Dubai Transit Visa

Not if you stay inside the terminal and never clear immigration. You need one only to leave the airport, and even then only if your nationality does not already get a UAE visa on arrival. GCC citizens need nothing at all.

The two official sources differ. GDRFA, Dubai immigration, publishes “AED 50, plus fees for the mediator service(Airlines)”. Emirates, which issues most of them, lists US$10 for the 48-hour and US$49 for the 96-hour. Confirm the price on the airline’s own page when you apply.

You do not apply directly. GDRFA states “Applications should be submitted through approved airlines.” With Emirates you apply online or at the Emirates Commercial Visa APT office in Dubai International Terminal 3. GDRFA lists processing time as 48 hours, so do it well before you fly.

GDRFA lists three: a recent colour passport-sized photograph with a white background; a copy of the passport or travel document including the cover, valid for at least six months; and a flight ticket confirming onward travel. The word “cover” matters — scanning only the photo page gets applications rejected.

Emirates states both the 48-hour and 96-hour visas are “valid for 30 days from the date of issue”, against 60 days for other visa types. That is the trap on a trip booked far ahead: apply too early and it can expire before you fly.

No. Emirates marks both the 48-hour and the 96-hour as “Non extendable”. If there is any chance you will want longer, take the 96-hour, because the difference is roughly US$39.

Usually the 96-hour. The extra cost is about US$39 and it removes the risk of a delayed inbound flight consuming most of a 48-hour window. The 48-hour is only sensible if you know you want one outing and then straight back.

Yes, if you qualify for Dubai Connect. Emirates provides a “Complimentary 48 hour visa, which should be prearranged at least 48 hours prior to arrival for those nationalities requiring a visa”, alongside a complimentary hotel, meals and coach transfers.

Emirates states two different deadlines on the same page — “at least 12 hours ahead of your incoming flight” and “at least 24 hours prior to the departure of the inbound flight”. Work to the stricter 24 hours, and if you need the visa, arrange it 48 hours before arrival.

Many Indian travellers do not need one. The UAE government states Indian passport holders with a valid US visit visa, US green card, or UK or EU residence visa can get a visa on arrival for “a maximum stay of 14 days”, which is longer and simpler than any transit visa. Without one of those, the transit visa route through your airline applies.

Yes, if you hold a valid visa or qualify for one on arrival, and if you have the time. Under six hours we would tell you not to bother — immigration, traffic and the return buffer consume it. Eight to twelve hours is where leaving genuinely pays off.

No. A visa on arrival is granted at the border to eligible nationalities and typically runs 30 or 90 days. A transit visa is arranged in advance through an airline, costs money, and lasts 48 or 96 hours. If you are eligible for visa on arrival, use that instead.

Four days is a real short trip. A desert safari, Downtown and the Fountain, Old Dubai and the souks, and still a full day for Abu Dhabi or Hatta. We run the transport per car rather than per person, with the driver tracking your flight.

No. Get the visa confirmed first, then book transport. We would rather take your call from the arrivals hall than have you pay for something a visa refusal makes useless.

Only if you leave the airport and you are not already eligible for visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. The government platform explains that a transit visa is for travellers who are not eligible for those and who plan to exit the terminal, and that it must be processed and approved before you enter the country (u.ae, read 17 August). Staying airside at Dubai International needs no UAE visa at all. Dubai Airports adds that certain nationalities can get a visa on arrival when transit time is longer than eight hours (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Check your own passport first.

There is no single government price; each sponsoring airline sets its own. Emirates publishes US$10 for the 48-hour transit visa and US$49 for the 96-hour version (emirates.com, read 17 August). Etihad publishes AED 55 for 48 hours and AED 216 for 96 hours (etihad.com, read 17 August). Both are single entry and both are non-extendable. Agents and the large booking platforms resell the same permits with a markup added, so applying directly through the airline carrying you is usually the cheapest route. We do not sell visas and never charge you for one.

Emirates says roughly three to four working days (emirates.com, read 17 August). Etihad says around four business days and asks you to wait at least five days before tracking your application (etihad.com, read 17 August). Neither is instant, and the local working week affects the queue. The government platform is clear that the visa must be approved before you enter the country, so there is no on-the-spot fix waiting for you at immigration (u.ae, read 17 August). Apply well ahead, and if approval has not landed close to departure, plan an airside layover instead.

No. The government platform states plainly that the transit visa is a single-entry visa and cannot be extended (u.ae, read 17 August). Emirates and Etihad both mark their 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas as non-extendable on their own visa pages (emirates.com and etihad.com, read 17 August). If you want longer in the country, apply for the correct visit visa from the start rather than hoping to convert later. Anyone offering to extend one for a fee is selling something the published rules do not support, so build your plans around the hours you actually hold.

They start when you enter, not when the visa is issued. Emirates publishes both transit visas as valid for entry for 30 days from the issue date, with the 48 or 96 hours running from arrival (emirates.com, read 17 August). Etihad also gives a 30-day entry window on its single-entry transit visa (etihad.com, read 17 August). So an approval sitting in your inbox is not burning your clock. Plan any excursion against your arrival time and your onward check-in deadline rather than the approval email, and keep a generous buffer.

Honestly, longer than most people assume. Treat a safari as needing most of a day once you add pickup, the drive out, the dunes, camp time and the return. Then add clearing immigration and, at Dubai International, moving between terminals, since the D gates and the A gates are reached by an airport train (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). If your total connection is short or your bags are not checked through, stay airside or do something within reach of the terminal. Missing your onward flight costs far more than the tour.

There can be. Emirates Dubai Connect provides a complimentary hotel stay with applicable meals included and a complimentary coach to and from the hotel, and the booking includes a complimentary 48-hour visa that should be prearranged at least 48 hours before arrival for nationalities that need one. Book at least twelve hours before your incoming flight, note it is subject to availability, and passengers under eighteen must travel with an adult (emirates.com, read 17 August). If you qualify for that, take it before paying anyone at all for a visa.

More than you would expect. Emaar states the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade and publishes the current show times (emaar.com, read 17 August). The Creek abra costs AED 1 to 2, a silver nol fare is AED 3, 5 or 7.50 by zone, and metro stations run 05:00 to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 05:00 to 01:00 Friday and 08:00 to midnight Sunday (rta.ae, read 17 August). On a tight window or budget, that beats booking any tour.

Yes. The permit is a national entry permit rather than a Dubai-only one, so the other emirates are open to you. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque entry is free with a pre-booked online access pass, and the live visiting hours page gives 09:00 to 20:30 Monday to Sunday, with Friday split into 09:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30 (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). A terms document on the same domain says otherwise; we follow the live page. Count the drive in both directions before committing to anything else that day.

The government platform states that transit visas are sponsored by UAE-based airlines and can be applied for through those airlines, travel agencies or airport hotels (u.ae, read 17 August). Dubai’s own portal instead describes applying through a UAE-based airline or through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (dubai.ae, read 17 August). The two official pages list slightly different channels; we follow u.ae as the national platform and read the Directorate as the Dubai-side route. Either way the sponsor is an airline or an authority, never a tour operator like us.

No. If you never cross immigration you are not formally entering the country, so the connection itself needs no entry permit. Dubai Airports notes that passengers travelling on separate tickets without a Dubai visa must clear passport control, retrieve their baggage and check in again for the onward flight, which is exactly the case where a visa does matter (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Left luggage is available at the airport, with cost varying by bag size and storage duration. Confirm your bags are tagged through before assuming you can stay airside.

Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council states need no visa and present a GCC passport or national identity card at the point of entry, while listed nationalities receive 30-day or 90-day entry on arrival (u.ae, read 17 August). Indian passport holders with a valid United States visit visa or green card, or a United Kingdom or European Union residence visa, can obtain up to fourteen days on arrival (u.ae, read 17 August). Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. If that covers you, do not buy a transit visa.

You can, provided the clock genuinely allows it. Helmets are provided and are compulsory for quad biking, and we deliberately do not publish a minimum age for it, so confirm that for your booking before you fly. Transfers run in a Toyota Land Cruiser, and a foldable wheelchair travels in the boot if you declare it when booking, though powered or non-folding chairs cannot be carried. If your connection is genuinely tight, skip the dunes entirely; a rushed drive back to the terminal is not worth the flight risk.

The drinking age here is 21, so anyone younger should not plan an evening around bars. Dubai Customs sets 18 as the minimum age to carry an alcohol allowance, which is four litres, or two cartons of 24 cans of up to 355 millilitres (dubaicustoms.gov.ae, read 17 August).
