The short answer
- Yes, the free hotel is real: two nights, 3–4 star, Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, on one direction of a return Etihad trip. Recent website bookings confirm the hotel by email within minutes, and no card is taken at the desk.
- The fine print that bites: “up to 4 nights” means nights 3–4 are paid · no meals, no airport transfer · direct etihad.com bookings only — agents and OTAs are excluded · book on the website, not the app.
- If your hotel sticks at “booking in progress”: email abudhabistopover@etihad.com with your reference — the escalation route that actually works.
- What to do with the nights: day one the mosque and the city, day two the desert — our private per-car tours below are built for stopover guests, hotel pickup included.
What You Get Free — and What You Pay For
Etihad’s own page is marketing; the review blogs are one person’s trip. Here is the whole deal in one honest table, compiled from the program terms and recent traveller reports:
| Item | The truth |
|---|---|
| Free hotel nights | 2 nights genuinely free — room only, 3–4 star, Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, one direction of a return trip. |
| “Up to 4 nights” | Nights 3 and 4 are paid (sometimes discounted). Travellers who assumed four free nights were quoted about $250 per person for the extras. |
| Hotel standard | Comfortable 3–4 star city hotels — pool and gym common. The old luxury-resort tier is now mostly a paid upgrade. |
| Meals | None. No breakfast on the free tier. |
| Airport transfer | Not included. A free Experience Abu Dhabi shuttle bus runs set routes for stopover guests; taxis are metered; we run private pickups. |
| Stopover Pass | Free perks pass, up to 15% off attractions — claim it at theabudhabipass.com after booking. |
| Who qualifies | Direct etihad.com bookings connecting through Abu Dhabi. Agent and OTA tickets are excluded. |
| Visa | Visa on arrival for eligible passports; otherwise AED 55 (48h) / AED 216 (96h) transit visa, arranged in advance. |
Put a number on it: two nights in a comparable Abu Dhabi 4-star typically costs AED 600–1,000. If you were flying Etihad anyway, that is the value you are banking — real, but not unlimited, and worth exactly the fine print above.
Can You Leave the Airport? The Two-Minute Version
Immigration at 2pm and immigration at 2am run the same rules. What matters is the passport you carry.
- Visa on arrival nationalities walk out after a queue — no paperwork before flying.
- Everyone else needs a transit visa arranged in advance. The fees Etihad publishes are AED 55 for 48 hours and AED 216 for 96 hours — single entry, used within 30 days of issue, not extendable, roughly four business days to process. Several widely-shared guides still say the 48-hour visa is free; the airline’s own fee table says otherwise.
- You need a confirmed onward ticket to a third destination and six months of passport validity.
We are a tour operator, not a visa agency — we take no visa fees and promise no approvals. The full nationality-by-nationality breakdown, including where other guides get the numbers wrong, is on our Abu Dhabi transit visa page. Reconfirm your own eligibility with the airline before you fly.
What the Etihad Stopover Program Actually Is
An Etihad stopover means you break your journey in Abu Dhabi for more than 24 hours — anything from one to four nights — instead of connecting straight through. The program’s pitch is simple: book your Etihad flights through Abu Dhabi and the airline gives you two hotel nights free, in Abu Dhabi city or Al Ain, on one direction of your trip.
The free stay is a room-only booking in a 3–4 star hotel from Etihad’s partner list, confirmed by voucher before you fly. Alongside it you can claim a free Stopover Pass worth up to 15% off attractions and tours. What the program is not: it is not four free nights, not a both-directions perk, not available on agent bookings, and it includes no meals and no airport transfer — every one of those is covered honestly in the tables below.
If your break is under 24 hours you are on the wrong page — that is a layover, the hotel program does not apply, and our Abu Dhabi layover tour guide is the page you want.
How to Book It, Step by Step — on the Website, Not the App
The single biggest split between happy and furious travellers is where they booked. Website bookings let you pick the hotel during checkout and confirm fast; app bookings push the hotel to a separate site afterwards, which is where things stall.
| Step | What to do | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Book a return Etihad flight connecting in Abu Dhabi, directly on etihad.com — desktop or mobile browser. | Agent, OTA and app bookings are where eligibility problems start. |
| 2 | Choose the stopover option at checkout and pick your hotel from the list (expect a short list of 3–4 star options). | One direction only — outbound or return. The system will not give both. |
| 3 | Wait for the hotel confirmation email — on clean website bookings it arrives within minutes, not days. | Still “in progress” after a day? Email abudhabistopover@etihad.com with your reference now, not at the airport. |
| 4 | Print or save the voucher and show it at hotel check-in with your boarding pass. No card required for the free nights. | Extras — meals, minibar, late checkout — are on you. |
Booking window: the program’s terms want the stopover arranged at least 3 days before travel, and hotels genuinely do sell out around events like the Grand Prix — add it the day you book the flight.
Abu Dhabi or Al Ain — Which Free Stay to Pick
Etihad offers the free nights in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. For a first stopover the answer is Abu Dhabi: the mosque, the Corniche, Yas Island and the desert are all within reach, and tour pickup is simple. Pick Al Ain only if you have done Abu Dhabi before and want the garden-city pace — oasis walks, Jebel Hafeet and the camel market — and accept that it sits about 90 minutes inland, so you spend more of your free stay on the road.
Where It Goes Wrong — Real Traveller Reports, and the Fix for Each
The program has a mixed reputation online for a reason. We read the complaint threads so you do not have to. Every failure pattern travellers report, with the working fix:
| The trap | What happens | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Hotel booking in progress” limbo | You picked a hotel, but no confirmation email arrives — days or weeks pass. | Email abudhabistopover@etihad.com with your reference. Travellers who escalated there got their free hotel; the ones who waited on chat or Instagram support often did not. |
| The “up to 4 nights free” misread | Travellers selected 4 nights, then were quoted around $250 per person for the extra nights near departure. | Treat it as 2 nights free, full stop. Nights three and four are paid or discounted — decide about them with real prices in front of you. |
| The pre-dawn departure trap | A 2:30 AM onward flight can make the system count an extra hotel night — and flag the whole booking ineligible. | Check what the stopover tool counts before paying. If it miscounts, use the 24-hour free-cancellation window on your ticket. |
| Fee charged, then “not eligible” | A small stopover fee is taken at booking, the site later says you are ineligible, and the fee is not refunded on cancellation. | Book direct on the website, screenshot every step of the offer, and dispute promptly if charged for something not delivered. |
| “Hotels fully booked” | Availability is not always checked live at flight booking, so a hotel you selected can later be refused. | Book the stopover as early as possible — the terms want at least 3 days’ notice — and prefer refundable fares if the free hotel is the reason you chose Etihad. |
Balance matters: plenty of recent travellers report the fixed process working smoothly — hotel confirmed within ten minutes of a website booking, no card at the desk, an upgrade on arrival. The pattern is clear: direct website bookings confirm; app and agent bookings struggle.
Is the Etihad Stopover Worth It? The Honest Verdict
| You are… | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Already flying Etihad through Abu Dhabi anyway | Yes — take it. Two free hotel nights on a route you were flying regardless is real money saved, and it breaks up a long-haul brutally well for jet lag. |
| Choosing Etihad because of the free hotel | Only on a refundable fare. If the hotel fails to confirm, you want an exit. The room is a 3–4 star double worth roughly AED 300–500 a night — price that against the fare difference. |
| Booking through a travel agent or OTA | No — you are excluded. The program requires a direct etihad.com booking. Do not plan around a hotel you cannot get. |
| On a tight pre-dawn onward connection | Check the night-count first. Departures between midnight and dawn can add a phantom hotel night and void eligibility. |
Our position as a licensed Abu Dhabi operator: the free hotel is real, the city more than earns two nights, and the program’s problems are booking-flow problems, not destination problems. Follow the steps above and the odds are firmly on your side.
Your Two Free Nights, Planned
Day one, city: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the morning light, the Corniche for the afternoon, Qasr Al Watan or Louvre Abu Dhabi before dinner. Day two, desert: a private safari — dune bashing, a camel ride, sandboarding and a sunset photo stop — back at your hotel by night. Both days work from every stopover hotel on Etihad’s list, and our cars collect from the lobby.
Want the full hour-by-hour versions, including 24, 48 and 72-hour plans? Our Abu Dhabi stopover guide has all three, plus hotel-area advice and honest costs. For the tours themselves, the per-car packages above are priced for stopover groups — one price for up to seven guests, hotel pickup included.

Etihad Stopover Questions, Answered
Is the Etihad stopover really free?
Yes — two hotel nights are genuinely free when it works, and recent travellers report hotel confirmations arriving within minutes of booking on etihad.com. You do not leave a card at the desk. What is not free: nights three and four (paid or discounted), meals, and airport transfers.
How many free nights do you get with the Etihad stopover?
Two nights, in a 3–4 star hotel, on one direction of your journey only — outbound or return, not both. The “up to 4 nights” banner means you can extend to four nights, but nights three and four are charged.
How do I book the Etihad free stopover?
Book a return Etihad flight connecting through Abu Dhabi directly on etihad.com, choose the stopover option during checkout, and pick your hotel from the list shown. A voucher is emailed after the hotel confirms; you present it at check-in with your boarding pass.
Should I book the stopover on the Etihad app or website?
The website. Travellers report the app does not let you select a hotel during booking — you are pushed to the stopover site afterwards, which is where confirmations get stuck. Website bookings routinely confirm the hotel by email within minutes.
What hotels does Etihad give you on the stopover?
A short list — typically around four options at the free tier, comfortable 3–4 star city properties. The luxury 4–5 star names you may have read about in older posts are now largely reserved for paid upgrades.
Is breakfast included in the Etihad stopover hotel?
No. The free stay is room-only. Budget for meals, or eat near your hotel — Abu Dhabi cafés and casual restaurants are good value by Gulf standards.
Does Etihad include airport transfers with the stopover?
No private transfer is included. There is a complimentary Experience Abu Dhabi shuttle bus on set routes for stopover guests, public buses cost a few dirhams, and taxis are metered. We also run private airport pickups if you want your hours to count. If you are arranging your own ride, our Abu Dhabi airport taxi guide sets out what the meter and the flat fares actually look like.
What is the Etihad Stopover Pass?
A free perks pass you claim at theabudhabipass.com after booking a stopover. It gives up to 15% off major attractions, theme parks and tours. Claim it — it costs nothing — but compare final prices anyway.
Can I take the stopover in both directions?
No. The free hotel applies to one leg of a return journey — on your way out or on your way back. Choose the direction where a two-night break helps most with jet lag.
My Etihad hotel still says “booking in progress”. What do I do?
Do not wait silently — this is the single most reported failure. Email abudhabistopover@etihad.com with your booking reference, and push before your travel date. If you booked on the website and picked a hotel at checkout, confirmation usually arrives fast; app and agent bookings are where travellers report limbo.
Does the Etihad stopover work on travel-agent or OTA bookings?
No — the program requires a direct etihad.com booking. Tickets issued through agents or third-party sites are excluded, which is one of the most common reasons travellers are told they are “not eligible”.
Do I need a visa for an Etihad stopover in Abu Dhabi?
If your passport gets UAE visa on arrival, no extra paperwork. If not, Etihad’s published transit visa fees are AED 55 (48-hour) and AED 216 (96-hour), applied for in advance — see our transit visa guide for the honest per-nationality picture.
What is the difference between an Etihad layover and a stopover?
Under 24 hours in Abu Dhabi is a layover — you tour from the airport and the free hotel program does not apply. 24 hours to 4 nights is a stopover, which is what the free hotel covers.
What should I do with two free nights in Abu Dhabi?
Day one: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Corniche and Qasr Al Watan. Day two: a private desert safari — dune bashing, camel ride and sandboarding — or Yas Island. Our per-car tours above are built exactly for stopover guests, priced per vehicle, never per person.
Does Etihad give a hotel for a long layover (same-day)?
No — the free nights are part of the stopover programme, which needs an overnight stay built into your ticket. A same-day layover, however long, gets no free hotel: your options are the paid AUHotel airside (6/12/24-hour blocks), a Pearl Lounge pass, or leaving the airport — with 6+ daytime hours our per-car city tour from AED 899 (≈$245) covers the mosque and Corniche and returns you three hours before boarding.
Which airlines offer free stopover hotels like Etihad?
A few Gulf and hub carriers run stopover programmes — Qatar Airways (Doha, paid packages), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul, free nights on qualifying long connections) and Icelandair (free Reykjavik stopover, hotel not included) are the usual comparisons; check each airline’s own page for current terms. Etihad’s two genuinely free hotel nights in Abu Dhabi is among the most generous — which is why the booking traps on this page are worth five minutes before you commit.

If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
