Yes, airside, by the airport train. Terminal 3 also connects internally — you can walk between B Gates and C Gates and take the train to A Gates. Terminal 2 is the exception and connects to neither.

On one ticket, usually yes. Thirty minutes between concourses against Emirates’ 60-minute gate deadline leaves margin. On separate tickets, no — you need immigration, baggage reclaim, customs and a fresh check-in against a 90-minute cut-off, and Emirates asks for three hours where its own baggage service is involved.

They are on the same airfield and linked by the airport train, so the practical answer is a train ride rather than a distance. Emirates budgets approximately 30 minutes between concourses. Terminal 2 is the one that is genuinely far, on the other side of the airport with no airside link.

Not if you are on one ticket moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 or between Terminal 3 concourses. Yes if you are on separate tickets, and yes if Terminal 2 is involved, because there is no airside route to it.

You leave the airport and take a road vehicle. Terminal 2 has no airside connection to Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 and no Metro station — the Red Line serves Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 only. Treat a Terminal 2 connection as a transfer between two separate airports.

Dubai Airports does not publish one. Its own transfers page tells you to consult your airline. Emirates publishes 90 minutes to get through passport control and security if you must re-check bags, and gate deadlines of 60 minutes in Economy and Premium Economy or 45 minutes in First and Business.

You become your own airline. You clear immigration, collect your bags, go through customs, transfer, and check in again — and if the first flight is late, nobody rebooks you. You also need a valid entry route into the UAE, because you cannot reach the second check-in desk without passing immigration.

Yes. Dubai Airports directs separate-ticket passengers to Marhaba Services at the transfer desk for baggage transfer assistance, and states that fees apply. Emirates also runs a baggage transfer service, but requires a connection of at least three hours.

Terminal 3, which contains Concourses A, B and C. Your boarding pass shows a gate rather than a concourse, so check which concourse that gate sits in — Concourse A is a train ride from B and C, not a walk.

Mostly Terminal 2, though some flydubai flights operate from Terminal 3. This matters more than any other terminal question at DXB, because Terminal 2 has no airside link to the others. Check your boarding pass rather than assuming.

Yes, an airport train runs airside. Dubai Airports describes taking it to reach A Gates within Terminal 3 and to reach Terminal 1’s D Gates. Emirates additionally runs a bus between Concourse A and Concourse C, which it describes as the faster option.

Only if you have a valid entry route — visa on arrival eligibility or a transit visa arranged before you fly. Airside transfers need no visa at all. If your gap is under four hours we would tell you not to bother; eight to twelve hours is where leaving genuinely pays off.

Follow the Transfer signs, not the Arrivals signs, if you are staying airside on one ticket. Arrivals takes you to immigration and baggage, which you only want if you are on separate tickets or leaving the airport. Dubai Airports has Guest Experience Ambassadors on the floor if you are unsure.

Dubai Airports says the D Gates at Terminal 1 are reached by a short airport train ride, and that inside Terminal 3 you walk between the B and C gates and take the train to the A gates (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Moving between Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 is a different job: Emirates directs connecting guests to its connection desks, bus connection area A6 in Concourse A, desk K in Concourse B and desk E in Concourse C, and describes that bus as landside (emirates.com, read 17 August). Follow the Connections signs and ask a Guest Experience Ambassador.

Emirates publishes a complimentary bus linking Concourse A and Concourse C inside Terminal 3, and shuttle buses to Terminals 1 and 2 leaving from its connection desks (emirates.com, read 17 August). flydubai simply tells connecting passengers to follow the Connections signs to the buses (flydubai.com, read 17 August). What no official source publishes is how often those buses run or how long each leg takes, so we will not print the confident figures you will see elsewhere. Dubai Airports itself asks transferring guests to consult their airline or a Guest Experience Ambassador on arrival (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August).

Emirates allows about thirty minutes to move between each Terminal 3 concourse, wants you through passport control and security ninety minutes before departure if you are collecting bags, and closes the gate sixty minutes ahead in Economy and Premium Economy, forty-five in First and Business (emirates.com, read 17 August). flydubai sets a hundred and twenty minute minimum between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 (flydubai.com, read 17 August). Dubai Airports separately asks departing guests to arrive three hours before the flight (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Build to the tightest of those numbers, never the loosest.

The UAE government states that transit visas are sponsored by UAE-based airlines and must be processed and approved before you enter the country (u.ae, read 17 August). Dubai Airports’ own help pages add that certain nationalities qualify for a visa on arrival when a transit runs beyond eight hours, and tell you to confirm with your airline and immigration (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). Those two read differently, and we trust u.ae for the rule because it is the government’s own platform. It matters because Emirates describes the inter-terminal bus as landside, so a terminal change can mean passport control.

flydubai sets a hundred and twenty minute minimum connection between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, tells you to follow the Connections signs to the buses, and says that if you have no onward boarding pass you collect one at a flydubai or Emirates connections desk (flydubai.com, read 17 August). Check which terminal you actually need first, because the airline says its Terminal 3 flight numbers carry four digits beginning with one, and it lists Colombo and Kathmandu as operating from both terminals. Your booking confirmation is the authority, not the terminal you used last time.

Emirates through-tags baggage when the whole journey is booked with Emirates; if the onward flight sits on a separate booking, you collect your bags and check them in again (emirates.com, read 17 August). Emirates also sells a baggage transfer service at ninety US dollars per person and requires at least a three-hour connection for it. flydubai is blunter about the airport pair: moving between Dubai International and Al Maktoum International you must clear customs and immigration and collect your checked bags (flydubai.com, read 17 August). Ask your airline before you land, not at the belt.

The Red Line serves Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 only, with stations running from five in the morning to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, to one in the morning on Friday, and from eight in the morning on Sunday (dubaiairports.ae and rta.ae, read 17 August). Silver nol fares are three, five or seven and a half dirhams by zone, and you may carry up to two pieces including hand luggage. Honestly it is a poor way to make a connection, because you leave the secure area, pass immigration and screen all over again.

Usually not, and we would rather lose the booking than pretend otherwise. If your bags are through-checked and you stay inside the airport, the airline’s own connection bus is the right answer and it costs you nothing (emirates.com, read 17 August). A private car pushes you landside through passport control and back through screening, adding risk rather than removing it. Dubai Taxi Company operates around the clock at every terminal, the meter starts at twenty-five dirhams and the rest is distance, and ride-hailing pickup points are signposted (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). For a short hop that meter will almost always beat anything pre-booked, including us, and we will tell you the same on WhatsApp. Pre-booking earns its keep on longer runs, late arrivals, families with car seats and heavy luggage, or when you want a named driver waiting. We never invent a figure for our own cars, so message us and we quote your exact route.

Separate tickets change everything. Emirates only through-tags bags booked on the Emirates journey; otherwise you reclaim and re-check them yourself (emirates.com, read 17 August). For a Dubai International to Al Maktoum International change, Dubai Airports says you clear passport control, collect your baggage, then take a taxi or the Metro to Ibn Battuta before the dedicated bus, and flydubai asks for four hours (dubaiairports.ae and flydubai.com, read 17 August). You must also be admissible to the UAE, so check the government platform for your nationality before you book (u.ae, read 17 August).

Read this before you book anything. Dubai Airports states plainly that there are no pick-up areas at Arrivals and directs you to the car park instead, while drop-off zones sit on the Departures level with time limits (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). So no driver can simply idle at the kerb waiting for you. For our own Abu Dhabi transfers we agree the meeting point with you on WhatsApp before you fly and stay in touch while you clear immigration, because the terminal, the exit number and the car park level matter far more than a name board.

Yes, and it is cheap enough to change how you spend the hours. Dubai Airports lists left luggage running around the clock at all three terminals: forty dirhams for standard bags and fifty for large or valuable ones at Terminals 1 and 2, thirty-five and forty at Terminal 3, each for twelve hours or less, with standard defined as twenty-one by twenty-four by eleven inches (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). There are also free showers at Terminal 3 near the A and B gates. Store the bags first, then decide what to do.

Possibly, and if you qualify it beats paying anyone, us included. Emirates runs Dubai Connect, which gives eligible guests on long layovers a complimentary hotel stay with meals, coach transfers both ways, and a complimentary forty-eight hour visa for eligible nationalities (emirates.com, read 17 August). Eligibility depends on your booking, the fare paid and what connections were available, and the airline asks you to complete it at least twelve hours before arrival, then meet the Dubai Connect desk. Check that first, because if it comes through you need no paid transfer and no paid tour at all.

Zayed International Airport works from one main terminal, so there is no terminal change to worry about once you arrive, and transfer desks sit just past the screening area (zayedinternationalairport.ae, read 17 August). The cheap way across is the Airport Express coach between Ibn Battuta Bus Station and the airport, roughly an hour and a half, running hourly with tickets sold at the Arrivals Hall counter. If you have children, luggage or an awkward hour, our private Land Cruiser is priced per vehicle so children add nothing, with no deposit and free cancellation twelve hours before pickup.

Ask the airline first: Dubai Airports routes assistance requests through your carrier, provides special lanes at every checkpoint and counter, offers a sunflower lanyard at the special assistance desk, and notes that buggy service is subject to availability and booked through the airline (dubaiairports.ae, read 17 August). It also confirms that People of Determination and guests with large strollers cannot use the Smart Gates. On our own Abu Dhabi transfers a foldable wheelchair travels in the Land Cruiser boot if you declare it at booking; powered or non-folding chairs we cannot carry, and we would rather say so now.
