Day 1 — The Capital Classics

Morning at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (go at opening; dress modestly), then the two-minute hop to Wahat Al Karama for the tablets and the reflection pool. Lunch downtown, the Corniche for the skyline walk, a look at Emirates Palace and the Etihad Towers arch — and by 4pm you are in a 4×4 heading for the dunes: the evening desert safari (from AED 35) with sunset dune bashing, BBQ dinner and the three-show camp night. Day 3 — Yas Island: The Thrill Day

Pick your park — Ferrari World for the coasters, Warner Bros. World indoors with kids, SeaWorld or Yas Waterworld for the wet option — then Yas Marina for the evening. Doing more than one park in a day is possible on the multi-park passes but brutal in summer; two parks across two half-days beats three rushed.

Honestly, no — but it works if you pick a lane rather than a list. Take the Grand Mosque at opening, Qasr Al Watan in the afternoon, then either the Corniche at sunset or the desert. Adding Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island to the same day means hours in the car and nothing seen properly; the mosque alone deserves ninety minutes. If your only free day is a Monday, note that Louvre Abu Dhabi and BAPS Hindu Mandir are both closed (louvreabudhabi.ae and mandir.ae, read 17 August).
Do I need to book Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in advance? +
Yes. Admission is free, but a free online access pass must be pre-booked before you arrive; visitors turn up without one and are turned away. Ganga Aarti is at 19:30 on weekdays and at 18:45 and 19:30 at weekends and on holidays (mandir.ae, read 17 August). Plan it for late afternoon so you catch the aarti.

We would rather tell you the truth: from late May to September daytime temperatures reach roughly 45°C with humidity at 80 to 90 per cent (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). An outdoor-heavy itinerary is genuinely unpleasant then, and a midday desert trip is not something we would recommend to families with small children or anyone with a heart or respiratory condition. Summer works if you rebuild the plan indoors and keep the desert for late afternoon.
Should I hire a car, use taxis, or book a driver? +
If your itinerary stays inside the city, taxis will beat hiring us. Taxis in Abu Dhabi are described by the tourism authority as reasonably priced and plentiful, and buses cost one dirham a ride (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). A private vehicle earns its keep when you are covering ground — Saadiyat to Yas to the desert in a day, or a run out to Al Ain or Liwa — where waiting time and unfamiliar roads cost you more than the fare would.
Is an Abu Dhabi itinerary doable with young children? +
Yes, with two constraints. UAE law requires a child up to four years old to be in a child safety seat, and a front-seat passenger must be at least 145 cm tall and at least ten years old; every passenger including those in the rear must wear a seat belt, with a penalty of AED 400 and four black points (u.ae, read 17 August). What should I know about local etiquette before I go? +
Dress lightly but not skimpily; very short or tight clothing reads as disrespectful, and more conservative dress is recommended during Ramadan. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel bars and restaurants and you must be over 21. During Ramadan, non-Muslims are asked to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours (visitabudhabi.ae, read 17 August). English is widely spoken and the currency is the dirham.
What are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque visiting hours during Ramadan?

They change completely, and almost nobody publishes them. The Centre’s own visiting hours page gives two Ramadan patterns. For the first twenty days, Monday to Sunday runs 09:00 to 18:00 plus a late session 21:30 to 01:00, with Friday 14:30 to 18:00 plus the same 21:30 to 01:00 session. For the last ten days, it is 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Sunday and 14:30 to 18:00 on Friday, with no late session (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). Check the live page before you travel, because Ramadan dates move with the moon.

Is the main prayer hall ever closed to visitors?

Yes, and it catches people out on a Friday. Abu Dhabi’s tourism board states the main prayer hall is closed to visitors between 12:00 and 15:00 on Fridays, which is narrower than the whole-mosque Friday split of 09:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 20:30 published by the Centre (visitabudhabi.ae and szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August). So a Friday afternoon arrival can get you inside the grounds but not into the hall everyone comes to see. If the prayer hall is your reason for going, avoid Friday midday entirely.

Is the Sura night tour the same as normal mosque entry?

No, and the difference matters to your wallet and your clock. Standard daytime visiting is free with a pre-booked online access pass and ends at 20:30, last entry 20:00. The Sura night tour is a separate product running 22:00 to 09:00, and its booking form carries a payment section, so it is paid rather than free (szgmc.gov.ae, read 17 August).
