Broadly yes, and the risks are ordinary rather than exotic. UAE rules require every passenger to wear a seat belt, including those sitting in the rear, and a front seat passenger must be at least 145 cm tall and not younger than ten (u.ae, read 17 August). At the camp the real hazards are the predictable ones: hot food, a fire show, animals and open sand after dark, all of which need a parent within arm’s reach rather than a posted rule. We own and built our own desert camp, so when something worries you we can change it rather than ask a landlord.

There is no single published national minimum for simply coming along, so the honest answer is that it depends on the activity, not the tour. Wadeema’s Law covers children up to eighteen and, usefully for parents, prohibits smoking in public and private vehicles where children are present (u.ae, read 17 August). We do not publish a minimum age for quad biking, and we would rather confirm it per booking than invent a figure, so ask us on WhatsApp before you promise a teenager a ride into the dunes.

Our private tours are priced per vehicle rather than per head, so children add nothing to the total and a family of five pays what a couple pays. There is no deposit and no booking fee; payment happens on the day. We do not print a fixed family figure here because pickup point and add-ons move it, so ask on WhatsApp for the exact number. Be honest about your group size, though: for two adults and one small child, a shared seat-in-vehicle operator will usually work out cheaper than any private booking, ours included.

Abu Dhabi gives you the bigger landscape. Experience Abu Dhabi describes the Empty Quarter, or Rub’ al Khali, as the largest desert in the emirate and the biggest continuous sand desert in the world, with the Liwa Oasis on its edge and Tel Moreeb rising over 300 metres at a 50 degree incline (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). For families that means quieter dunes and fewer convoys. If your hotel is on the Dubai side and the children are very young, though, a shorter local trip means less time strapped in a seat, which matters more than scenery.

November to March, according to the destination authority, which says cooler temperatures make exploring the dunes far more comfortable (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Outside that window, go early in the day. The same source recommends early morning for sandboarding at Liwa because desert temperatures get quite high as the day goes on, and advises light clothes, sunglasses, a hat and plenty of broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). With small children in high summer a morning departure is not a preference, it is the sensible choice.

The World Health Organization notes that children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation because of their skin and eye structure, and that sunburn in childhood leads to a higher risk of skin cancer later in life. Its advice is to seek shade, limit time in the midday sun, wear protective clothing and a broad-brimmed hat, use wraparound sunglasses giving 99 to 100 per cent UV-A and UV-B protection, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin (who.int, read 17 August). Carry more water than you think a child will drink.

Physically yes, sensibly it depends on one thing. UAE rules state that children up to four years of age must be provided with a child safety seat (u.ae, read 17 August), so the question is whether a compliant seat will be in the vehicle. We do not advertise child seats as a standard inclusion, so message us on WhatsApp before you book. If we cannot confirm the right seat for your baby’s size, book with an operator who guarantees one or bring your own. That is a far better outcome than arriving at pickup with an infant and no seat.

It can, and no operator can honestly promise otherwise. The drive is the part parents worry about and it is also the adjustable part: in a private vehicle the driver can take the ridges gently or skip the steepest sections altogether, which is the strongest practical argument for going private with children aboard. Say something at pickup rather than halfway up a dune, keep the previous meal light, and seat the sensitive passenger where they can see the horizon. Seat belts are required for everyone, rear seats included (u.ae, read 17 August). Skipping the bashing entirely is a valid choice.

On our private tours the question disappears, because pricing is per vehicle and children add nothing at all. Shared tours work differently, publishing a discounted child rate for a fixed age band, and for one adult with one child that structure is often the cheaper one. We will not pretend otherwise. Where a private vehicle earns its keep is larger families, prams and bags, and parents who want the timing bent around a nap. A WhatsApp message is enough. Inside that twelve hours, contact us anyway and we will do what we reasonably can. Before you book anywhere, read the cancellation window rather than the headline price, because several operators in this market run a much longer no-refund cut-off than ours and do not put it on the booking page.

A foldable wheelchair travels in the Land Cruiser boot if you declare it when booking. Powered or non-folding chairs cannot be carried, and we would rather tell you now than at your hotel door; if that is your situation, book an operator running a lift-equipped vehicle instead. For the rest of your trip, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre provides wheelchairs for people of determination and senior citizens on request from security personnel, and admission there is free (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).

Add closed shoes for sandboarding, a full change of clothes because sand travels, wipes, and a warm layer for after sunset when the temperature falls quickly. Keep medication in a bag that stays with you rather than in the boot. If a mosque visit follows on the same trip, women need a headscarf and everyone needs long, loose, ankle-length clothing (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).

More than you would expect, and you should use them. Admission to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free, though visitors must pre-book an online access pass, and children are welcome as long as they remain under constant parental supervision; personal photography is allowed (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). In Dubai, Emaar states that the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade (emaar.com, read 17 August). A family does not need a paid excursion every day, and the desert lands better as a highlight than as a fourth outing in a row.

With young children the honest split is this. Mornings are cooler and finish before the meltdown hour, and the destination authority itself points to early morning in the dunes because temperatures climb through the day (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). Evenings give you the sunset, the camp and dinner, but they end late and small children fade fast in the entertainment. If bedtime is non-negotiable, take the morning and eat at your hotel. On a private booking we can shape the timing around a nap, so ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming a fixed departure suits you.

Helmets are provided and compulsory for quad biking with us. We do not publish a minimum age, because it depends on the machine and the rider, so confirm it per booking on WhatsApp. Some operators do print an age, which is genuinely easier to plan around, and if that certainty matters most to you then use it. What we will not do is quote a number here that a guide then overrules in the sand. Younger children can sandboard instead, and Liwa offers gentler slopes as well as the giant dunes (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August).

The mosque publishes visiting hours of 9:00 to 20:30 from Monday to Sunday, with Friday split into 9:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30, last entry at 20:00, and visitors must pre-book an online access pass (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).
