No, you do not need your passport — and here is why people think you do
Hatta is part of Dubai. It is an exclave, separated from the rest of the emirate by Sharjah and by Omani territory, which is exactly why the question keeps coming up. The old mountain road did clip Oman and travellers genuinely were turned back without a passport.
The modern route does not. The E44 Hatta Road runs entirely inside the UAE, and you drive from Dubai to Hatta and back without meeting a border post or showing a document to anyone. No visa, no passport, no stamp.
Bring your Emirates ID or a photo of your passport page if it makes you comfortable — it is sensible anywhere — but nothing on this day trip requires it.
You will still find forum posts and older blog articles telling you to carry a passport. They are describing a route that is no longer the one anybody drives. If a tour operator tells you a border crossing is involved, they are either using an unusual route or repeating something they have not checked.
How far is Hatta from Dubai?
About 130 kilometres from central Dubai, and Visit Dubai puts the drive at 90 minutes. In practice, leaving the city before the morning peak, ninety minutes is accurate. Leaving at nine on a working morning it is closer to two hours, which is the single strongest argument for the early start we recommend.
The road is the E44, dual carriageway nearly all the way. The last stretch climbs into the Hajar range and the landscape changes completely — from flat sand to grey rock in about ten minutes. It is the part of the drive people photograph.

A shorter version works perfectly well — dam, heritage village, home by two — and costs the same, because you are paying for the car and the driver rather than for a schedule.

What is not included, and is not included by anyone: kayak and pedal-boat hire at the dam, and everything at Hatta Wadi Hub — the zipline, the ropes course, archery, axe throwing and mountain-bike hire. These are all bought on site on the day.
We are not publishing figures for them because the operators change their rates and we have not been able to verify a current price we would stand behind. Any page quoting you an exact kayak price is either fresher than ours or guessing. Budget for them, ask at the jetty, and treat anyone’s published number as indicative.
Per car, not per person — what that means at Hatta
Coach day trips to Hatta are sold per seat. Ours is one price for the vehicle, which changes the arithmetic sharply once there are two of you.

For one or two people a shared coach will usually be cheaper, and we will say so if you ask. From four upwards the private car wins on money as well as on freedom.
When to go, and when not to
Hatta is a mountain destination, and the season matters more here than almost anywhere else in Dubai.

The other timing rule is the one nobody mentions: the wind. Hatta Dam sits in a valley that funnels air, and by late morning the surface that looks like glass at nine can be choppy. If kayaking is the reason you are going, be on the water early.
Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the dam car park fills. A Tuesday in January is close to perfect.
The midday closure nobody warns you about
Monday to Thursday the water activities at Hatta Dam shut between roughly 11 am and 3 pm. Turn up at noon on a Tuesday and the dam is beautiful and the kayak counter is closed.
Friday to Sunday they run straight through, roughly 7 am to 9 pm.

This is the practical reason our recommended departure is 7 am rather than a relaxed nine o’clock start. Leaving Dubai at seven puts you at the water around 8:45, inside the morning window, with the heritage village and lunch filling the closed hours and the Wadi Hub afterwards. Leave at nine and on a weekday you arrive into the shutdown.
The dam itself is always open
The viewpoint and the walk along the dam wall are accessible at any hour and cost nothing. It is only the boats that keep hours. If your day runs late, the late-afternoon light on the water is the better photograph anyway.
How long the drive really takes — the sources disagree
Worth being straight about, because the two figures you will find are not the same.

Both are right, at different times of day. Ninety minutes is what the road does when it is clear, which is what you get leaving central Dubai before about 7:30 am. From nine o’clock onwards, with traffic out of the city, two hours is the honest number. We plan on ninety minutes because we leave early; if you insist on a late start, budget two.
We would rather publish the disagreement than pick the flattering figure and have you miss the morning window because of it.
Two things every source agrees on
Swimming in the reservoir is not permitted. The water activities are kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards. Anyone telling you the dam is a swimming spot is wrong.
Life jackets are provided and worn by everyone on the water, and advance booking for the boats is recommended rather than required.
What is actually at Hatta
Hatta Dam
The reason most people come. A reservoir between grey mountains with water that reads as turquoise in daylight. Kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards are hired at the jetty. An hour is enough for most people; two if you want to reach the far end and back.
Hatta Heritage Village
A restored mountain settlement with the fort tower above it, built where it is because of the falaj irrigation channels that made this valley liveable. Free to enter, shaded, and the right thing to do in the middle of the day when the dam is at its hottest.
Hatta Wadi Hub
The adventure park: a 350-metre twin zipline, a high-ropes aerial course, archery, axe throwing and more than fifty kilometres of mountain-bike trail. Everything is ticketed individually on site. If you have teenagers, this is where the day disappears.
The quieter things
Hatta Hill Park for the view over the valley, the honeybee garden, the wadi pools when there has been rain, and the mountain viewpoints on the road out. None of them cost anything, and on a private trip you can stop at all of them.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits families who want a day out of the city, anyone who has already done the desert and the malls, photographers, and groups of four or more where the per-car price stops being a luxury.
It does not suit a solo traveller on a budget — take the coach. It does not suit anyone with only one day in Dubai, who should see Dubai. And it does not suit June, July or August, whatever the price.
It also does not suit a layover. Three hours of driving plus a day in the mountains does not fit a connection, and we would tell you that on WhatsApp rather than take the booking. If you are in transit, the desert safari from the airport or a city layover tour is the honest answer.

Practical things worth knowing
What to bring. Closed shoes for the rock, a swimsuit under your clothes if you plan to kayak, sunscreen, and more water than you expect to drink. There is shade at the heritage village and very little at the dam.
Modest dress. Hatta is a small mountain town rather than a resort. Covering shoulders and knees away from the water is the courteous norm.
Phone signal is good at the dam and patchy in the wadis. Your driver knows the area, which matters more here than in the city.
Payment. No deposit and no card details when you book. You pay the driver on the day. On-site activities are paid separately at each place, and most take cards.
