To leave Zayed International you must clear immigration, which means either visa-on-arrival eligibility or a pre-arranged transit visa. Per Etihad’s own fees table the 48-hour transit visa is AED 55 and the 96-hour is AED 216 — single entry, valid for entry within 30 days, not extendable, roughly four business days to process. It is applied for through Etihad and is valid for entry at Abu Dhabi only.

Do You Actually Need an Abu Dhabi Transit Visa?
Most people who search this do not need one, and the ones who do often find out too late. The whole question turns on a single distinction that airline websites bury: staying airside is not the same as entering the UAE.

Third-party application channels add their own service charge and VAT on top of the airline fee, which is why you will see wildly different totals quoted. If a website advertises a price, check whether it is the airline fee, the airline fee plus their commission, or a guess.
Where the Other Guides Get It Wrong

The rule we now follow, and suggest you do too: a visa fee is only real if it comes from the airline’s or the government’s own page, read on the day you are applying. Everything else — including this page — is a summary that can age.
48-Hour or 96-Hour — Which One Fits Your Layover?
The choice is not about price, it is about what you can physically do in the window, and the window starts when the officer stamps you in.

If your break is longer than four days, or the UAE is your destination rather than a stop en route, a transit visa is the wrong product — a tourist visa is. And if you are on an Etihad return ticket, check the stopover programme first: it can include two complimentary hotel nights, which changes the maths entirely.

How to Apply — and the Two Rules People Miss
Applications go through Etihad, which sponsors the visa; the approval itself comes from the UAE federal authority (ICP), not the airline. Two conditions are reported to catch people out repeatedly:
1. The flight must be Etihad-operated, not a codeshare — a flight sold under Etihad’s code but flown by a partner is commonly reported as ineligible. 2. The ticket number is expected to begin with 607, Etihad’s own ticketing prefix. If you booked through a partner airline and your ticket does not start with 607, check before you pay.
The sequence itself is straightforward: confirm you actually need the visa → check your visa-on-arrival eligibility first, because it may make the whole thing unnecessary → choose 48 or 96 hours honestly → prepare passport scan, photo and both tickets → submit and pay on Etihad’s portal → wait about four business days → carry a printed and a digital copy.
Why Transit Visa Applications Get Rejected
Rejections are overwhelmingly administrative rather than personal, and the fee is not refunded — so it is worth reading this list twice. Commonly reported causes:
A passport scan with a field cut off or out of focus · a photo that misses the stated format, background or size · a codeshare flight, or a ticket number not beginning with 607 · a layover shorter than the practical minimum · no confirmed onward ticket to a third country · missing hotel or host documents when the transit exceeds 24 hours · a diplomatic or service passport submitted through the standard channel instead of the diplomatic route or the UAE embassy · an unaccompanied minor or student, whom the airline does not sponsor · a handwritten passport.
You can normally reapply immediately once the cause is fixed — but the fee is charged again, which is the real reason to get the documents right the first time.
Indian Passport Holders — Read This Before You Pay
This is the single most-searched version of the question, and the answer usually is you may not need a transit visa at all.
Indian passport holders with a normal passport valid at least six months have been eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival when holding a valid visa or residence permit from a qualifying country. Emirates’ own published information lists the qualifying documents as a US green card or valid US visa; a UK residence permit or any valid UK visa including an e-Visa; a residence permit or valid visa from an EU member state; or a residence permit from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea or Singapore — and states a fee of USD 63 for that entry permit.
Eligibility list and USD 63 fee per Emirates’ UAE visa information page (pre-approved visas for Indian nationals). Note that some visa-service sites quote AED 100 instead; the figures conflict, so confirm with your own airline before travel.
If you do not qualify for visa on arrival and you want to leave the airport, the transit visa through Etihad is the route — AED 55 or AED 216 as above. If you are staying airside, none of this applies.
Pakistani Passport Holders
Pakistani passport holders generally need entry permission arranged before travel rather than on arrival, so if the plan is to leave Zayed International, apply for the transit visa early — four business days is the stated processing time and rejections cost the fee. Travellers report that holding a US green card or a third-country visa does not reliably produce a visa on arrival, so do not build a stopover around that assumption. A national ID card is among the additional documents airlines list for Pakistani applicants on UAE visa forms. Verify your own case with Etihad or ICP; nationality-based eligibility is assessed individually and is not published as a fixed public list.
What Is the “3,000 Dirham Rule”, and Does It Apply to Transit?
This question appears in Google’s own “people also ask” box for transit visas, and almost nobody answers it properly — partly because two completely different things share the number.
The one travellers mean: an informally applied expectation that a visitor arriving on a short-term tourist or visit visa can show access to funds — commonly cited as around AED 3,000 — in cash, card or bank access, if an immigration officer asks. It is a proof-of-means check rather than a published fee, it is applied at the officer’s discretion, and comparison tables published by UAE insurance and travel sites list it as not applicable to transit visas.
The one that is a different rule entirely: AED 3,000 also appears as a salary threshold in UAE sponsorship rules — for a resident sponsoring family members, where housing is provided. That has nothing to do with transiting through Abu Dhabi.
Reported by UAE travel-insurance and visa-service publishers rather than stated as a published rule on a government page; we could not source an official ICP page setting an AED 3,000 requirement. Carry a working card and you will not think about it again.
Can You Go to Dubai on an Abu Dhabi Transit Visa?
Yes — the transit visa is a federal UAE permission, not an emirate-specific one, so once you are stamped in at Abu Dhabi you may travel to Dubai by road. Two limits matter: your 48 or 96 hours covers all time in the country wherever you spend it, and the visa is valid for entry at Abu Dhabi — you cannot use it to arrive through Dubai International.
The practical question is whether you should. Abu Dhabi to Dubai is roughly 130 km and 75–90 minutes each way, so a Dubai excursion costs three hours of driving before you see anything. On a 48-hour visa with a real night’s sleep in it, that is survivable; on a 10-hour layover it is the wrong call, and Abu Dhabi’s own icons are 25–35 minutes from the terminal.
And the reverse: does a Dubai visa work for Abu Dhabi?
A UAE tourist or visit visa is federal too, so it is valid across the emirates — but a Dubai-issued transit visa is tied to entry at Dubai, just as the Abu Dhabi one is tied to AUH. Note the two are processed by different authorities: Abu Dhabi through ICP, Dubai through GDRFA. And the fees differ — Emirates publishes its 48-hour transit visa at USD 10 and its 96-hour at USD 49 for travel outbound from Dubai on Emirates tickets, against Etihad’s AED 55 and AED 216 at Abu Dhabi. Same country, different products; do not assume a figure you read for Dubai applies to your Abu Dhabi connection.

Overstaying — What It Costs
Your permitted stay ends 48 or 96 hours after the stamp, and the smart gates at Zayed International flag an overstay automatically on exit. Visa-service publishers report that ICP moved to a unified fine of AED 50 per day across the UAE in early 2026, and that the previous grace period was removed, meaning the fine begins the day after your permission expires; an exit permit costing a few hundred dirhams is reported for overstays beyond 30 days.

The practical protection is simpler than the arithmetic: build your day around being back at the terminal two hours before departure, and use a driver who watches your flight rather than a taxi you have to find.
You Got the Visa. Now Use the Hours Properly.
This is the part the visa sites skip, and it is the only part we are actually qualified to sell. Once you are through immigration, the clock is real: 45–60 minutes from landing to standing outside, and two hours back at the terminal before departure. What is left is your day.

The test is simple. Is the UAE a stop on the way to somewhere else, with a confirmed ticket out to a third country? Then it is a transit visa. Is the UAE where you are actually going, or are you returning to the country you came from? Then it is a tourist visa, and a transit visa will not do — the third-destination ticket is a hard requirement, not a formality.
The Clock, Worked Through With Real Numbers
Two travellers, the same visa, different outcomes — because one of them did the arithmetic before booking.
Case A — 9-hour layover, lands 08:00
Stamped in and outside the terminal by about 09:00. Onward flight 17:00, so back at the terminal by 15:00. Six hours of real time. That comfortably covers the Grand Mosque, Wahat Al Karama across the road, a Corniche stop and lunch — and the mosque costs nothing. A 48-hour visa at AED 55 buys a genuinely good day.
Case B — 6-hour layover, lands 23:30
Outside by about 00:30. Onward flight 05:30, so back by 03:30. Three hours, in the middle of the night, with the mosque closed. The visa fee and the immigration queue buy a drive past floodlit buildings. Our honest advice for Case B: keep the AED 55, buy lounge access or a short transit-hotel package, and sleep. That is not a sales pitch against ourselves — it is the difference between a guest who books again and one who does not.
If the Visa Is Late, Refused, or You Change Your Mind
Late: processing is stated as around four business days and it stretches over holidays. There is no reliable same-day route, so a visa applied for the night before will not save a stopover. If it has not arrived, treat the layover as airside and plan the terminal instead — our Terminal A guide covers lounges, luggage storage and the transit hotel.
Refused: the fee is not returned. You can normally reapply straight away once the cause is fixed, but fix it properly — resubmitting the same blurred passport scan produces the same result.
Changed your mind: the visa simply expires at the end of its 30-day entry window and the fee is gone. This is the reason we hold tour bookings without a deposit: if your visa does not come through, you cancel with one WhatsApp message and pay nothing. Nobody should be out of pocket on our side for a decision immigration made.

You also could not use one: after immigration and the two-hour check-in buffer there would be no time outside the terminal.
Do I need a transit visa for a 7 or 8 hour layover?
Only if you intend to leave the airport. Guidance commonly cited by the airline and visa channels puts the practical minimum layover for a transit visa at around 8 hours, so a 7-hour connection sits right on the edge. If you stay airside, no visa. If you want to exit and your passport is not visa-on-arrival eligible, apply in advance — about four business days. Can I leave Abu Dhabi airport during a layover?

Almost always paperwork: a passport scan with a field cut off or blurred, a photo that misses the stated format or background, a codeshare rather than an Etihad-operated flight, a ticket number not beginning with 607, no confirmed onward ticket to a third country, missing hotel documents on a transit over 24 hours, a handwritten passport, or an unaccompanied minor or student, whom the airline does not sponsor. The fee is not refunded, so check the documents twice.
Can I apply for the Abu Dhabi transit visa myself?
Yes — applications are submitted through Etihad’s own visa portal, and the approval comes from the UAE federal authority rather than the airline. Third-party visa services will do it for you and add a service fee. We are a tour operator and do not process visas: we will not take a visa fee from you or promise an approval.
What happens to my visa if my flight is cancelled?
The visa remains valid for entry only within its 30-day window and the fee is not refundable, so a cancellation that pushes you outside that window means applying and paying again. If a delay is the airline’s responsibility and they arrange accommodation, Etihad typically handles the entry arrangements rather than you applying yourself.
Do I need a visa if I am only changing planes and my bags are checked through?
No, in the normal case. On a single ticket with baggage through-checked to your final destination you stay airside, clear a transfer security check and board — no immigration, no visa. It changes if you are on separate tickets and must collect and re-check your bags, because that usually means clearing immigration.
Is it worth getting a transit visa just to see Abu Dhabi?
If you have six hours or more outside the terminal, and the visa costs AED 55, yes — the Grand Mosque alone is free and 25 minutes from the airport. Below about five hours of real free time, pay for a lounge instead and keep the visa fee. We will tell you which side of that line your flight numbers fall on before you book anything with us.

What everyone actually charges — and what it means for your group
Most operators quote per person. We quote per vehicle. That difference is invisible when you are travelling alone and decisive when you are four. These are the advertised rates of the operators currently on page one, read off their own booking pages.

The honest reading: if you are travelling as a couple, a shared seat is cheaper than our private car and we will tell you so. From three guests upward the per-car price wins, and from four it is not close. You are also not sharing a coach with forty strangers, not waiting at four hotel pickups before you start, and not tied to someone else’s schedule at the mosque.
Rates were read directly from each operator’s public booking page in July. Operators are unnamed deliberately — prices change, and this is a comparison of pricing models, not an attack on anyone. Check them yourself before you book.
If we have to cancel, what happens?
A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.
If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.
If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.
This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
