Is a Desert Safari in Dubai Worth It?

Honestly, no. A safari swallows most of an evening, much of it sitting in a vehicle on the way out and back, and you will see the city only in the dark through a window. Emaar states the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August), which costs nothing and fills the same slot. Save the desert for a trip where you have two clear days. We would rather lose the booking than sell you a rushed night you end up resenting.

Do not judge on the headline number. A very cheap seat usually means a long pickup loop collecting strangers across the city, a short dune segment and a busy camp where the extras are sold to you once you have arrived and cannot walk away. We do not publish a figure here because our rate moves with vehicle type and pickup point, so message us on WhatsApp for a quote. What we will commit to is that private tours are priced per vehicle, so children add nothing, and there is no deposit and no booking fee.

It is a controlled drive on soft sand in a four-wheel drive, not a stunt run. UAE law requires every passenger to wear a seat belt, including in the rear, and a front-seat passenger must be at least 145 centimetres tall and no younger than ten (u.ae, read 17 August). Inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, four-wheel excursions are restricted to pre-planned routes and only approved operators with qualified, registered guides may run them (ddcr.org, read 17 August). You can always ask for a gentle drive, or go straight to camp.

It can work, with conditions attached. UAE law requires a child safety seat for children up to four years old, and nobody under ten or shorter than 145 centimetres may sit in front (u.ae, read 17 August), so tell us ages when you book. Because our private tours are priced per vehicle, children add nothing to the total. With a baby under two we would skip the dune drive altogether and do a straight run to camp; the World Health Organization lists infants and children among those most vulnerable to heat (who.int, read 17 August).

If there are three or more of you, usually yes. A private Land Cruiser means your own pickup time, no waiting while a minibus collects strangers from four hotels, and the freedom to cut the dune drive short or linger at the dunes for photographs. Because we price private tours per vehicle rather than per head, children add nothing to the total, which closes the gap with per-person group seats faster than most people expect. If you are a solo traveller watching the budget, take the shared seat; we will tell you the same.

Take this seriously. The World Health Organization warns that above 40 degrees Celsius an electric fan heats the body rather than cools it, names older adults, infants, children and people with heart, kidney or respiratory conditions as most at risk, and advises two to three litres of water daily plus light, loose clothing (who.int, read 17 August). A late-slot summer safari is doable if you hydrate and stay in shade, but quad biking and long dune sessions in that heat are genuinely miserable. The cooler months give you far more for the same money.

They are different products, not better and worse. Morning runs are cooler, quieter and shorter, which suits families and anyone with a flight later that day, but there is no dinner and no live show. Evening runs give you the sunset, the camp meal and the performances, and cost more because of it. If empty dunes and photographs matter more to you than entertainment, take the morning slot and spend the evening somewhere in the city. If this is your only desert outing, take the evening.

Usually very little, and any operator promising a wildlife experience on a standard camp tour is overselling it. The reserve is the exception. The IUCN describes the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve as home to the only free-roaming herds of protected Arabian oryx in Dubai (iucn.org, read 17 August), and the reserve reports Arabian and sand gazelles alongside a houbara reintroduction programme, with access limited to approved operators on set routes (ddcr.org, read 17 August). If wildlife is your real reason for going, book one of those permitted operators rather than us.

Treat it as a photograph rather than an activity and you will be happy. At almost every camp it is a short, slow, led loop, not a trek, and it is included rather than sold separately. If you want genuine distance on a camel, look for a dedicated trekking product instead; Experience Abu Dhabi lists camel trekking among the things people go to the Empty Quarter for (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Anyone with back or hip trouble should skip the mount, because getting on and off is the awkward part, not the riding.

Only if you actually want to drive something. Quad biking is sold as a timed add-on at nearly every camp, and it is exactly where a cheap headline price quietly grows into a real bill. On our tours helmets are provided and wearing one is compulsory, with no exceptions. We deliberately do not publish a minimum age for quad biking, because it depends on the machine and the rider, so confirm it with us for your specific booking rather than assuming. If bikes make you nervous, a buggy with seats and belts suits most people better.

Worth it for the sky, not for the comfort. An overnight puts you in the dunes after the day tours have gone, which is the only time the desert is genuinely quiet, and the stars are the whole point. Expect basic sleeping arrangements, cold nights in winter and an early start. If you are staying in Dubai with limited days, do it in Dubai; the drive to Abu Dhabi’s deep desert eats a day and a Dubai-based operator will serve you better than we will. Abu Dhabi wins on sheer scale. Experience Abu Dhabi describes the Empty Quarter as covering roughly 650,000 square kilometres across Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman and the UAE, with Tel Moreeb rising over 300 metres at a 50-degree incline (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Then do not buy the dune drive, from us or anyone. A safari involves repeated drops down soft sand at speed, and there is no version of it gentle enough for late pregnancy or a damaged spine. A calmer alternative costs nothing: Dubai Municipality states that Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve are open to the public year round, with guided tours available to book (dm.gov.ae, read 17 August). If you still want the camp evening, ask us for a private transfer straight to camp with no dune bashing.

The usual ones are quad bike or buggy time, longer camel rides, larger henna designs, shisha brought to your table, souvenir photographs, and drinks beyond the included soft ones. None of that is a scandal, but together they turn a cheap headline into a real bill, so ask exactly what is included before you hand over money.
