The drive from Abu Dhabi city runs roughly two to two-and-a-half hours on excellent highway — any car manages the tarmac. The dunes are a different contract entirely: Empty Quarter sand is soft, the bowls between ridges are deep, and recovery for a lone stuck vehicle is measured in hours and thousands of dirhams. When to Go

October to April is Liwa’s season — warm days, cold desert nights (pack proper layers; guests are always surprised), and the festival crowds arriving around the winter racing. Summer trips run at dawn and dusk only, and the overnight becomes a test of enthusiasm. If your dates are flexible, aim for the winter weeks: dune conditions, light and temperature all peak together.

You can do it in a day, but be honest about the arithmetic: four to six hours in the car for a few hours on the sand. An overnight makes the distance worth paying — you get sunset, night sky and sunrise, which is when the dunes actually look like the photographs. If you cannot spare a night, we would rather you spent the day closer to the city.
Is Liwa better than a normal Abu Dhabi desert safari? +
Not always, and not for everyone. Liwa gives you far bigger, emptier, redder dunes and almost no other tourists. But a standard Abu Dhabi desert safari costs less, takes half the time, and delivers the same core experiences — dune driving, camel ride, camp dinner, entertainment. If you are travelling with small children, if you have one day only, or if you are watching the budget, take the closer safari. Choose Liwa when the landscape itself is the reason for the trip.
Is Liwa Oasis in the Empty Quarter? +
It sits on its northern edge. Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority describes the Rub’ al Khali as covering roughly 650,000 square kilometres across south-eastern Saudi Arabia with portions reaching into Yemen, Oman and the UAE, calling it one of the driest regions in the world and virtually uninhabited (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Can I drive to Liwa in a hire car, and can I go on the dunes with it? +
The tarmac road to Liwa is fine in any ordinary car. The dunes are not. Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority advises that off-road desert driving needs a desert-ready vehicle with proper tyre inspection, engine checks and a 4WD system, plus a first-aid kit, spare tyre, tool kit, plenty of water, navigation tools and a charged phone (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Emergency numbers are 999 for police and 998 for ambulance. A saloon car on soft sand will be stuck within metres.
What is the Liwa Crossing, and should I attempt it? +
It is a long desert route through the Liwa dunes. Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority describes it as a 109-kilometre adventure suited to experienced off-roaders, featuring deep red dunes and salt pools, and recommends allowing one and a half to two days and carrying your own fuel, water and food (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). This is not a tourist activity. If you have never driven soft sand in convoy with recovery gear and a second vehicle, do not start here.
Why do the date palms at Liwa matter so much? +
Because they are a living seed bank. The FAO describes the Al Ain and Liwa oases as globally significant in-situ repositories of date palm genetic resources, records roughly 200 date palm cultivars in the UAE with about 70 economically significant, and notes date palm occupies 15 per cent of the country’s total crop cultivation area (fao.org, read 17 August). The oases were irrigated by aflaj — traditional channels, mostly underground, moving groundwater by gravity.
Where can you stay in the Liwa desert? +

There are also simpler hotels and rest houses in and around Mezaira’a and Madinat Zayed for a fraction of the price. If the resort is beyond your budget, staying in town and driving out at dawn gives you the same landscape without the room rate.
Can a wheelchair user visit Liwa? +
Partly. The drive, the roadside dune viewpoints and hotel facilities are manageable; soft sand is not, and no operator can change that. On our vehicles a foldable wheelchair travels in the Land Cruiser boot provided you declare it when booking. A powered or non-folding chair cannot be carried.
