The best thing to do in Abu Dhabi is free

We want to lead with this, because it is the single most useful fact on the page and the tourism industry works hard to obscure it.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque costs nothing. No entry fee. No ticket. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates, it holds more than 40,000 worshippers, it has 82 domes, 1,096 columns, four 107-metre minarets, the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627 m², woven by roughly 1,200 artisans) and seven Swarovski-crystal chandeliers — and you can walk into all of it for free.

Everything the mosque gives you for nothing

• Free entry — you register a free visitor access pass in advance
• A free 45-minute guided cultural tour, in Arabic and English, delivered by the mosque’s own Cultural Tour Specialists (typically 11:00, 13:00 and 17:00)
• A free multimedia e-guide if you prefer to go at your own pace
• Free parking
• Free abaya loan for women who arrive uncovered
• Free photography throughout, except during prayer times

Dress code, briefly: women need hair covered and ankle-to-wrist coverage; men need long trousers and sleeves; children under puberty are exempt. Bring your own scarf — the free abaya queue can cost you forty minutes in peak season. Arrive by 09:00, before the crowds build.

What is NOT free — and the lists that get it wrong

We are including this because during our research for this page we found published lists, including a widely-shared social post, describing Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre Abu Dhabi as free things to do in Abu Dhabi. They are not, and turning up expecting free entry is a bad way to start a day.

Prices verified against public attraction listings in July and subject to change — check before you travel. We sell none of these tickets and earn nothing from any of them, which is precisely why we can tell you plainly which are which.

Free landmarks in Abu Dhabi

Emirates Palace

Opened in 2005 at a reported US$3 billion, with 114 domes, 85 hectares of grounds and roughly 8,000 m² of gold leaf worked into the interior. Most people assume you must be a guest. You do not. The public areas — the lobby, the corridors, the cafés — are open to visitors, and walking in costs nothing. The famous gold-flake cappuccino does cost money, and you are under no obligation to buy one.

Etihad Towers

Five towers, the tallest reaching 305 metres across 74 floors, and the backdrop to a famous car-jump sequence in Furious 7. Photographing them from the Corniche is free. Going up is not — the Observation Deck at 300 on the 74th floor charges an AED 95 minimum spend, redeemable against food and drink.

Wahat Al Karama

The memorial to Emirati servicemen who have died in service, directly opposite the Grand Mosque. Thirty-one leaning aluminium tablets support one another — the design is a statement about unity. It is free, it is quiet, and almost every visitor to the mosque drives straight past it without stopping.

The Founder’s Memorial

A 30-metre cube called The Constellation, made of 1,327 geometric shapes suspended on cables, which resolve into a portrait of Sheikh Zayed when viewed from the right angle. Free, and genuinely clever.

Al Ittihad Square

Giant sculptures of Emirati cultural objects — a coffee pot, a cannon, a perfume bottle, a fort. Free, photogenic, and a favourite with children.

Free beaches and outdoor spaces

Corniche Beach

The Abu Dhabi Corniche runs eight kilometres along the waterfront and includes a Blue Flag public beach — an international certification for water quality, safety and environmental management. There are free public sections with lifeguards and showers; some managed sections charge a small fee for facilities. The promenade itself, the cycling lanes and the parks are all free.

Hudayriyat Island

One of the newest free things to do in Abu Dhabi and still missing from most lists. Free cycling and running tracks, a large skate park, a beach and outdoor gyms. It is where the city goes at weekends, and it costs nothing.

Saadiyat public beach

Free public-access sections on a genuinely beautiful natural beach. Hawksbill turtles nest here — a protected species — so parts are seasonally restricted, and rightly so.

Mangrove Marine National Park

Protected mangrove wetlands with abundant birdlife, right on the edge of the city. Free to visit and walk. Guided kayak tours cost extra, and are worth it — but you can see the mangroves for nothing. (Note: Jubail Mangrove Park, with its boardwalks, charges AED 20.)

Masdar City

A pioneering low-carbon urban development — wind towers, shaded streets designed for passive cooling, driverless pods. It is free to walk around and it is unlike anywhere else in the UAE. An architecture nerd could spend two happy hours here for nothing.

Free culture and heritage

Heritage Village

A reconstruction of a pre-oil Emirati settlement, on the breakwater, with the modern skyline directly behind it across the water. Inside there is a working souq where craftspeople demonstrate metalwork, pottery, weaving and glass-blowing, a small museum of Bedouin life, and a replica falaj irrigation channel. Free.

That contrast — a mud-brick village with a wind tower in front, and a wall of glass towers behind — is the single most useful photograph in Abu Dhabi for understanding what happened to this country in fifty years. Most tours skip it. Do not.

Al Bateen Dhow Yard

Traditional wooden dhows still being built by hand, using techniques that predate the oil. Free to watch, and completely unstaged — this is a working yard, not an exhibit.

Central Market / World Trade Center Souk

A modern reinterpretation of a traditional souk by Norman Foster’s practice. Free to browse, air-conditioned, and a reasonable place to buy things that are not tourist tat.

Al Jahili Fort and Al Ain Oasis

Both free, and both about 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city in Al Ain. Al Ain Oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing roughly 147,000 date palms and a working falaj irrigation system that is thousands of years old. Al Jahili Fort is one of the largest historic forts in the UAE. If you have a car and a spare day, this is the best free day trip in the emirate — and virtually no tourist does it.

The newest free attractions (that most lists have missed)

The Abrahamic Family House

One of the newest free attractions on Saadiyat Island: a mosque, a church and a synagogue standing side by side, three identical cubes in a shared garden, designed by David Adjaye as a space for interfaith coexistence. Entry is free.

It is one of the most significant new buildings in the UAE and it is still absent from most “free things to do in Abu Dhabi” lists — including several ranking on the first page of Google. Go now, while it is quiet.

Yas Bay Waterfront

Free to walk, with views across the marina and the F1 circuit. Restaurants and a concert arena, but the waterfront itself costs nothing.

Sheikh Zayed Festival (seasonal)

Typically November to March. Free entry, with fireworks, cultural pavilions, heritage displays and food. If your visit falls in the cooler months, check whether it is running — it is one of the best free evenings in the emirate.

A completely free day in Abu Dhabi — the plan

Entry cost for this entire day: AED 0. You will spend money on food and transport, and nothing else.

Ten stops. Zero dirhams in entry fees. That is a better day than most people have in Abu Dhabi paying AED 400 a head for theme parks — and we are a tour company telling you this.

Free things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids

• Corniche Beach — free public sections, Blue Flag certified, lifeguards, showers, shade.
• Hudayriyat Island — free skate park, cycle tracks, beach. Teenagers love it.
• Al Ittihad Square — giant sculptures of a coffee pot and a cannon. Small children find this far more entertaining than any museum.
• Heritage Village — craftspeople actually working. Free, and short enough to hold attention.
• The malls — Marina Mall, Yas Mall. Free entry, free air conditioning. In August this is not a joke, it is a strategy.
• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — free, and children under puberty are exempt from the dress code. The courtyard is enormous and echoes; they enjoy it more than you expect.

Nearly free: Umm Al Emarat Park at AED 10 is the best-value family afternoon in the city — playgrounds, shade, animals, and change from a twenty.

Free things to do in Abu Dhabi at night

Abu Dhabi after dark is better than Abu Dhabi at midday, it is cooler, and much of it is free.

• The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, illuminated — open until 20:30. The exterior lighting shifts through phases of white and blue in tune with the lunar cycle, and on white Macedonian marble the effect is extraordinary. Free, and arguably better than the daytime visit.
• The Corniche — the whole city comes out once the heat drops. Free.
• Al Ittihad Square and the Founder’s Memorial — both lit at night, both free.
• Yas Bay Waterfront — free to walk, lit, and lively.
• Sheikh Zayed Festival (Nov–Mar) — free entry, with fireworks.

We run night tours and almost nobody else does. The mosque lit up at 20:00, with an empty courtyard, is the best thing in the city and it costs nothing to enter.

Free things to do in Abu Dhabi in summer

From June to September Abu Dhabi regularly exceeds 42°C, with humidity pushing the felt temperature past 50°C. Most free attractions here are outdoors, which is a problem — so the summer strategy is different.

The summer rule: outdoor free things before 10:00 and after 18:00; indoor free things in between. And move between them in an air-conditioned vehicle — an open-top bus or a walk between stops in July is genuinely dangerous, not just uncomfortable.

The catch: free attractions, 30 km apart

Your options, ranked honestly for a budget traveller

• Taxis — the right answer for one or two people. Plentiful and metered. Across a ten-stop day the fares add up, but they will still cost you less than any tour.
• Public buses — cheapest of all, and genuinely usable between the main areas, though slow and not designed around tourist stops.
• Hop-on hop-off bus — ~AED 275 per person for 24 hours. Only worth it if you are 1–2 people and staying multiple days. See our bus vs private car comparison.
• A private car — AED 699 for the whole vehicle (up to 6 guests). From three people up, this generally works out cheaper than the taxi fares across a full day.

Why we wrote a page that talks you out of booking

Because the alternative is worse. The Abu Dhabi tourism industry is full of operators charging for “mosque entry” that is free, reselling attraction tickets at a markup, and publishing “free things to do” lists with paid attractions on them.
