And because the vehicle is yours, the timing is yours. The dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride and photo stops are scheduled first. If your day is tight you can do those and head back early. The honest catch: the BBQ dinner and the live shows run later in the evening, so an early finish means missing them. That is exactly why the half day is private-vehicle only — on a shared coach you leave when the group leaves.

Worth one more line, because Google’s own AI summary tells travellers to expect around $48 to $60 per person and notes these tours run in the Al Khatim Desert. Al Khatim is where our camp is, and a private car for six works out near AED 133 each — about $36.
Children, Infants and Family Pricing — Published Openly
We read every page-one listing on 31 July. Not one publishes a child price. Viator says only “Discounted rates for kids” with no number, and charges infant seats at the child rate. Everyone else is silent.
Ours needs no table, because there is nothing to disclose: it is one price for the vehicle. AED 799 for up to seven guests, AED 800 for a Land Cruiser, whatever the ages. A child costs nothing extra because you are not buying seats. Under 3 travel free on a parent’s lap.
Two adults and three children pay AED 799 — about AED 160 each, everyone in one car. The same family on a per-adult listing at $64 with an undisclosed child rate cannot work out their total until the payment screen.
Which slot suits children better?
Honestly, the morning. Cooler, shorter, finished before the afternoon heat and nowhere near bedtime. The afternoon run is the fuller experience, but it ends around 10:00 PM. If you want the shows and have small children, finishing after sunset is a sensible middle — and with your own vehicle you can.
Dune bashing is the one element to think about. It is genuinely bumpy. Say so at pickup and the driver takes a flat track out to camp instead — it costs nothing and changes nothing else.
How Long Is the Dune Bashing, and What Is Actually Included?
Dune bashing is the headline on every listing here and exactly one competitor states how long it lasts — Xtreme Sightseeing says 45 minutes. Google’s AI summary says 30 to 40. “I do not want to be driven”
Some guests want the desert without the transfer — they have their own car, or they are already out that way. That option exists on our evening safari, where guests who drive themselves to camp pay considerably less than those taking pickup. The morning safari is different: it is sold as the vehicle with a driver, because getting to and around the Al Khatim dunes at 8:00 AM is not something to attempt in a rental saloon. Message us and we will tell you honestly whether self-drive makes sense for your plan.
Pickup, Timing and Cancellation — The Rules Nobody Publishes
Every operator here sells hotel pickup. Not one publishes what happens if you are late, or how long the driver waits. We checked all of them.
Our pickup rules
- Evening pickup is from about 2:30 PM; morning pickup is 7:30 AM. Your driver confirms the exact time by WhatsApp the day before — exact timing shifts a little by season and by where you are staying.
- We collect from hotels, residences and the cruise terminal across Abu Dhabi.
- Be in the lobby, not in your room. Almost every late departure we have had was a guest still upstairs.
- Tell your hotel front desk the night before that a driver is collecting you, so they do not send them away.
- If you need to be back early, say so when you book, not on the day. The activities are scheduled first so this is usually workable — but it depends which vehicle you are on, and we would rather tell you honestly up front than improvise in the desert.

- You want the option to finish after sunset instead, and keep part of your evening.
- Your morning is committed but your afternoon is free.
When a private vehicle is NOT the right choice
The private vehicle earns its price from three guests upward, and from six or seven it is the cheapest way to do this at all — around AED 114 each. It also buys you the one thing no shared tour can sell: finishing when you decide to.
Who should not book the dune bashing at all
Tell us and we will plan around it — you still come, and you still get the camp, the camel ride and the food.

Before You Go: Nine Things Worth Knowing
- Do not eat a heavy meal right before pickup. Dune bashing on a full stomach is a mistake people only make once. On the morning run breakfast is served at camp afterwards; on the evening run dinner comes after the driving.
- Closed shoes. Trainers, not sandals. Sand at 8:00 AM is comfortable; the boarding and the camel are easier in something that stays on your feet.
- Dress in layers. From about November through March the desert is genuinely cool early in the morning and again once the sun goes down. Bring something over your arms for whichever slot you book.
- Loose, modest clothing works best — comfortable for the vehicle and appropriate at camp. Long trousers are more comfortable than shorts on a camel.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, even in winter. The light off the sand is stronger than it looks.
- Small bag only. Large suitcases and luggage cannot travel in the vehicle.
- Tell your hotel front desk the night before that a driver is collecting you, and at what time.

Where does the desert safari take place?
At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres, which is considerably taller than the roadside dunes some operators use, and there is far less traffic on the sand.

Is hotel pickup included?
Yes on the AED 100 shared pickup, the AED 599 evening private car, and on the half day private vehicles at AED 799 and AED 800, covering the whole city including the Corniche, Al Maryah, Al Reem, Downtown, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Shabiya and the airport. The AED 50 package departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall, and AED 35 is self-drive using a GPS pin we send you.
Do I need a 4×4 for the self-drive option?
No. You drive on tarmac to a meeting point, so any standard car or rental reaches it comfortably. Our team takes over there in a proper 4×4 for the dune bashing.
How long is the dune bashing?
Around 40 to 45 minutes with short breaks. Tyres are deflated to roughly 15 psi first so they float on the sand. Intensity is adjustable at any point — tell your driver you want it gentle and it becomes a scenic drive.
Is dune bashing safe?
Yes with a licensed operator. Every passenger wears a seatbelt, vehicles are maintained and insured, drivers are trained specifically for dune driving, and vehicles travel in convoy so recovery is immediate. You can ask to stop at any time.
Can I do the safari without dune bashing?
Yes. Book the self-drive package and come straight to the camp, or ask for a direct transfer on a private car. You still get the sunset, camel ride, sandboarding, dinner and every show. This is the right choice for pregnant guests and anyone with back, neck or heart conditions.
What food is served at the camp?
A full BBQ buffet: salads and mezze including fattoush, hummus and Arabic bread; rice dishes, dal, pasta and mixed vegetable sabzi; chicken tikka, shish taouk, lamb seekh kebab and fish from the grill; Om Ali and fresh fruit for dessert. All 100% halal, with unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea.
Are vegetarian and special diets catered for?
Vegetarian options are always available as standard, and the whole buffet is halal. Vegan, Jain, gluten-free and allergy requirements can be accommodated with advance notice — tell us when you book and we will confirm what will be on the table.
Is alcohol available?
No. Alcohol is not served or permitted at our camp and guests should not bring their own. Unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea are included, and shisha is available at the camp.
What should I wear?
Loose, light-coloured clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and closed shoes such as trainers you do not mind filling with sand. From October to April bring a jacket — camp temperatures drop to 13 to 22 degrees after sunset. Avoid flip-flops, heels and skinny jeans.
Is the safari suitable for children?
Yes, from about age three. Ask for gentle dune bashing when you book, bring closed shoes and a spare set of clothes because sandboarding puts sand into everything, and pack a warm layer from November to March.
Can I add quad biking or a buggy?
Yes. Quad bikes are AED 100 single seater and AED 150 double, the Can-Am buggy is from AED 800 for 30 minutes, VIP majlis seating is +AED 50 per person, the falcon photo is AED 10–30 and professional photography starts at AED 50. Nothing is required and nothing is upsold under pressure at the camp.
