The short answer

There is no single best desert safari in Dubai. There are four separate choices, and getting them right matters far more than which company you pick. Which desert, which time of day, which format, and whether Dubai is even the right emirate for the trip.

Every page above this one in the search results is a blogger’s list of companies. We run safaris here and we are not going to write another one. What follows is the four decisions, with what each option actually suits.

Which desert? This decides more than anything else

“Dubai desert safari” covers at least four different landscapes, an hour apart, and the photographs you have seen are probably not all from the same one.

DesertDistance from central DubaiWhat it looks likeBest for
Al Awir35–40 km southeastGolden rolling dunes, the closest real desert to the city. Where our camp isShort drive, families, anyone with limited time
Lahbab, the Red Dunes45–50 kmTall red-iron dunes, the most dramatic and the most photographedDune bashing, photography, repeat visitors
Al Marmoom~40 kmProtected reserve, quieter, wildlife and lakes rather than adrenalineNature over thrills, sunrise, birdwatching
Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve~60 kmThe most restricted and most expensive. Only approved operators may run tours insideConservation-led, premium, small groups

Be careful with the DDCR. The reserve publishes its own approved tours and says: “Look out for our seal so you know you’re booking an eco-friendly experience at the DDCR.” If a company claims to take you inside, that list on ddcr.org is where you confirm it. We are not on it and we do not claim to be — we run Al Awir and Lahbab, which are outside the reserve.

If somebody sells you a safari without naming the dune area, you do not know which of these four you are getting. That single question filters out most of the disappointment people write about afterwards.

Which time of day?

This is the decision most people get wrong, because the evening safari is the one everybody sells and it is not always the right one.

OptionRoughlyWhat you getThe honest downside
Evening~3pm to 9pmDune bashing, sunset, camel, camp, BBQ dinner, the shows. The full packageThe busiest. Camps are at their fullest and the dunes have been driven all day
Morning~8am to 12pmDune bashing and quad biking on fresh sand, far fewer people, cooler in summerNo camp dinner, no shows, no sunset
Sunrise~5am startThe best light of the day, empty dunes, the photographers’ choiceYou have to get up, and it is over by mid-morning
Overnightafternoon to next morningEverything the evening has, plus stars, quiet after the crowds leave, and sunriseMost expensive, and camping is not for everyone

If you have done a safari before, take the morning or sunrise one. The camp show and buffet are the parts repeat visitors consistently say they would skip, and the dunes are genuinely better before they have been carved up by fifty vehicles.

Which format?

Same desert, same activities, very different day depending on the vehicle you are in.

FormatHow it worksSuitsOur price
Shared seat, coach or busYou join a group, fixed pickup window, fixed returnSolo travellers and anyone where price is the deciding factorAED 50 per person, transport only
Self-drive to the campYou drive yourself, we handle the desert partResidents and anyone with a carAED 35 per person
Home or hotel pickup, sharedCollected from your door, shared vehicleFamilies without a car who still want the cheaper optionAED 100 per person
Private 4×4The vehicle is yours, up to 7 guests, your own timingCouples, families, anyone who does not want to wait for strangersAED 799 per car
Private Land CruiserSame, in the larger vehicleGroups of 6–7, or anyone who wants the roomAED 999 per car

The word to watch is “private”. It should mean the vehicle is yours and nobody else is collected. Plenty of listings use it to mean a reserved seat. Ask which one before you pay.

Dubai or Abu Dhabi — which desert is actually better?

We run camps in both emirates, which means we have no reason to talk one of them up. Here is the straight comparison.

DubaiAbu Dhabi
Dune scaleGood. Lahbab red dunes are dramaticBigger. The Al Khatim and Liwa dunes are on another scale entirely
CrowdsBusy. It is the most visited desert in the countryFar quieter, especially midweek
Drive from the city35–50 minutes45–60 minutes from Abu Dhabi city
Choice of operatorEnormous, which is both the advantage and the problemFewer operators, easier to check
If you are staying in DubaiDo this one. Crossing emirates for a safari costs you three hours of your dayOnly worth it if you are already going to Abu Dhabi

The honest answer: Abu Dhabi has the better desert, Dubai has the better logistics. If you are based in Dubai for a few days, do the Dubai safari — the extra dune height is not worth 140 km each way. If you are spending time in Abu Dhabi anyway, do it there instead.

Why there is no list of top companies on this page

Every result above us on this search ranks operators. We are an operator, so any list we wrote would put us on it, and you would be right to ignore it.

There is also a practical problem. A star rating is the easiest thing on the internet to buy, and a “top 10” on a travel blog is usually a list of who pays a commission. Neither tells you whether the company will show up at your hotel.

What actually works is a short list of checks you run yourself, on us and on everyone else:

  1. Ask for the licence number and search it in a government register before you pay
  2. Make them name the dune area — Al Awir, Lahbab, somewhere else
  3. Get the price per car and every inclusion in writing
  4. Ask what costs extra once you are at the camp
  5. Never agree to pay after the vehicle is moving

We wrote those out properly, with the registers and the failure modes, on desert safari Dubai scams. That page is the one to read before you book anybody, including us.

What we run, and when to book someone else

Our camp is on the golden dunes of Al Awir, the closest desert to central Dubai. We also run the Lahbab red dunes. Private safari AED 799 per car, AED 999 in the Land Cruiser, up to 7 guests, hotel pickup included.

  • Book us if you want a private vehicle, a named camp, and the inclusions agreed before anything moves
  • Do not book us if you are solo and price is what matters — the AED 50 shared seat is honestly better value, and we sell that too
  • Book someone else if you specifically want to be inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. We do not operate there, and the reserve lists the companies that do
  • Do not book at all if you have done one recently and only want the photograph. Drive to Al Awir near sunset and you have the best part for the price of fuel

Which page do you need?

Still deciding whether to do one at all. Read is a desert safari in Dubai worth it, where we argue both sides.

Decided, now choosing a company. Read desert safari Dubai scams for the checks and the registers.

Want the prices without the reasoning. That is Dubai desert safari price.

Frequently asked questions

Which desert safari is best in Dubai?

There is no single best one. Decide four things instead: which desert (Al Awir is closest, Lahbab has the red dunes, Al Marmoom is quieter, the DDCR is restricted), which time (evening is fullest, morning and sunrise are better dunes), which format (shared seat versus private vehicle), and whether Dubai or Abu Dhabi suits your trip.

Which desert is best for a desert safari in Dubai?

Lahbab, the Red Dunes, if you want the dramatic photographs and the dune bashing. Al Awir if you want the shortest drive from the city, about 35 to 40 km. Al Marmoom if you would rather have quiet and wildlife than adrenaline. Always make the operator name the area before you book.

Which is the best desert safari company in Dubai?

We are an operator, so any ranking we published would be worthless to you. What works is checking: ask for the licence number and search it in a government register, make them name the dune area, get the price per car with every inclusion in writing, and never pay after the vehicle is moving.

Is the morning or evening desert safari better?

Evening if it is your first time, because it is the only one with the camp, dinner, the shows and the sunset. Morning if you have done one before, because the sand is fresh, there are far fewer vehicles, and it is much cooler in summer.

Which desert safari is better, Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi has the better desert — the Al Khatim and Liwa dunes are on a bigger scale and far less crowded. Dubai has the better logistics. If you are staying in Dubai, do the Dubai safari; crossing emirates costs about three hours of your day for dunes that are taller but not three hours better.

What is the difference between the red dunes and the golden dunes?

Colour and height, from iron content in the sand. Lahbab’s red dunes are taller and more dramatic, which is why dune bashing videos are filmed there. Al Awir’s golden dunes are gentler and much closer to the city, which is why most camps are there.

Can I do a desert safari inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

Only with an operator the reserve has approved. The DDCR publishes its own approved tours and a seal to look for. We do not operate inside the reserve and we do not claim to — our camps are at Al Awir and Lahbab, outside it.

Is a private desert safari worth the extra money?

If there are two or more of you, usually yes, because our price is per car rather than per person. A private vehicle also means no waiting while other guests are collected from four hotels, and you set your own timing. Solo, the shared seat at AED 50 is better value and we will say so.

How much should a desert safari in Dubai cost?

Ours are AED 799 per car for the private safari and AED 999 for the Land Cruiser, up to 7 guests. Transport-only options are AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 by bus and AED 100 for home pickup, per person. Be wary of a very low per-person headline, because that is where the add-ons hide.

Which desert safari is best for families with children?

An evening safari at Al Awir. The drive is shortest, the camp has the shows and the buffet that keep children occupied, and a private vehicle means you leave when your children are done rather than when the group is. Ask for dune bashing to be kept gentle — any good driver will.

Which safari is best for photography?

Sunrise, at Lahbab. The light is the best of the day, the dunes are unmarked, and you are not queueing behind other vehicles. Evening gives you the sunset but the sand has been driven all day and the good spots are shared.

Do I need to book a desert safari in advance?

In peak season, from about November to March, yes, especially for an evening safari at a weekend. In summer there is usually same-day availability. Booking ahead also gives you time to run the licence check rather than deciding in a hurry.

Is an overnight desert safari worth it?

If you like camping, yes — the desert after the day visitors leave is genuinely different, and you get sunrise thrown in. If you do not sleep well outdoors, you are paying the most for the option you will enjoy least. Be honest with yourself about that one.

What should I ask before booking any desert safari?

Five things: the licence number, the dune area by name, whether the price is per car or per person, everything that is included, and everything that costs extra at the camp. A company that answers all five in one message is telling you a lot.

Which desert safari is actually the best one to book in Dubai?

There is no single best one, and the honest answer depends on where you are sleeping. If you are staying in Dubai Marina or Downtown and want a short transfer, book a Dubai-side operator working inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which describes itself as the UAE’s first national park and protects species including the Arabian oryx and the lappet-faced vulture (ddcr.org, read 17 August). We are Abu Dhabi based, licensed by the Department of Culture and Tourism, and we own and built our own desert camp, so we suit you when Abu Dhabi is your base.

Is a desert safari in Dubai worth it or is it a tourist trap?

For most first-time visitors it is worth it, but not for everyone. If you dislike motion, skip the dune drive and ask for a calm route instead. If money is tight, the city gives you free evenings anyway, and Emaar states the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August). A safari earns its price when you want falconry, camel contact and a camp dinner in one trip. Falconry sits on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, shared by twenty-four countries including the UAE (unesco.org, read 17 August).

How much should a desert safari cost per person?

Prices swing enormously, and cheap shared seats genuinely exist below what we charge. We will not quote a rival’s figure, but be honest with yourself: if the lowest number is your only criterion, a large shared operator will beat us and you should book them. Our own rate depends on vehicle, pickup point and season, so message us on WhatsApp for a confirmed figure rather than trusting a headline number. Remember the standard VAT rate in the UAE is five per cent (tax.gov.ae, read 17 August), so ask whether any quote already includes it.

How long does a desert safari take from pickup to drop-off?

Door to door, plan for most of an afternoon and evening rather than a couple of hours, because the pickup, the drive out to the dunes, the camp programme and the return journey all stack up. Ask any operator to confirm your pickup and drop-off times in writing before you agree, especially if you have a flight the same night. If timing is tight, the Roads and Transport Authority notes that Dubai Taxi operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, bookable on 80088088 or the DTC Smart App (rta.ae, read 17 August).

What should I wear for a desert safari?

Loose cotton, closed shoes you do not mind filling with sand, sunglasses, and one light layer for after dark, because the dunes cool quickly once the sun drops. Bring more water than you think you need. The World Health Organization advises drinking water regularly, around one cup an hour and at least two to three litres a day in hot conditions (who.int, read 17 August). If your trip also takes in a mosque, dress modestly, and note that Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque asks visitors to pre-book an online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).

Is dune bashing safe?

It is a controlled drive by an experienced driver on a route he already knows, not a stunt, and you can ask for it to be softened or dropped entirely. Keep the seatbelt on for the whole drive. Tell us before you travel if you are pregnant, have a spinal or heart condition, or suffer motion sickness, and we will plan a gentler route. We will not publish insurance figures or safety statistics we cannot source. Emergency numbers in the UAE are 999 for police, 998 for ambulance and 997 for civil defence (u.ae, read 17 August).

Can you take a baby or a toddler on a desert safari?

You can, and on our private tours the vehicle is priced per vehicle, so children add nothing at all to the fare. Be realistic, though: an infant will not enjoy a dune drive, and a hot camp evening makes a long night for a toddler. Tell us the child’s age when you book so we can plan a calmer route and an earlier finish, and bring your own child restraint if you want one fitted. The World Health Organization flags the very young and the over sixty-fives as most vulnerable to heat (who.int, read 17 August).

Is a desert safari suitable for seniors or someone with a bad back?

Often yes, provided the drive is adjusted, so ask the operator to skip the steep descents rather than assuming they will. If mobility is genuinely limited, the honest answer is that soft sand underfoot may make a desert camp the wrong choice, and Louvre Abu Dhabi or Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque makes an easier afternoon instead; the mosque publishes hours from nine in the morning to eight thirty in the evening, with a Friday midday break (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Tell us about any heart or back condition when you book.

What is the best month of the year for a desert safari?

The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are far more comfortable than high summer, when midday heat is punishing. The World Health Organization advises avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day (who.int, read 17 August), which is exactly why summer departures run early or late. If summer is your only window, take a morning or a late evening slot. If you tolerate heat badly, be honest and spend that trip on indoor Abu Dhabi, then book the desert on a later visit.

Morning or evening desert safari, which one is better?

Evening wins for most people because it bundles the camp dinner, the live shows and cooler air into one trip. Morning wins if you want quiet dunes, softer light for photographs and your afternoon left free. With small children or an older relative, morning is usually kinder. Be warned that evening camps get busy, so if you specifically want solitude a shared evening camp will disappoint you and a private morning run suits you better. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate, spanning 67,340 square kilometres (u.ae, read 17 August), which leaves plenty of quiet desert.

Do you need a helmet for quad biking in the desert?

Yes. On our quad biking, helmets are provided and wearing one is compulsory, with no exception for a photograph. We do not publish a minimum age for quad biking, because it depends on the machine and on conditions that day, so confirm it with us per booking rather than relying on a number you read on another site. We also do not publish rider insurance details. If any operator waves you onto a quad without a helmet or a safety briefing, treat that as your signal to walk away and book elsewhere.

Can I do a desert safari from Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai?

Yes, and it is usually the better call when Abu Dhabi is your base, because you avoid a long transfer in each direction. We are licensed by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, and we own and built our own desert camp, so the camp you visit is ours rather than a slot rented from someone else. If you are sleeping in Dubai, be honest about the drive and book a Dubai-side operator. Abu Dhabi also offers Liwa oasis and Jebel Hafeet, which rises 1,240 metres (u.ae, read 17 August).

Do I have to pay a deposit or a booking fee upfront?

With us, no. There is no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay on the day. That is deliberately different from the large online marketplaces, which take card payment the moment you book. To be fair to them, prepayment has real advantages: instant confirmation, checkout in your own currency, and a card trail your bank recognises if something goes wrong. If you want that certainty, they do it better than we do. If you would rather not hand over card details weeks ahead for a desert trip, message us on WhatsApp instead.

What happens if I need to cancel my desert safari?

We offer free cancellation up to twelve hours before pickup, and because nothing is prepaid with us there is no refund to chase in the first place. Compare that honestly against the big booking platforms, several of which advertise free cancellation on longer notice windows and process refunds automatically, which some travellers prefer. Read whichever window applies to you before you commit. If we have to cancel a trip ourselves — for weather, a vehicle issue or driver illness — we contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you, and you pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

Is a private desert safari worth paying extra for?

It depends entirely on group size. Our private tours are priced per vehicle, so a family of five pays the same as a couple and children add nothing, which usually works out cheaper per head than buying five shared seats. For a solo traveller or a couple watching every dirham, shared is honestly better value and you should book that. Private buys control rather than luxury: your own pace, your own stops, no waiting on other guests, and the freedom to cut the dune drive short if someone in the car feels uneasy.

Can someone in a wheelchair go on a desert safari?

Partly. A foldable wheelchair travels in the Land Cruiser boot if you declare it when booking. A powered or non-folding chair cannot be carried, and we would rather tell you that now than at your hotel door. If that describes your situation, a Dubai operator running a lift-equipped vehicle will serve you better, and the large booking platforms let you filter directly for wheelchair-accessible tours, which is a genuinely better tool than anything on our own site. Soft sand remains the real obstacle at any desert camp, including ours.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
