Abu Dhabi to Dubai: Every Option, With the Real Price

Taxi: AED 260–330. Bus: AED 21. Uber: AED 300–450+. Those are the real numbers, and we are not going to hide the cheap one from you. If you are travelling alone with one bag, take the E101 bus. A private car earns its price when there are three of you, when you have luggage, or when you need the driver to wait — not otherwise. Abu Dhabi to Dubai Taxi Fare: What It Actually Costs

A metered taxi from Abu Dhabi to Dubai costs AED 250–320, plus roughly AED 8 in Salik tolls — around AED 260–330 one way. The route is 140–150 km and takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. Rush hour can push the meter up by AED 50 or more, and a pickup at Dubai International starts on the RTA airport tariff of AED 20–25 rather than the AED 5 road-pickup rate.

That is the number, and it is the number people are actually searching for. Most pages that rank for this question bury it under three hundred words of “the UAE is a land of contrasts” before telling you anything useful. So it is at the top of this page instead.

But the fare on its own is misleading, because it is a range, and the range is wide for a reason. Two people making the identical journey on the same day can pay AED 255 and AED 330. Here is what moves the number:

What changes your Abu Dhabi → Dubai taxi fare
FactorEffect on the fareCan you control it?
Traffic+AED 50 or more at rush hourYes — travel 10am–2pm or after 7pm.
Salik tolls+~AED 8, added on top of the meterNo. Fixed cost of the route.
DXB airport pickup+AED 25 surcharge on standard taxisNo, if you are starting at the airport.
Exact pickup and drop-off pointsCan swing the fare by AED 40–60Partly. Downtown-to-downtown is the baseline.
Which taxi you flagStreet taxi is cheapest; app-hailed is dearerYes.

The honest headline: budget AED 300 and you will rarely be unpleasantly surprised. Budget AED 250 and you might be.

Before You Book Anything: The Bus Costs AED 21

The E101 bus from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station costs AED 21, runs roughly every 30 minutes, and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes — only around eight minutes slower than a taxi. That means a taxi costs you roughly twelve times more to save eight minutes. If you are one or two people with light luggage, take the bus.

We sell private cars. We make nothing when you take the bus. We are telling you anyway, because the alternative is writing a page that pretends the cheapest, most sensible option for a solo traveller does not exist — and you would find out within five minutes of arriving and never trust another word on this site.

The E101 route costs only AED 21, takes 1 hour 30 minutes, and runs every 30 minutes from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station.

    — Published intercity bus fare data

When the bus is genuinely the right answer

    • You are travelling alone or as a couple. There is no group discount on a taxi — you pay the full meter whether the car has one person in it or four. The bus charges per head, and at AED 21 a head it is unbeatable.
    • You have a backpack or a cabin bag. Manageable.
    • You are not in a hurry. Eight minutes. That is the entire time penalty.
    • You are on a budget. AED 21 versus AED 300 is not a close call.

When the bus is the wrong answer

    • You have real luggage. Luggage space is limited and you will be wrestling suitcases on and off. This is the most common reason people regret the bus.
    • You need door-to-door. The bus drops you at a station — typically Ibn Battuta — not at your hotel. You then need a local taxi at the far end, which erodes the saving.
    • You are three or more people. Three bus tickets is AED 63, which is still cheaper — but now you are three people plus bags on public transport, and a private car starts to make sense on comfort rather than pure cost.
    • You are travelling with children, elderly relatives, or on a tight schedule.

The Abu Dhabi to Dubai corridor — 140 to 150 km on the E11 Sheikh Zayed Road

Why Uber and Careem Cost More on This Route, Not Less

Uber and Careem typically run AED 300–450+ from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, against AED 250–320 for a metered street taxi. On this corridor, ride-hailing is more expensive than a taxi — the opposite of what most travellers expect — and surge pricing at peak times widens the gap further.

This catches people out because in a lot of the world, Uber undercuts the local taxi. In the UAE it does not, particularly on long intercity runs. What you are actually paying the premium for is cashless payment, a tracked route, and a fixed quote before you get in — which are real benefits, just not financial ones.

There is a second issue that does not show up in the price: drivers sometimes decline cross-emirate trips. A 150 km one-way run leaves the driver with a long empty return leg, and not every driver wants it. You can find yourself cancelled on, twice, while standing outside with your bags.

The Hidden Costs Nobody Quotes You

Every fare you read online is the meter. The meter is not the bill. Here is everything that gets added on top, in the order you will meet it:

Add-ons that are not in the quoted fare
    Add-onCostWhen it applies
Salik tolls~AED 8Every trip. Charged at the end.
DXB airport pickup feeAED 25Standard taxis picking up at Dubai International.
Rush-hour meter creep+AED 50 or more7–9am toward Abu Dhabi; 5–7pm back to Dubai.
The return journeyAnother AED 260–330If you are coming back the same day. This is the big one.
A local taxi at the far endAED 20–50If you took the bus and now need to reach your hotel.
Surge pricingVariable, can be steepUber/Careem at peak.
The single most expensive assumption travellers make is that the fare is one-way money. If you are going to Dubai for the day and coming back, the taxi option is not AED 300 — it is AED 500–660, and neither car waits for you. That is the number to compare a private car against, not the one-way fare.

Read that table honestly and the conclusion is not “always book a private car.” It is: one person, light bag, one way → bus. Two or three people, one way, with bags → taxi. Three or more people, or luggage, or a same-day return → private car. Those are genuinely different situations and they have genuinely different right answers.

How Long Does the Drive Really Take?

1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes for the 140–150 km run, almost all of it on the E11 / Sheikh Zayed Road. The fast figure is real mid-morning or late evening. The slow figure is rush hour, and it is also real.

If you have a flight, a meeting, or a check-in deadline at the far end, plan against the 2 hour 30 minute figure, not the 1 hour 20 one. The corridor between the two emirates is one of the busiest roads in the country and it does not care about your itinerary.

    The best times to travel

    • 10am – 2pm. The clearest window of the working day.
    • After 7pm. The evening rush has broken and the road opens up.
    • Avoid 7–9am heading toward Abu Dhabi — that is the commuter flow.
    • Avoid 5–7pm heading back to Dubai — same flow, reversed.
    • Friday afternoons are their own category of bad. Build in extra time.

This matters more than it sounds, because on a metered taxi, traffic is not just an inconvenience — it is a bill. The meter runs while you sit still. On a fixed-price private car it is purely an inconvenience, because the price was agreed before you set off.

Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi — the start of the 140 km run up the E11 to Dubai

When a Private Car Is Actually Worth It

Three situations, and only three. (1) You are three or more people. (2) You have real luggage. (3) You need the driver to wait and bring you back. If none of those describe you, a taxi is fine and the bus is better.

We would rather write that sentence and lose the booking than write a page that tells everybody a private car is the answer. It is not the answer for a solo backpacker, and pretending otherwise is how tour companies end up with one-star reviews.

    1. Three or more passengers

A taxi charges the same whether one person or four are inside — but a taxi is a sedan. Four adults plus four suitcases does not fit in a sedan, and you will end up taking two taxis, at which point you have paid AED 520–660 one way and split your group across two cars. Our vehicles seat 6–7 with genuine luggage space, at one price.

    2. You have luggage

This is where both the bus and the taxi quietly fail. The bus has limited luggage capacity. A sedan taxi has a boot that fits two large cases and then stops. If you are moving between emirates with a family’s worth of bags, the vehicle size is the entire decision, and the fare is a footnote.

    3. You need the driver to wait

This is the one that changes the maths completely, and almost nobody calculates it. Say you are going to Dubai for the day — the Burj, the Mall, lunch, back to Abu Dhabi by evening. With taxis you pay AED 260–330 out, and then at 8pm you are standing on a Dubai street trying to find a cab willing to take a 150 km cross-emirate fare, and paying AED 260–330 again. Total: AED 520–660, two strangers, no luggage storage, and a period of genuine anxiety about whether you will get home.

The alternative is one car, one driver, one fixed price. He waits at the mall. Your bags stay in the boot. You leave when you want. That is not a luxury product — it is straightforwardly cheaper and less stressful than the two-taxi version.

What is included in a private transfer

    • Private air-conditioned vehicle — yours alone
    • English-speaking driver
    • Fixed price agreed before you travel — no meter, no surge, no rush-hour surprise
    • Salik tolls, fuel and parking all included
    • Hotel door to hotel door — no stations, no walking with bags
    • Bottled water
    • No prepayment and no booking fee — you pay the driver

    Getting a Fixed Price

We do not publish an Abu Dhabi → Dubai price, and we want to be straight about why. Our published per-car rates (from AED 699) cover Abu Dhabi city tours and pickups. A Dubai or Sharjah leg depends on your pickup point, the vehicle, the timing, and whether the driver waits. A single headline number would overcharge some people and be one we could not honour for others — so we quote it properly instead.

Send this on WhatsApp to +971 58 228 2683 and you will get a fixed number back:

Five Real Scenarios, Five Different Right Answers

Abstract advice is useless at the point of decision. Here are the five situations people are actually in when they search this question, and what we would genuinely tell each of them.

Scenario 1 — Solo backpacker, one bag, one way

Take the E101 bus. AED 21. You will save around AED 280 and lose about eight minutes. There is no version of this where a private car is the right call, and we are not going to invent one. Spend the AED 280 on something in Dubai.

Scenario 2 — Couple, two suitcases, arriving at Abu Dhabi airport, hotel in Dubai Marina

Taxi or a private transfer — the bus is out. Two large cases plus a bus plus a change at the far end is a miserable evening. A metered taxi will run you AED 260–330 and drops you at the hotel door. A private car costs more but is fixed-price and the driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a board. If the flight lands late at night or you are nervous about arriving somewhere new, pay for the private car. Otherwise, the taxi is fine.

Scenario 3 — Family of five, two children, luggage, Abu Dhabi to Dubai

Private car, and it is not close. Five people and luggage do not fit in a sedan taxi, so the taxi option is really two taxis: AED 520–660, with your family split across two vehicles and your children in a car you have not vetted. A single 7-seater with one driver is cheaper, safer and less stressful. This is the scenario the product exists for.

Scenario 4 — Day trip to Dubai, back the same evening

Private car with the driver waiting. This is the case where the taxi maths quietly doubles and nobody notices until it is too late. Out: AED 260–330. Back: AED 260–330 again — assuming you can find a driver at 9pm willing to take a 150 km cross-emirate run, which is a real assumption and not always a safe one. Meanwhile your bags have been with you all day because there was nowhere to put them. One car that waits solves all of it for one price.

Scenario 5 — Business traveller, one person, needs to be there at 9am

Pre-booked private car, or a taxi if you are relaxed about it. Not the bus — not because of cost, but because a 9am arrival means travelling through the 7–9am rush and you need control over departure time, not a timetable. And on a meter, that rush hour is AED 50+ of extra fare for the privilege of sitting still. A fixed price removes that risk entirely.

Practical Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Can you pay a taxi by card?

Most licensed taxis in both emirates accept card, but not all of them, and not always reliably — machines fail, and a failed machine at the end of a 150 km ride is an awkward conversation. Carry enough cash to cover roughly AED 350 as a fallback. On a pre-booked private transfer this is a non-issue: you agree the price and the payment method in advance.

    Is the drive safe?

Yes. The E11 is a modern, well-lit, heavily policed motorway and the UAE has strict enforcement on speed and lane discipline. Night driving on this corridor is not a meaningful risk factor. The genuine risks on this route are fatigue and traffic, not danger.

    Child seats

Standard taxis do not carry child seats, and you cannot rely on one being available. If you are travelling with an infant or toddler, ask for a child seat when you book a private car — tell us in the WhatsApp message and it will be in the vehicle. This is a genuine, practical reason families choose a private transfer over flagging a cab, and it has nothing to do with luxury.

What about renting a car and driving yourself?

Perfectly viable if you are staying several days and want to explore — the roads are excellent and signage is in English. For a single one-way transfer it makes little sense, because you then have a rental car in the wrong emirate and either a one-way drop fee or a return leg you did not want. Salik toll gates are also charged to the rental company and billed back to you with an admin fee on top.

Do you get charged for the driver’s return journey?

With a metered taxi, no — you pay for your leg only, which is exactly why some drivers are reluctant to take the trip. With a private transfer the return leg is priced into the quote, which is part of why a private car is not AED 21. We would rather explain that honestly than pretend our costs do not exist.

The Four Mistakes People Make on This Route

    • Assuming Uber is cheaper. It is not, on this corridor. It is AED 300–450+ against AED 250–320 for a street taxi.
    • Budgeting one way when they need two. The single most expensive error. A same-day return by taxi is AED 520–660, not AED 300.
    • Travelling at rush hour on a meter. You are paying by the minute to sit still. Move your trip to 10am–2pm or after 7pm and you save both time and money.
    • Taking the bus with three suitcases. The bus is brilliant and it is AED 21 — but it is brilliant for people with one bag. Luggage is where it stops being the right answer.
The summary we would give a friend: one person, light bag → bus, AED 21. Two people, one way, with bags → taxi, AED 260–330. Three or more people, or real luggage, or a same-day return → private car, fixed price. That is the whole decision, and most pages on this topic will not tell you the first one.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your Abu Dhabi desert safari.

How much is a taxi from Abu Dhabi to Dubai? +

AED 250–320 on the meter, plus roughly AED 8 in Salik tolls — so about AED 260–330 in total for a one-way trip. The route is 140–150 km and takes 1 hr 20 min to 2 hr 30 min depending on traffic. Rush hour (roughly 7–9am towards Abu Dhabi, 5–7pm back to Dubai) can add AED 50 or more because the meter keeps running while you sit still. If you are picked up at Dubai International (DXB), standard taxis add an AED 25 airport pickup fee on top.

What is the cheapest way to get from Abu Dhabi to Dubai? +

The E101 bus, at AED 21. It runs from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station roughly every 30 minutes and takes about 1 hr 30 min — which is only around eight minutes slower than a taxi. That is the honest answer, and it means a taxi costs you roughly twelve times more to save eight minutes. The trade-offs are real: limited luggage space, no door-to-door service, and it drops you at a bus station rather than your hotel. But if you are one or two people with light bags, take the bus. We sell private cars and we are still telling you that.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi? +

No — it is usually more expensive. Uber and Careem typically run AED 300–450+ on this route, against AED 250–320 for a metered street taxi. This surprises people, because in many cities ride-hailing undercuts taxis. On the Dubai–Abu Dhabi corridor it does not, and surge pricing at peak times widens the gap further. What you are buying with Uber is cashless payment and app tracking, not a lower fare.

Do taxis wait for you in Dubai? +

No. A taxi drops you and drives away. This is the single most expensive thing about using taxis for a day trip, and almost nobody factors it in. If you travel Abu Dhabi → Dubai and back the same day, you are paying two fares (AED 500–660 total), and at the far end you are standing on a street in Dubai trying to find a cab that will accept a cross-emirate trip. A private car with a driver who waits is one price, one vehicle, and your luggage never leaves the boot.

How long does it take to drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai? +

Between 1 hour 20 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes for the 140–150 km run, almost entirely on the E11 / Sheikh Zayed Road. The fast end is realistic mid-morning or late evening; the slow end is rush hour, when the corridor genuinely crawls. The best windows are roughly 10am–2pm or after 7pm. If you have a flight or a meeting, plan for the slow figure, not the fast one.

Is there a fixed price for Abu Dhabi to Dubai taxi? +

Not with a metered taxi — the meter decides, and traffic decides the meter. That is precisely why the same trip costs one person AED 255 and another AED 330. A private car transfer works the opposite way: the price is agreed before you travel and it does not move, regardless of how bad the traffic gets. We quote our transfer prices on WhatsApp rather than publishing them, because the correct number depends on your pickup point, the vehicle and the timing — and we will not publish a price we cannot honour.

Is Salik included in the taxi fare? +

No — Salik tolls are added on top of the meter. Expect roughly AED 8 in toll gates on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai run, charged to you at the end of the trip. It is a small amount, but it is one of several add-ons (Salik, the AED 25 DXB airport pickup fee, rush-hour meter creep) that make the final figure higher than the number people quote each other. On our private transfers, Salik, fuel and parking are all included in the quoted price.

When is a private car actually worth it over a taxi? +

Three situations, and we would rather be straight about them than sell you something you do not need:

    1. Three or more passengers. A taxi charges the same whether one person or four are in it, but so do we — and our vehicles seat 6–7 with real luggage space, which a sedan taxi does not.
    2. You have luggage. Taxis and buses both struggle here. A private vehicle does not.
    3. You are coming back the same day. Two taxis cost AED 500–660 and neither one waits. One car that stays with you all day is a different product entirely.

If none of those three apply to you, take the taxi — or better, take the bus.

Can I get a taxi from Abu Dhabi airport to Dubai? +

Yes. Abu Dhabi International sits about 30 km from Abu Dhabi city centre but the run to Dubai is the longer leg, and fares from the airport rank at the higher end of the AED 250–330 band. If you are arriving on a flight with bags and a family, this is the scenario where a pre-booked private car with a fixed price makes the most sense — you walk out of arrivals to a driver holding your name, rather than joining a rank and watching a meter. If you are transiting rather than arriving, read our Abu Dhabi layover tour guide instead.

Do you publish your Abu Dhabi to Dubai price? +

No, and here is the honest reason. Our published per-car prices cover Abu Dhabi city tours and pickups. A Dubai or Sharjah leg depends on your exact pickup point, the vehicle you need, the time of day and whether the driver waits — and a single headline number would either overcharge some people or be one we could not honour for others. So we quote it on WhatsApp, before you commit, with no prepayment and no booking fee. Message +971 58 228 2683 with your pickup point, passenger count and date and you will have a fixed price back.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you run desert safaris and tours in Dubai as well as Abu Dhabi?

Yes. We are an Abu Dhabi based DCT-licensed operator running our own camp in the Al Khatim desert, and we also arrange Dubai desert safaris and Dubai city tours. If you are staying in Dubai but want the taller, quieter Abu Dhabi dunes and the lower price from AED 35, we run transfers from Dubai.

What is included in the Abu Dhabi desert safari?

Every evening package includes 4×4 dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, a sunset photo stop, Arabic costume for photos, henna for ladies, a full BBQ buffet dinner with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea, a shisha corner, separate washrooms and around eight live shows including tanoura, belly dance and a fire show.

How much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?

Booking direct with us: AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 shared bus from Al Wahda or Mazyad Mall, AED 100 shared hotel pickup, AED 599 for a private 7-seater car and AED 800 for a private Land Cruiser. Agencies and hotel desks typically charge AED 180 to 250 per person for the same evening because they add commission on top of an operator price.

What time does the desert safari start and finish?

Pickup is usually 3:00 to 3:30 PM and you are back in the city around 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Timings follow sunset, so in December pickup moves earlier and in June it moves later.

Where does the desert safari take place?

At our own DCT-licensed camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 80 km east of Abu Dhabi city along the E22 Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, about a 50 to 60 minute drive. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres, which is considerably taller than the roadside dunes some operators use, and there is far less traffic on the sand.

    How do I book?

Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the exact total, no deposit and no booking fee, and you pay at the camp on the day. Free cancellation applies up to 12 hours before.

    Is hotel pickup included?

Yes on the AED 100 shared pickup, the AED 699 private car and the AED 1,050 Land Cruiser, covering the whole city including the Corniche, Al Maryah, Al Reem, Downtown, Khalifa City, Mussafah, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Shabiya and the airport. The AED 50 package departs from Al Wahda Mall or Mazyad Mall, and AED 35 is self-drive using a GPS pin we send you.

    Do I need a 4×4 for the self-drive option?

No. You drive on tarmac to a meeting point, so any standard car or rental reaches it comfortably. Our team takes over there in a proper 4×4 for the dune bashing.

How long is the dune bashing?

Around 40 to 45 minutes with short breaks. Tyres are deflated to roughly 15 psi first so they float on the sand. Intensity is adjustable at any point — tell your driver you want it gentle and it becomes a scenic drive.

    Is dune bashing safe?

Yes with a licensed operator. Every passenger wears a seatbelt, vehicles are maintained and insured, drivers are trained specifically for dune driving, and vehicles travel in convoy so recovery is immediate. You can ask to stop at any time.

Can I do the safari without dune bashing?

Yes. Book the self-drive package and come straight to the camp, or ask for a direct transfer on a private car. You still get the sunset, camel ride, sandboarding, dinner and every show. This is the right choice for pregnant guests and anyone with back, neck or heart conditions.

What food is served at the camp?

A full BBQ buffet: salads and mezze including fattoush, hummus and Arabic bread; rice dishes, dal, pasta and mixed vegetable sabzi; chicken tikka, shish taouk, lamb seekh kebab and fish from the grill; Om Ali and fresh fruit for dessert. All 100% halal, with unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea.

Are vegetarian and special diets catered for?

Vegetarian options are always available as standard, and the whole buffet is halal. Vegan, Jain, gluten-free and allergy requirements can be accommodated with advance notice — tell us when you book and we will confirm what will be on the table.

    Is alcohol available?

No. Alcohol is not served or permitted at our camp and guests should not bring their own. Unlimited soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee and tea are included, and shisha is available at the camp.

    What should I wear?

Loose, light-coloured clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and closed shoes such as trainers you do not mind filling with sand. From October to April bring a jacket — camp temperatures drop to 13 to 22 degrees after sunset. Avoid flip-flops, heels and skinny jeans.

Is the desert safari better in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?

For dunes, quiet and price, Abu Dhabi. The Al Khatim ridges rise over 100 metres against generally lower Dubai dunes, there are far fewer vehicles on the sand, the night sky is darker and entry starts at AED 35 against roughly AED 90 to 150 in Dubai. Dubai is more convenient only if you are already staying there.

If we have to cancel, what happens?

A cancellation policy that covers your obligations but not ours is only half a document. Here is our side of it, in writing.

If we have to cancel your booking — for weather, a vehicle issue, or driver illness — we will contact you as soon as we know and rebook you at no charge on the next date that works for you. You pay nothing for the cancelled booking.

If we need to send a different vehicle than the one you booked, we will ask you first rather than turning up in something you did not book.

This is separate from your own cancellation rights, which are unchanged: you can cancel free up to 12 hours before pickup. Because we take no deposit and no booking fee, there is no money of yours sitting with us either way — nothing to chase, and nothing to wait for.
