Dubai Connect is a free hotel on a long connection. An Emirates stopover is a paid package where you deliberately stay a night or more in Dubai as part of your fare. Different products, different prices, and only one of them is free.

Arrivals. You are leaving the terminal, so the Transfer signs are the wrong ones. The Dubai Connect desk is in Arrivals and that is where you collect your hotel and coach details.

Take the hotel if you arrive after midnight, if you are flying long-haul on both sides, or if you have small children. See the city if you arrive in the afternoon or early evening on a 12-hour-plus gap, especially if it is your first time in Dubai. On a long overnight you can genuinely do both.

Emirates makes the same point in its terms, saying you must be successful in obtaining entry to the UAE to be eligible (emirates.com, read 17 August). Once you are landside, public transport is genuinely cheap: silver nol fares are AED 3, 5 or 7.50 depending on zone (rta.ae, read 17 August).

The hotel, meals, coach transfers and the 48-hour visa are presented as complimentary, but Emirates says personal expenses such as the mini-bar, spa and dining outside the included meals need a credit card at check-in (emirates.com, read 17 August). Eligibility also depends on what you paid, because the terms set minimum base-fare-plus-surcharge thresholds by departure region before an itinerary qualifies. Honestly, if you flew on a deep discount fare you may not qualify at all, and quietly booking your own airport hotel can be calmer than gambling on approval.

Emirates names the Copthorne Hotel Dubai, the Le Méridien Dubai Airport hotel and the JW Marriott Marquis, or another alternative at its discretion (emirates.com, read 17 August). You do not choose. The terms add that passengers booked in Premium Economy or Economy keep that hotel tier even if upgraded, while Business or First passengers who are involuntarily downgraded at check-in still receive the Business or First hotel. Plan your free hours around the coach transfer rather than a specific address, because the property is often confirmed late.

You can. Dubai Connect gives you a bed and a coach, not an obligation, and the coach runs to and from the hotel (emirates.com, read 17 August). Emirates asks you to clear passport control and security ninety minutes before departure, be at the gate sixty minutes ahead in Premium Economy or Economy and forty-five in First or Business, and allows around thirty minutes to move between Terminal 3 concourses (emirates.com, read 17 August). Add the drive each way and a comfortable Abu Dhabi run taking in Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque wants roughly ten hours or more of connection. Mosque entry itself is free with a pre-booked online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).

Dubai Airports says short-term storage operates around the clock at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. At Terminal 3 it is Emirates Left Luggage on the arrivals level near Exit 1, behind the pharmacy, priced at AED 35 for twelve hours or less for standard-size luggage and AED 40 for non-standard size (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). That is cheap enough that we would rather you use it than pay anybody to mind bags. Our Land Cruiser boot is meant for a day bag, not a full set of checked suitcases.

The terms say up to two children, defined as passengers under eighteen on the date of departure, may be accommodated when travelling with one adult, and that anyone travelling alone must be eighteen or over (emirates.com, read 17 August). Every traveller, infants included, must hold the travel documents required for entry, and passports need a minimum validity of one hundred and eighty days. No. There is no deposit and no booking fee, you pay on the day, and cancellation is free up to twelve hours before pickup. We are licensed by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi and we own and built our own desert camp, so you are dealing with the operator rather than a reseller passing you down a chain. We do not publish a fixed figure for every layover combination, so message us on WhatsApp with your flight numbers and connection time and we will quote the vehicle.

Yes, when the connection is long enough. A safari runs into the evening, so it suits a layover where several hours remain after the entertainment finishes. Quad biking is available, helmets are provided and are compulsory, and we deliberately do not publish a minimum age for quad bikes, so confirm that per booking. Because the camp is ours we control the running order and can shorten the evening to get you back to Terminal 3 in time. If your onward flight departs before late evening, take a daytime tour instead.

We watch the inbound flight and move the pickup where the timing still works. If the connection collapses you simply cancel, and since there is no deposit and no booking fee there is nothing to lose; cancellation is free up to twelve hours before pickup. Emirates states in its terms that it cannot accept responsibility for loss, damage or expense arising from delays or changes in schedules (emirates.com, read 17 August). Keep the whole layover plan loose and avoid buying anything non-refundable around a connection you do not control.

Yes. Emaar states the fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade and publishes the current show times (emaar.com, read 17 August). A temporarily-closed-for-renovation banner on the tower site is stale, and we follow Emaar because it is the owner-operator page. A Creek abra crossing costs only AED 1 to 2 and silver nol fares run AED 3 to 7.50 by zone (rta.ae, read 17 August). If the fountain and the creek are all you want, spend a few dirhams on the metro rather than booking anything through us.

Partly, and we would rather be blunt. A foldable wheelchair travels in the Land Cruiser boot if you declare it at booking; powered or non-folding chairs cannot be carried, so a layover tour with us is the wrong choice for those travellers and a specialist accessible vehicle is better. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque publishes visiting hours of 09:00 to 20:30 Monday to Sunday, with Friday split into 09:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30, and entry is free with a pre-booked access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).
