeds 42°C, and humidity can push the felt temperature past 50°C. Outdoor sightseeing in that is not a holiday; it is an endurance event.

Ferrari World is almost entirely indoors and fully air-conditioned, under a red roof covering roughly 200,000 square metres — and it is open 365 days a year.

That makes it one of a very small number of things in Abu Dhabi that work perfectly well in August. If you are visiting in high summer with a family, an indoor theme park is not an indulgence — it is the day that saves the trip. The alternative is standing on the Corniche at 45°C wondering why you came.

Do the outdoor sights early (mosque at 09:00, free), and spend the brutal middle of the day inside the park. That is the summer itinerary, and it is the one we would book for our own families.

Beating the queues

Queue length is the single biggest variable in how good your day is, and almost nobody plans for it.

• Arrive at opening and go straight to Formula Rossa. The queue builds through the morning.
• Ride the headliners first, do Galleria Ferrari and the calm attractions in the afternoon when the queues are worst.
• Check the ride-status page on the official site before you go — individual rides close for maintenance, and Formula Rossa being down is the difference between a great day and a wasted ticket.
• Fast-track passes exist and cost more. On a public holiday they are arguably worth it; on a quiet Tuesday they are not.

The rest of Yas Island

Ferrari World is one building on an island that holds several, and if you are making the 30 km trip it is worth knowing what else is within five minutes.

Do not try to do two parks in one day. Ferrari World needs 4–5 hours; Warner Bros. World needs a full day with children. Attempting both produces two rushed, expensive, half-experienced visits.

How to get to Ferrari World

Ferrari World is on Yas Island. Abu Dhabi is not walkable, and Yas is well outside the city centre.

Note the airport is closer to Yas Island than the city is — about fifteen minutes. If you have a long layover and want a theme park rather than a mosque, Ferrari World is genuinely reachable.

Your options

• Taxi — fine, and the right choice for one or two people.
• Hire car — Yas Island has extensive parking.
• Private car with driver — AED 699 for the whole vehicle (up to 6 guests). We drop you at the entrance and wait — which matters, because you cannot predict to the minute when you will come out of a theme park.

Is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi worth it?

It depends entirely on whether you will ride things, and we will give you the honest answer rather than the profitable one.

The blunt version: at roughly AED 1,380 for a family of four, Ferrari World is one of the most expensive things you can do in Abu Dhabi. If your group will ride the big three, it is money well spent and the memory will outlast the trip. If you are going to walk around photographing red cars, you are paying theme-park prices for a museum — and Galleria Ferrari, good as it is, is not worth AED 345 on its own.

Five mistakes visitors make at Ferrari World

1. Allowing two hours

You need 4–5. The park is bigger than it looks and the queues are real.

2. Going on a UAE public holiday

Formula Rossa can exceed an hour’s wait. If your dates are flexible, move them.

3. Not checking the ride-status page

Individual rides close for maintenance. Formula Rossa being down turns a AED 345 ticket into a disappointment. Check the official site the morning you go.

4. Buying a bundled ticket from a tour operator

They buy at trade rate and resell at a margin. Buy your own. We take no commission and neither should anyone else without telling you.

5. Taking under-tens for the coasters

They will not meet the height restrictions for the big three. Warner Bros. World is the better park for that age, and it is five minutes away.
