Is Dubai expensive? The short answer
Dubai is expensive to sleep in and cheap to move around. A tourist who takes the metro, eats where residents eat and skips the observation decks can run a comfortable day on about US$70 to US$100. The same day in a beach resort, drinking in hotel bars, costs US$400 and up.
That gap is the whole story, and it is why you will read “Dubai is unaffordable” and “Dubai is cheaper than Europe” in the same forum thread. Both people are telling the truth about completely different trips.
The rest of this page is the actual arithmetic: what a metro ride costs from the official fare table, what three realistic daily budgets buy, where our own prices sit, and the eleven things that quietly inflate a Dubai bill.
Is US$100 a day enough in Dubai?
Yes, comfortably, if the hotel is booked separately. US$100 covers transport, three meals, one paid attraction and a margin. It does not cover a room in a beach resort, and it does not survive a night of hotel-bar drinking.
Here is a realistic day at that budget, in dirhams because that is what you pay in, with US dollar estimates at the 3.6725 peg.

What three realistic budgets actually buy
Per person per day, excluding flights and excluding the hotel room, because the room is the single biggest variable and it swamps everything else.

The careful column is not a hardship trip. Dubai’s beaches, its souks, the creek and the fountain show are all free, and the metro is air-conditioned and excellent. It is entirely possible to have a very good week here without ever paying for a view.
How much does getting around Dubai cost?
Very little, and this is the part travellers consistently overestimate. A Silver Nol card journey within one zone is AED 3, two adjacent zones AED 5, three or more zones AED 7.5. Children five and under travel free. These are the official published fares, not estimates.

Taxis are metered and, by the standards of any large Western city, cheap. Where cost appears is the airport run and the long crossings — Marina to the airport at rush hour is a real fare. Why the hotel decides everything
The room is the budget. Everything else on this page put together is usually smaller than the difference between a Deira business hotel and a Palm Jumeirah resort for the same week.
Three structural things worth knowing before you book.
Location changes your daily spend, not just your nightly rate. A cheap hotel far from a metro station converts into two taxis a day, every day. Price the transport into the room.
There is a per-night municipality charge on hotel stays — the Tourism Dirham — which is levied per room per night and scales with the hotel’s star rating. It is usually collected at check-out and is not always visible in the online rate you compared. Season swings the rate more than anything you can control. Rooms are dearest from roughly November to March, when the weather is perfect, and cheapest in high summer. Our guide to the best time to visit Dubai covers the trade-off in full.
How much is a meal in Dubai?
From about AED 15 to AED 300 for the same hunger. Dubai has one of the widest food price ranges of any city, because it feeds a very large working population and a very small luxury one in the same square kilometre.
The tiers, and where residents actually eat:
- Cafeterias and Pakistani, Indian and Filipino canteens. A filling meal in the AED 15–30 band. These are all over Deira, Bur Dubai and Karama, they are busy, and the food is very good.
- Food courts and casual chains. Roughly AED 30–50 a head.
- Mid-range restaurants. Mains in the AED 40–100 band, per Full Suitcase, read 15 August. Soft drinks AED 15–18.
- Hotel restaurants. Where the reputation comes from. Easily AED 200–400 a head before drinks.
The single biggest food saving in Dubai is not eating less, it is eating where the residents eat. A city with a majority-expatriate population has extremely good cheap food, and almost none of it is in a hotel.
Alcohol is what makes Dubai look expensive
Because alcohol is only served in licensed venues, which are overwhelmingly hotels, a drink in Dubai is priced as a hotel drink. There is no cheap-bar tier to fall back on the way there is with food.
That single structural fact distorts almost every “Dubai is expensive” account you will read. Two people having three drinks each in a hotel bar can spend more in one evening than a careful traveller spends in three days.

What a desert safari costs, from the operator
This is the one section where we are quoting our own prices rather than reporting someone else’s. A desert safari from Dubai with us is AED 799 for a private car and AED 999 for a private Land Cruiser — that is the whole vehicle and the driver-guide, not a price per person.

Read the units, because this is exactly where desert safari pricing misleads people. AED 35 per person and AED 799 per car are not competing offers — one is a transport ticket to the camp, the other is a vehicle and a driver for the evening. Four people in the private car works out around AED 200 each; two people are better off on a shared seat and we will say so on the phone.

Paid attractions: the real budget killer
Dubai’s headline attractions are priced like theme parks, and stacking three of them into one trip will cost more than a week of everything else.
Reported ranges, from Full Suitcase, read 15 August: Burj Khalifa At The Top around EUR 35 per person, rising to about EUR 95 for the higher Sky level; Dubai Aquarium around EUR 35; Aquaventure waterpark AED 320 adult and AED 260 child; a marina dhow cruise around AED 420. Those are third-party figures, quoted as reported, and they change with season and booking channel.
Two honest observations from operating here. First, the observation decks sell a view of a city you can see for nothing from a dozen public places. Second, the attraction that visitors consistently rate highest at the end of a trip is the desert, not a building — and the desert is a fraction of the price of stacking decks and aquariums.

What costs nothing at all
A genuinely full day in Dubai, at zero admission cost:
- The Dubai Fountain — shows through the evening, free, and the best views are from the public promenade rather than a restaurant table.
- Public beaches — Jumeirah, JBR, Kite Beach. Free, clean, lifeguarded.
- The creek and the abra crossing — the wooden water taxi is one of the cheapest and best things in the city.
- The gold and spice souks — free to walk, and the best photographs in Dubai are here rather than Downtown.
- Al Fahidi historical district — the old wind-tower quarter, free to wander.
- Dubai Marina and JBR walk — free, and spectacular after dark.
- Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall — free air conditioning, free aquarium viewing from the walkway, free fountain views.
Anyone claiming Dubai cannot be done cheaply has not tried. The city is expensive to consume and free to look at.
Why Dubai has the expensive reputation
Because the version of Dubai that gets photographed is the expensive one. Five structural reasons, none of which are about the city being costly in general.
The marketing shows one tier
Beach resorts, brunches, observation decks, yacht photos. That is a real Dubai and it is genuinely expensive. It is also perhaps a tenth of the city.
Alcohol is hotel-priced by law
Covered above, and it is the single biggest distorter of holiday spend.
Visitors book the wrong location
Booking a beach address and then commuting into the city by taxi twice a day is expensive in a way that has nothing to do with Dubai’s price level.
Attractions are stacked
People arrive with a list of six paid attractions for four days. Any city becomes expensive on that plan.
Nobody counts the things that are cheap
The metro, the food where residents eat, the beaches, the souks, the taxis. There is no tax on income here and no sales tax on most everyday purchases beyond VAT, and everyday goods are not expensive by international standards.
Eleven ways to cut a Dubai bill
- Stay within walking distance of a metro station. The single highest-value decision on this list.
- Buy a Silver Nol card at the airport and use the metro as your default.
- Eat one meal a day in a cafeteria. AED 20 instead of AED 90, and often better food.
- Travel outside November to March if you can tolerate heat. Room rates fall sharply.
- Pick one observation experience, not three.
- Do the free half of the city properly — creek, souks, beaches, fountain.
- Book the desert as a private car for a group rather than per person, if there are four or more of you.
- Skip hotel breakfast unless it is included. A bakery breakfast is a fifth of the price.
- Carry a refillable water bottle. Small, but Dubai is hot and bought water adds up fast.
- Decide your drinking budget before you go out, because hotel-bar rounds are where the day’s plan dies.
- Pay in dirhams, always. If a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline — the exchange rate applied is worse than your bank’s.
How Dubai compares
Dubai’s day-to-day costs sit broadly in line with a major Western European or North American city, with two clear exceptions in each direction.

Read that table and the answer to the question falls out on its own. Dubai is expensive at exactly the two things a holiday is built around — the room and the drinks — and cheap at almost everything else. Manage those two and the city is not an expensive place to visit.

Is Dubai expensive for tourists?
It depends almost entirely on the hotel and the drinking. Transport, everyday food and the free attractions are cheap by the standards of any large Western city. Rooms in peak season and alcohol in licensed hotel bars are genuinely expensive. Manage those two and Dubai is not an expensive city to visit.
Is 100 dollars a day enough in Dubai?
Yes, comfortably, if the room is booked separately. About AED 365 covers metro travel, three meals, one paid attraction and a contingency. It will not stretch to a night of hotel-bar drinking or a beach-resort room.
How much money do I need for a week in Dubai?
Excluding flights and the hotel, a careful traveller needs roughly AED 1,050 to 1,750 for the week, a comfortable one AED 2,450 to 3,850. The room is a separate decision and usually costs more than everything on that list combined.
How expensive is the Dubai metro?
Cheap and fixed. A Silver Nol journey is AED 3 within one zone, AED 5 across two adjacent zones and AED 7.5 for three or more. Gold class costs exactly double for the front carriage. Children five and under travel free. Seven-day passes start at AED 50.
Why is Dubai so expensive?
Mostly it is not. Two things are: hotel rooms in the cool months, and alcohol, which by law is served almost exclusively in licensed hotel venues and is therefore priced as a hotel drink. Those two dominate a holiday budget and colour every account of the city.
How much does a meal cost in Dubai?

Is Dubai cheaper than Europe?

Is Dubai expensive for Indian tourists?
The same structure applies regardless of where you are travelling from: transport and everyday food are inexpensive, rooms and alcohol are not. Dubai has an extremely large South Asian population, which means excellent, genuinely cheap Indian and Pakistani food is available across Deira, Bur Dubai and Karama.

Do you need to tip in Dubai?
Tipping is customary rather than obligatory and is not added automatically in most places. It is not the part of your budget that will decide whether the trip is affordable — the room, the drinks and the attraction stack decide that.
Is the Burj Khalifa worth the money?
It is the single most expensive hour many visitors buy, and it shows you a city you can see for nothing from a dozen public places. If you only pay for one thing in Dubai, most guests tell us afterwards that the desert was the better purchase.
What is the cheapest month to visit Dubai?
High summer, when demand falls sharply and room rates fall with it. The trade-off is heat that genuinely restricts what you can do in the middle of the day, which is why summer visitors should plan morning and evening activity rather than afternoons.
Is Dubai expensive to visit?
Dubai is only as expensive as the choices you make. The anchors visitors remember most often cost nothing. Emaar states the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August), and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque entry is free with a pre-booked online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Hotels, alcohol and taxi habits are where budgets actually break.
Is there a tourist tax on hotels in Dubai?
Yes, and it is charged per room rather than per person. The UAE government portal states that Dubai hotels charge a Tourism Dirham Fee per room per night of occupancy, for a maximum of 30 consecutive nights, ranging from AED 7 to 20 depending on the category or grade of the hotel (u.ae, read 17 August). Ras Al Khaimah applies AED 15 per room per night (u.ae, read 17 August). It is usually collected at check-out and sits separately from Value Added Tax and any service charge, so it rarely appears inside an online room quote.
Can tourists claim VAT back in Dubai?
Often yes, on goods you carry home. The UAE government portal sets Value Added Tax at 5 per cent and says the tourist must be at least 18, must buy from a retailer participating in the Tax Refund for Tourists scheme, and must present the tax invoice, tax-free tags and the goods themselves (u.ae, read 17 August). It is valid on a minimum spend of AED 250, refunds 85 per cent of the VAT paid after a fee of AED 4.80 per tax-free tag, and is claimed at a device in the departure airport, seaport or border port (u.ae, read 17 August).
What can you do in Dubai for free?
A great deal, and we would rather you spent an evening on the free list than on a second paid tour. Emaar states the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August). Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque entry is free with a pre-booked online access pass, and the live visiting hours page gives 09:00 to 20:30 Monday to Sunday with Friday split into 09:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30 (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Nearby, Mangrove National Park, Umm Al Emarat Park and Manarat Al Saadiyat cost nothing to enter (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August).
Are taxis and the metro expensive in Dubai?
Public transport is one of the cheapest things about the city. RTA lists silver nol fares of AED 3, 5 and 7.50 depending on how many zones you cross, and the Dubai Creek abra at AED 1 to 2 (rta.ae, read 17 August). Taxis are where a day quietly gets expensive, particularly between Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina and the airport at peak hours. If your hotel sits on a Dubai Metro line and your plans are Downtown, drop the taxi habit entirely. It is the single easiest saving most visitors never make.
Is Abu Dhabi cheaper than Dubai?
Broadly yes on hotels and beaches, and the free list runs deep. The Department of Culture and Tourism names Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Al Jahili Fort, Mangrove National Park, Jebel Hafit and Wahat Al Karama among places to visit free of charge (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Corniche Beach needs a word of precision, because the official round-up calls it free while its own beach page lists a gate fee: the Al Sahil section at Gate 4 is genuinely free, and the serviced family gates charge a modest posted fee. Budget a little if you want a lounger.
Is a desert safari worth the money?
Be honest about which experience you are buying. If your trip is already tight, a crowded shared camp in a busy dune belt on your only free evening is not worth stretching a budget for. The fountain promenade and a Creek abra at AED 1 to 2 cost almost nothing and still feel like Dubai (rta.ae, read 17 August). Where a safari earns its price is when you want dune driving, sunset and dinner handled in one evening without a separate transfer. We own and built our own desert camp, so the camp you see is ours.
Is a private desert safari more expensive than a shared one?
Per booking, yes, and it will not always be the right call. Some operators and the large booking platforms sell seat-in-coach safaris that are genuinely cheaper for one or two adults who do not mind sharing a vehicle, and if price is your only variable you should take that. Our private tours are priced per vehicle, so children add nothing and a family of five pays what a couple pays. That is where the maths flips in our favour. For a solo traveller counting every dirham, it usually does not.
How can I visit Dubai on a tight budget?
Anchor the trip on what is free or near free, then buy one paid experience instead of three. RTA silver nol fares run AED 3, 5 or 7.50 by zone and the Creek abra is AED 1 to 2 (rta.ae, read 17 August). Emaar says the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August). Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque entry is free with a pre-booked online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Leave room for the Tourism Dirham of AED 7 to 20 per room per night (u.ae, read 17 August).
Do I have to pay a deposit or a booking fee to reserve a tour?
Not with us. There is no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay on the day. Free cancellation applies up to 12 hours before pickup, so a change of plan or a delayed flight does not cost you money. That flexibility matters in a city where the hotel bill already carries a Tourism Dirham of AED 7 to 20 per room per night alongside service and municipality charges (u.ae, read 17 August). Families feel the cost most in the multiplier, because almost everything is priced per head. Our private tours are priced per vehicle, so children add nothing to the tour price. Hotels help a little too, since the Tourism Dirham is charged per room per night at AED 7 to 20 by hotel grade rather than per guest (u.ae, read 17 August). Free options carry a family day well, from the Dubai Fountain promenade, which Emaar says can be enjoyed free of charge (emaar.com, read 17 August), to public parks and beaches.
Is a desert safari from Abu Dhabi different in price to one from Dubai?
They are different products more than different price points. The Abu Dhabi dune belt sits further from the city, so pickup windows are longer and a private vehicle makes more sense than a shared bus. Dubai has the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, described as the country’s first national park, covering five per cent of the emirate and reached through approved tour operators (ddcr.org, read 17 August), and reserve access pushes prices up. If you are staying in Abu Dhabi, pair the desert with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where entry is free (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).
Do you need to tip in Dubai, and is service already included?
Check the bill before you add anything. The UAE government portal lists a 10 per cent service charge among the charges establishments may apply, alongside 10 per cent municipality fees, and Value Added Tax of 5 per cent applies more broadly (u.ae, read 17 August). Where that service charge already appears, a further tip is optional rather than expected, and rounding up a taxi fare is normal. Nobody here will chase you for a percentage. Knowing this plainly saves most visitors more across a week than the money-saving lists they will read.
Is quad biking an expensive add-on and what is included?
Quad biking is a separate activity from the drive itself, so treat it as its own decision rather than assuming it is bundled. Helmets are provided and are compulsory on our quads. We do not publish a minimum age for quad biking; it is confirmed per booking, because it depends on the machine and the rider. We also will not quote a figure here that may not hold for your date and group size, so message us on WhatsApp for a current price. If the budget is thin, skip it. The dune drive is the main event.
If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
