Quick answer: the Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 and costs AED 3 to AED 7.50 on a Silver nol card depending on zones. A taxi from the rank starts at AED 20 and runs on the meter. Our fixed private car is AED 799 for the whole vehicle.
If you have hand luggage, arrive in Metro hours and are going somewhere on the Red Line, take the Metro. It is the cheapest and often the fastest option in traffic, and we will not pretend otherwise. Three specific things rule it out, and they are covered below.

The Metro from DXB — official detail
From Dubai Airports’ own transport page, read on 12 August: the Metro Red Line serves DXB Terminals 1 and 3. Nol cards are sold at ticket offices and vending machines in both terminals, in Gold and Silver types.
Terminal 2 has no Metro station. If you land at T2, this option is not available to you without first getting to another terminal, and that is not a short walk.

Read that Sunday row twice. The Metro does not open until 8 AM on Sundays. A great many people land at DXB early on a Sunday morning, walk to the station and find it shut. That single line is the most useful thing on this page and almost nobody publishes it.
What the Metro actually costs
Fares are by zone, not by distance, and they come from the RTA’s own nol fares page read on 12 August. A visitor buying a card at the airport normally ends up with a Silver nol or a Red ticket.

Passes exist if you are staying a while: a Silver 7-day pass is AED 50 for one zone, AED 80 for two and AED 110 for all zones. Children aged 5 and under travel free. Students, seniors and Emirati citizens get 50 per cent off on Personal cards. Gold class costs a surcharge on top, for a quieter front carriage.
So a couple going from DXB to Downtown on Silver cards is spending single-digit dirhams each. That is the number our AED 799 is competing against, and we are not going to hide it.
Where you are going decides more than how much you have
The Red Line runs from the airport through Deira, Downtown, Business Bay, along Sheikh Zayed Road and out to the Marina and Jebel Ali. If your hotel is near that line, the Metro is genuinely excellent. If it is not, you will be taking a taxi at the far end anyway, with your bags, at the point when you are most tired.
- Downtown, Business Bay, DIFC, Deira: on the Red Line. Metro works well.
- Dubai Marina, JBR, Media City: on the Red Line, but a long ride from the airport. Fine with light bags, tedious with cases.
- Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah beach hotels, Al Barsha villas, Hatta: not on the Red Line. Metro plus a taxi, or just take the car.
- Anywhere at all with three or more people: the per-head maths turns quickly. See below.
When the Metro is the wrong choice
Three situations, and only three. Outside them, take the train.
- Your flight lands outside Metro hours, which on a Sunday means before 8 AM, and on other days before 5 AM or after midnight.
- You have real luggage. Two large cases and a pushchair through a station, onto a train and out at the far end is not the arrival you want after a long flight.
- Your destination is not near the Red Line, or you are a group of four or more, at which point one car beats four tickets plus a taxi at the end.

Salik tolls, parking, fuel, the meet in arrivals and the waiting are inside that price. No deposit, and you pay the driver. USD is converted at the pegged rate of 3.6725 and rounded.
Being blunt about the comparison: two people with cabin bags going to Downtown will pay about AED 6 on the Metro against our AED 799. That is not a close call and we are not going to dress it up. Our price is for the arrival where the Metro does not fit — a family with cases at 4 AM, a group of six, a first visit where somebody holding your name in arrivals is worth paying for, or a trip somebody else is expensing and needs a fixed figure for.

The starting fare is AED 20 for a saloon and the meter runs from there. Nobody can quote you a reliable total in advance because the RTA does not publish a per-kilometre rate on its public fare page.
Which Dubai hotels are near the Metro Red Line?
Downtown, Business Bay, DIFC and Deira are all well served. Dubai Marina, JBR and Media City are on the line but a long ride from the airport. Palm Jumeirah, the Jumeirah beach hotels and Al Barsha are not on the Red Line.

What is the cheapest way to get from Dubai airport to Downtown Dubai?
The metro, and if you are travelling light you should not buy a transfer from us or from anyone else for this leg. A silver nol card charges AED 3, AED 5 or AED 7.50 depending on how many zones you cross (rta.ae, read 17 August), and the Red Line reaches Downtown from Terminals 1 and 3 without changing line (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). How much is a taxi from Dubai airport to Downtown Dubai?
Nobody can quote you a final figure honestly, because Dubai taxis run on a meter. The regulator lists an airport taxi start of AED 20, an airport van at AED 25, and street hail from AED 5 by day and AED 5.50 overnight (rta.ae, read 17 August). The airport’s own transport page says the starting fare is AED 25 (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August), and u.ae lists an AED 8 Dubai daytime start (u.ae, read 17 August). Where they disagree we trust rta.ae, because the Dubai regulator sets the tariff.
Is there a direct metro from Dubai airport to Burj Khalifa?
Yes, and it is the one genuinely direct link on this route. The Red Line serves R13 Airport Terminal 3 and R14 Airport Terminal 1, and station R25 is named Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall (rta.ae, read 17 August). Dubai Airports confirms the Red Line connects Terminals 1 and 3 (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). You board inside the terminal, stay on the same line and step off in Downtown with no interchange and no traffic. Buy or top up a nol card before the gates.
How long does the journey from Dubai airport to Downtown Dubai take?
No official source publishes a door-to-door time, so treat the confident figures you see quoted elsewhere as estimates rather than facts. RTA points travellers to its journey planner and the s’hail application for live routing (rta.ae, read 17 August), which is the honest answer. The metro is the predictable option because it runs on its own alignment, while road time swings with congestion. If you have a fixed hotel check-in or a dinner booking, plan around the metro and treat any road estimate as optimistic.
Which metro station is closest to Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall?
Station R25 on the Red Line is named Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall (rta.ae, read 17 August), which is the stop you want for the tower, the mall and the fountain promenade. The Dubai Mall’s own visitor page lists metro, bus, car, taxi and a mall coach among the ways in (thedubaimall.com, read 17 August). We will not invent a walking distance, because neither source publishes one. Allow more time than a map suggests and follow the signed link from the station rather than walking at street level.
Can I take the metro from Terminal 2?
No. RTA’s station map lists only R13 Airport Terminal 3 and R14 Airport Terminal 1 on the Red Line (rta.ae, read 17 August), and Dubai Airports describes the Red Line as connecting Terminals 1 and 3 (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Terminal 2 has no station of its own, so from there it is a taxi or a bus. Buses do run from dedicated stands at Arrivals in Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and cash is not accepted, so buy a nol card before you queue (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August).
How much luggage can I take on the Dubai Metro?
Dubai Airports states that travellers may bring up to two pieces of luggage, including hand luggage, and points to the RTA site for the size and weight limits (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). We could not confirm exact dimensions from an official page today, so we will not quote any. In practice a cabin bag and one case per person is the sensible reading. If your group is carrying more than that between you, the metro stops being the easy option and the taxi rank is the better call.
Do I need a nol card, and where do I buy one?
You need one for buses, where a nol card is required because cash payments are not accepted (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Cards are sold and topped up at ticket offices and machines in the terminals, at metro stations and at selected bus stations, in silver and gold versions (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Silver fares are AED 3, AED 5 or AED 7.50 according to the zones you cross (rta.ae, read 17 August). The same card also covers Dubai Creek abra crossings at AED 1 to AED 2.
What time does the Dubai Metro stop running at night?
The Red Line runs 05:00 to midnight Monday to Thursday and on Saturday, 05:00 to 01:00 on Friday, and 08:00 to midnight on Sunday (rta.ae, read 17 August), and the airport’s own transport page gives the same pattern (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Two independent official sources agreeing is worth more than any travel blog. If you land after the last train or before the Sunday start, the metro is simply not available and you are taking a taxi from the rank, which is staffed around the clock.
Where do ride-hailing cars pick up at Dubai airport?
App-based ride-hailing operates at the airport and you follow the clearly marked signage to a designated pickup point rather than meeting a car at the kerb (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Dubai Airports also states there are no pick-up areas at Arrivals, so a friend cannot simply pull up outside for you. Regulated e-hail fares start at AED 9 off peak, AED 13 at peak and AED 10 overnight, against AED 20 for an airport taxi from the rank (rta.ae, read 17 August). The rank is usually simpler.
Is the bus from Dubai airport to Downtown Dubai worth taking?
Only if money matters more to you than an hour of your evening. Buses leave from dedicated stands at Arrivals in all three terminals and need a nol card, since cash is not accepted (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August), and reaching Downtown normally involves a change. They are built for accessibility with dedicated seating and boarding areas, and a People of Determination taxi starts at AED 8 by day and AED 9 at night (rta.ae, read 17 August). Are tolls and surcharges added to my airport taxi fare?
Yes, and this is where the official sources fall out with each other. u.ae states that a Dubai toll crossing adds AED 4 to a taxi fare and that trips to the Northern Emirates carry an AED 20 surcharge (u.ae, read 17 August). The same page lists a Dubai daytime start of AED 8 and an Abu Dhabi start of AED 3.50, which contradicts the regulators, since Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes AED 1.82 per kilometre with an AED 12 minimum trip fare (admobility.gov.ae, read 17 August). We trust the emirate regulators.
Where can I shower or leave my bags during a long layover at Dubai airport?
Showers in Terminal 3 at Gates A and B are free, which is the best thing about a long wait, and left luggage runs 24 hours at all three terminals (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Storage is AED 35 standard and AED 40 non-standard in Terminal 3, and AED 40 and AED 50 in Terminals 1 and 2 (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). If your layover is short, a free shower and a bag drop beats paying for a hotel room you will barely use.
Should I book a private transfer from Dubai airport to Downtown Dubai?
Honestly, not from us. We are a DCT-licensed Abu Dhabi operator that owns and built its own desert camp, and a short Dubai airport hop is not our work; the metro or the taxi rank will serve you better and cheaper. Where we do help is Abu Dhabi, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is free to enter with a pre-booked online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Is the Dubai Fountain show free to watch?
Yes. Emaar states the Dubai Fountain is free to watch from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August), so an evening in Downtown can cost you nothing beyond the metro fare that got you there. You may still meet a banner on the tower’s own site saying the fountain is closed for renovation; that notice is stale and we trust the current Emaar page over it. Paid viewing platforms exist, but for a first visit the promenade beside the mall is the honest recommendation.
