- Can you leave? Yes, if your passport gets a visa on arrival or you hold a transit visa — Etihad’s published fees are AED 55 (48-hour) and AED 216 (96-hour), applied for in advance, not at the gate.

Bands assume Zayed International (AUH) and an international onward flight. A domestic-style short buffer is not a thing here — we return you three hours before boarding, every time, and the plan is built backwards from that.
Can You Leave the Airport? The Two-Minute Version
Immigration at 2pm and immigration at 2am run the same rules. What matters is the passport you carry.

This is one of the four questions Google shows on this search, and the honest answer is: sometimes, under the airline’s conditions, and you must check them on Etihad’s own page before you count on it.
- Etihad has run a transit programme for roughly 10–24 hour connections (an airport-area hotel stay, booked in advance, minimum-fare and route conditions attached) and a stopover programme with up to two free hotel nights for longer stays booked through the airline.
- The conditions move — minimum fares, eligible routes, booking windows, age of the lead passenger — and pages summarising last year’s terms are one of the most common errors in the guides ranking beside this page.
- If you qualify, take it — a free bed is a free bed — and then spend the waking hours of the layover actually seeing the city. The two are not competitors; the hotel handles your sleep and we handle your hours.

The most popular budget answer on this search is real, and we are not going to pretend otherwise: a public bus runs between the airport and the city for a few dirhams, metered taxis from the rank cost far less than a tour, and one airport hotel is famous for free shuttles to the mosque and Yas Island for its guests. Should I book before I fly or after I land?
Before, ideally — send both flight numbers on WhatsApp and the plan is built and the mosque pass booked in advance. But we also take same-day bookings when a delay hands you a longer layover than you expected.
What if my flight is delayed and my layover shrinks?
The plan shrinks with it, or we cancel it — you owe nothing. We track the inbound flight, and because there is no deposit, a schedule change never costs you money. This is the single biggest difference from prepaid voucher tours.
