Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The largest mosque in the UAE — 82 domes, 1,096 columns, the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627 m²) and seven Swarovski chandeliers. Entry is free, and so is the 45-minute guided cultural tour. If you do one thing in Abu Dhabi, do this. Arrive by 09:00.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Jean Nouvel’s 180-metre dome weighs about 7,500 tonnes yet appears to float, resting on four hidden piers. Eight layers of geometric stars scatter the famous “rain of light” across the plaza. The collection runs chronologically, not by civilisation — a genuinely unusual idea that works.
Qasr Al Watan
A working presidential palace, opened to the public in 2019. The Great Hall is a 100-metre cube beneath a 37-metre dome. The House of Knowledge holds rare manuscripts. In the evening there is a projection-mapped light show across the facade. The most underrated stop in the city.
Ferrari World
Home of Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster: 0 to 240 km/h in about 4.9 seconds, fast enough that riders wear protective goggles against airborne sand. The red roof covers ~200,000 m² and carries the largest Ferrari logo ever made. Allow 4–5 hours.
The Abu Dhabi Corniche
An eight-kilometre waterfront promenade with a Blue Flag public beach, cycling lanes, parks and cafés. The best free photograph in the city is from here in the late afternoon, when the light comes in low across the Gulf and the skyline turns orange.
Emirates Palace
Opened in 2005 at a reported US$3 billion, with 114 domes, 85 hectares of grounds and some 8,000 m² of gold leaf inside. You can walk into the public areas without being a guest — and yes, the gold-flake cappuccino is real, and it costs extra.
Warner Bros. World
The region’s largest indoor theme park — roughly 1.65 million square feet across six lands, fully air-conditioned. The correct answer to “what do we do with the children in August?” and worth every dirham in summer.
Heritage Village
A reconstructed pre-oil Emirati settlement on the breakwater, with the modern skyline directly behind it across the water. A working souq with metalworkers, potters and weavers. It is the only stop that explains all the others — and most tours skip it.
Observation Deck at 300
The 74th floor of Etihad Towers, 300 metres up — the highest publicly accessible viewpoint in Abu Dhabi. It is a lounge, not a gallery: you pay a minimum spend that is redeemable against food and drink. Best after sunset.

Add Umm Al Emarat Park at AED 10 and Qasr Al Hosn at AED 31.50, and you have a genuinely full, excellent day in Abu Dhabi for under AED 50 a head in entry fees.
The catch — and it is the whole point of this page. The free attractions are spread across 30 km. The mosque is 20 minutes from the Corniche and 30 from Yas Island, and there is no walkable route between any of them. Your real cost in Abu Dhabi is not tickets. It is transport. Budget accordingly.
The “free entry” claim to be sceptical of

If you have a single day — and most visitors, especially those coming from Dubai, do — this is the order that works. It is built around one fact: the mosque fills from 10:00.

Honest advice: Formula Rossa at Ferrari World is genuinely intense — 0 to 240 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with mandatory protective goggles. It carries height restrictions and some adults regret it. If your children are under ten, Warner Bros. World is the better booking, and it holds a mixed-age family for longer.
Things to do in Abu Dhabi at night
Abu Dhabi after dark is better than Abu Dhabi at midday, and hardly anyone plans for it.
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — open until 20:30, and the exterior lighting system shifts through phases of white and blue in tune with the lunar cycle. On white Macedonian marble the effect is extraordinary. Free.
- Qasr Al Watan — an evening projection-mapped light and sound show across the palace facade. AED 65.
- The Corniche — the city comes out after sunset when the heat drops. Cafés, cyclists, families. Free.
- Observation Deck at 300 — best after dark, with the skyline lit below you. AED 95 minimum spend, redeemable.
- Yas Marina Circuit — the F1 track is floodlit and runs night activities. AED 159.
- A night desert safari — dinner under the stars, an hour outside the city.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi in summer
From June to September, Abu Dhabi routinely exceeds 42°C, and humidity can push the felt temperature past 50°C. This is not a detail you can plan around casually — it reshapes the entire trip.
The rule is simple: go indoors between 11:00 and 17:00.

The summer day that actually works
Mosque at 09:00 (courtyard still bearable, and empty). Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers before 11:00. Then indoors from 11:00 to 17:00 — a theme park, or the Louvre, or Qasr Al Watan. Corniche after 18:00, when the temperature drops and the city comes out.
Move between all of it in an air-conditioned car. This is the season where a private vehicle stops being a comfort preference and becomes the difference between a holiday and an ordeal — and where an open-top hop-on hop-off bus is, frankly, a mistake.
What to do in Abu Dhabi on a layover
Abu Dhabi International is about 25–30 km from the city centre — roughly 30 minutes. That makes a layover genuinely usable, if you plan it properly.

The mosque is about 25 km from the airport, and it is open until 20:30 — so even an evening layover works. Bring your headscarf and long trousers in your hand luggage, because there is no time to be turned away at the gate and come back.

Abu Dhabi is not walkable. The attractions are spread across roughly 30 kilometres of island and mainland. There is no old town, no walkable cluster, and no strip where things sit together. This single fact will shape your trip more than any ticket price.

Your options, honestly compared
- Taxis. Fine, and plentiful. But across eight or nine stops in a day, the fares add up fast — and you will wait in the sun for each one.
- Hop-on hop-off bus. ~AED 275 per person for 24 hours. Good for solo travellers and couples; the waiting (30–45 min between buses) eats a single-day visit. See our bus tour vs private car comparison.
- Hire car. Reasonable if you are confident with UAE motorways and Abu Dhabi parking.
- Private car with driver. AED 699 for the whole vehicle (up to 6 guests) — which from three people up is cheaper than the bus and usually cheaper than the taxis.
We will say the unhelpful thing: if you are one or two people, taxis or the hop-on hop-off bus will probably cost you less than we do. Take them. From three people up, the arithmetic turns, and it turns hard.
Five mistakes visitors make in Abu Dhabi
1. Paying for “mosque entry”
It is free. Free entry, free guided tour, free parking, free abaya loan. Anyone charging you for it is charging you for nothing.
2. Assuming you can walk between things
The mosque is 30 minutes from Yas Island. There is no walkable route to anything. Look at the distance table above before you plan a single day.
3. Arriving at the mosque at 11am
Peak crowd, peak heat, and a forty-minute queue for a loaned abaya if you are dressed wrong. Arrive at 09:00. It costs nothing and it is the single best decision you will make.
4. Trying to fit a theme park into a culture day
Ferrari World needs 4–5 hours; Warner Bros. World needs a day. Pick one or the other, or take two days.
5. Visiting in July and planning outdoor activities
42°C+ with humidity past 50°C felt. Go indoors between 11:00 and 17:00, and do not book an open-top bus.

Everything you need to know before booking your Abu Dhabi desert safari.
What are the must-visit places in Abu Dhabi?
The five nobody regrets: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (free, but the dress code is enforced), Qasr Al Watan, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Corniche, and Yas Island for Ferrari World or Warner Bros World. If you only have one day, do the mosque first thing in the morning and the Corniche at sunset — the two bookends of the city.
What not to miss in Abu Dhabi?
The Grand Mosque at opening time, before the coaches arrive. Almost everyone visits it at 11am and queues. Beyond that, the thing most visitors miss entirely is the desert — Al Khatim is under an hour from the city centre, and the dunes at sunset are a completely different Abu Dhabi from the skyline.
What to see in Abu Dhabi city?
Inside the city itself: the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace, the Corniche, Heritage Village, Qasr Al Hosn and the Observation Deck at 300. Saadiyat Island adds the Louvre. Yas Island adds the theme parks. These sit on different islands, which is why a car matters more here than in most cities.
What is free in Abu Dhabi to visit?
Entry to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free. So are the Corniche and its public beach sections, Heritage Village, Wahat Al Karama, Umm Al Emarat Park grounds, the Mangrove boardwalk, Al Maryah Island promenade and the souks. You can build a genuinely full day in Abu Dhabi for the cost of transport alone.
Are 3 days enough for Abu Dhabi?
Three days is comfortable and covers the city properly. Day one for the cultural landmarks, day two for a theme park or the Louvre, day three for the desert or a day trip to Al Ain. One day is enough only for the headline sights, and you will be rushing between islands.
How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai?
Roughly 140 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes on the E11 in normal traffic. Allow closer to two hours if you are leaving Dubai in the morning peak or returning on a Sunday evening.
Is parking free in Abu Dhabi?
Mawaqif street parking is paid across most of the city centre during working days, and free on Sundays and public holidays. Rates and free periods are printed on every machine, so check the one you park at — enforcement is consistent and fines are issued quickly. Mall parking is generally free for the first few hours.
Do you tip in Abu Dhabi?
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. Around 10–15% in restaurants where no service charge has been added, a few dirhams for porters, and rounding up for taxi drivers is normal. Many bills already include a service charge, so check before adding more.
What is there to do on Yas Island?
Ferrari World, Warner Bros World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, the Yas Marina Circuit and Yas Mall are all on the one island. You cannot do more than one major park properly in a day — pick one and give it the full day rather than trying to split.
What is cheap to buy in Abu Dhabi?
Dates and Arabic sweets from the Dates Market, spices and oud from the souks, camel milk chocolate, and gold sold by weight rather than by piece. The souks are where prices are negotiable; the malls are not.

Do you arrange Abu Dhabi city tours as well as desert safaris?
Yes. Alongside our desert safaris we arrange Abu Dhabi city tours taking in Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Corniche, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and Louvre Abu Dhabi, plus day trips to Al Ain and Dubai. Ask us about combining a city tour with a desert safari for better value.
Can I combine a city tour with a desert safari on the same day?
Yes, and it is a popular combination. A morning or half-day city tour pairs well with an evening desert safari, which picks up around 3:00 to 3:30 PM. Message us with your dates and we will build a timing that works without rushing you.
How much does a desert safari cost if I add one?
Our desert safari prices are AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, AED 100 shared hotel pickup, AED 599 for a private 7-seater car and AED 800 for a private Land Cruiser. There is no booking fee and no deposit, and you pay on arrival.
What is included in the desert safari?
Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.
Where is your desert camp?
At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive.
What time does the evening desert safari run?
Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes on the AED 100 shared pickup and both private car options, covering the whole of Abu Dhabi city including the airport. The AED 50 option departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall.
What should I wear for the desert?
Loose, light-coloured clothing covering shoulders and knees, and closed shoes. Bring a jacket from October to April, when camp temperatures drop to 13 to 22 degrees after sunset. For the Grand Mosque the dress code is stricter — ankles and wrists covered plus a headscarf for women, long trousers for men.
Is the Grand Mosque dress code different from the desert?
Yes, and it catches people out. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque enforces its dress code, while the desert camp has no enforced code. If you are doing both on the same day, wear the mosque-compliant outfit with a layer you can remove once you reach the dunes.
How do I book?

Do you offer private tours?
Yes. A private car keeps your group alone in the vehicle with your own pickup time and pace. The private desert safari is AED 599 per car for up to seven guests, or AED 800 for the premium Land Cruiser.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. City tours are easy for all ages, and the desert safari suits children from about age three with gentle dune bashing on request.
What is the best time of year to visit?
November to March gives the most comfortable weather for both city sightseeing and the desert. October and April are excellent value. From May to September plan indoor attractions by day and a morning desert safari rather than an evening one.
Can you collect us from a cruise ship or the airport?
Yes. We collect from Abu Dhabi cruise terminal and Abu Dhabi International Airport as well as hotels and residences. For a tight port day or layover the morning safari usually fits better than the evening one.
Do you offer group and corporate bookings?
Yes. For five or more people a private car at AED 699 works out cheaper per head than individual pickups, and for larger groups we combine multiple vehicles. Send us your numbers and dates and we will work out the best combination.
What are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque visiting hours during Ramadan?
They change completely, and almost nobody publishes them. The Centre’s own visiting hours page gives two Ramadan patterns. For the first twenty days, Monday to Sunday runs 09:00 to 18:00 plus a late session 21:30 to 01:00, with Friday 14:30 to 18:00 plus the same 21:30 to 01:00 session. For the last ten days, it is 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Sunday and 14:30 to 18:00 on Friday, with no late session (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Check the live page before you travel, because Ramadan dates move with the moon.
Is the main prayer hall ever closed to visitors?
Yes, and it catches people out on a Friday. Abu Dhabi’s tourism board states the main prayer hall is closed to visitors between 12:00 and 15:00 on Fridays, which is narrower than the whole-mosque Friday split of 09:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30 published by the Centre (visitabudhabi.ae and szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). So a Friday afternoon arrival can get you inside the grounds but not into the hall everyone comes to see. If the prayer hall is your reason for going, avoid Friday midday entirely.
Is the Sura night tour the same as normal mosque entry?
No, and the difference matters to your wallet and your clock. Standard daytime visiting is free with a pre-booked online access pass and ends at 20:30, last entry 20:00. The Sura night tour is a separate product running 22:00 to 09:00, and its booking form carries a payment section, so it is paid rather than free (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). No price, session length or age limit is published anywhere we could read, so we will not print one — the Centre gives +971 2 4191919 for those details.

If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
